November 21, 2008 at 12:26 pm

"I've had this bike for a year and find I use it even when I don't need the folding. The low handlebar position makes this a fast bike for its type.

The kids on my small town can't exactly figure out what kind of bike it is - they think it's a racing BMX.

It is big enough that you may need to put it in a bag to carry it on a passenger train. A bag can be purchased as an accessory.

A rear rack can be put on it with some extra work but the Swift is not really suitable as a utility bike. Like most small wheel bikes, it is also not suitable for bumpy off-road travel."

Not light but very solid construction.

It's easier than a folding bike to take on public transportation.

Don't ride this on wet pavement! You will wipe out."

2. commented on Strida Folding Bike 3.2 - October 22, 2008 at 11:22 am

"I've tried riding a Strida. It might be OK for short distances on smooth pavement at low speed. I think you'd use it as an ultra-portable bike to carry on public transortation.

My Xootr Swift is not heavy or expensive, and does not look awkward. It folds up small enough to carry onto a train as long if it's not crowded. The bikes that fold up really small are $1k or more.

BMX bikes are for doing tricks, or at least looking like you do, not serious transportation. You can't peddle one over 10 Km/hour and they'd kill your knees if you tried to ride very far."

3. commented on 2006 Trek Portland - October 22, 2008 at 10:51 am

"Kickstands: I'm with tlt on this. A bike without a kickstand is for long country rides, not for commuting and doing chores. Also: the fenders in the photo are way too small to keep down the spray."

4. commented on Trek Soho - October 22, 2008 at 10:32 am

"Can this bike be ordered with fenders or a rack? The product description of a commuting bike should say this.

For you Canadian consumers, the Norco VFR commuter line is similar and supposedly pretty good.

About recuments: I've owned two of them so I can tell you:
1) They're a blast to ride, and quite comfortable.
2) People do not think they look ridiculous. Kids especially dig 'em.
3) I'm an experienced bike commuter but I do feel nervous in heavy or fast traffic on mine. On residential roads you'd be fine. You do need a good mirror because it's harder to look over your shoulder."
