Officially released in January 2009, the Phenom II is an update to the original Phenom line. The first AMD processors created on a 45nm fabrication process, the shrinking of transistors has allowed AMD to make significant changes to the chip. Besides implementing several tweaks to the original 65nm Agena core, the newer Deneb core includes an expanded L3 cache (2MB to 6MB). Besides this, the 45nm process also allows for lower power draw at higher clock speeds - meaning the newer Phenom processors can attain clockspeeds much higher than those of the original Phenoms, while using less electricity. Original Phenom II processors were supported on AM2+ motherboards and only support DDR2 RAM. The AM3 socket, and compatible AM3 Phenom II processors was released a month later in February.

Pros
- affordable prices compared to Intel's C2Q line
- high performance - like a C2Q for productivity, competes with i7 in games
- cheaper overall system cost (inexpensive motherboards and RAM compared to high end C2Q/i7 for similar performance)
Cons
- early Phenom IIs meant as interm release - only good for those who desire to keep their high performance mainboard, ram etc... upgrading from a higher-end dual core?
- no lower power model - designed for higher performance only
