Apple iPod Touch 1st Gen

The Apple iPod Touch was announced in an event hosted by Steve Jobs on September 5th, 2007 along with the release of all the next generation iPods. The Touch borrows a lot of the technology found in the Apple iPhone and repurposes it as a standalone portable media player. The iPod Touch features the same multi-Touch interface and operating system as the iPhone. It also becomes the first WiFi enabled iPod with a built-in 802.11b/g wireless access allowing you to browse the Internet with the included Safari browser, and access the iTunes store directly from the iPod Touch.

Details

The Touch includes a flash drive coming in either a 8, 16 or 32 GB capacity. This means that you can store, in any combination, up to (1) 1750, 3500 or 7000 songs, (2) 10,000, 20,000 or 40,000 photos, or (3) 10, 20 or 40 hours of video. Any extra space can be used for data storage. Transfer data to the iPod touch using the included USB cable and an available USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC. You'll need to be running iTunes version 7.4 with at least Mac OS X v10.4.10 or Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. Alternatively, datahouse can be transferred to the Touch via the WiFi interface through the iTunes online store.

Features and specs

  • multi-Touch interface
  • 3.5" color touch screen display
  • 480 x 320 pixel resolution; 163 pixels / inch
  • WiFi 802.11b/g wireless access
  • capacity: 8 GB or 16 GB
  • battery life: audio - 22 hours, video - 5 hours
  • dimensions: 4.3" (H) x 2.4" (W) x 0.31" (D)
  • weight: 4.2 oz (120 g)
  • price: 8 GB - $299, 16 GB - $399, 32GB - $499.

For battery life, Apple claims 22 hours of audio and 5 hours of video playback. Expect it to take 3 hours to charge the batteries completely to a Full-charge, and 1.5 hours to do a Fast-charge to 80% capacity. Charging is done through USB or with a AC power adapter (sold separately). There is no word on the expected battery life for browsing the Web or using the built-in WiFi connection.

The iPod Touch was first released on September 7th, 2007 with 8 GB and 16 GB version retailing for $299 and $399 respectively. In February 2008 Apple released a 32GB model for $499. Coinciding with the Touch's initial September release the 8GB Apple iPhone saw a $200 price drop to $399 leading to minor backlash from the early adopters. Steve Jobs subsequently gave the first iPhone owners a $100 store credit for their troubles.

Maybe Apple should have chosen a more relevant artist for their default image. Macy Gray? Ok, fine, I see that her 2007 album, Big has been marked as her big comeback.

My friend got one of these, and it's pretty awesome. While there is no email app, you can still check it if you have it as an internet service, such as Gmail. Flash is supported, and one plugin is not, I can't remember what. The video great on the "large" screen, and the touch screen works really well.

Flash is supported? Hot damn, that IS pretty sweet. Then you can use services like DailyMotion or veoh to stream shows and movies. Not bad at all. I use GMail for my e-mail so I don't mind the absense of a dedicated e-mail app. I just hope the Touch gets hacked to pieces so that custom software can be installed. The iPhone had some seriously amazing apps written for it before Apple brought the hammer down.

If only more people opened up their wireless routers then you'd really have ubiquitous WiFi. As it stands now, in this suburban town of mine, WiFi coverage is pretty bad so it'd be relegated to in the house. Which isn't bad. But if I lived in Toronto with anywhere WiFi I'd get the touch in a heart beat. For now, my heart is palpatating, but I can hold off for a little bit longer...

Even if people opened their wifi their signal wouldn't be strong enough to have ubiquitous wifi...unless you are talking about a very densely populating city...although there would probably be more interference issues there.

I've had the 16gb version for about a month and I absolutely love it. I had a Creative Zen Vision W 30gb before which is very nice but big and bulky, truly a portable media player whereas the iPod Touch is smaller, slender, and weighs much less making it still more along the lines of an mp3 player with video. Hope that makes sense.

The newest firmware update from Apple makes it so you can add/edit the calendar. I sync mine with Outlook on Windows XP without a problem. I also have hacked it with jalbreak and have added the iPhone apps Mail, Maps and Weather. I also use Apollo for IM. I found a web app, Joopz, which allows me to send and receive text messages on the device...it's pretty neat.

My major gripe is that the Touch only works with iTunes and I hate iTunes. I use Media Monkey and while I sync my Touch with iTunes I still listen to my music with Media Money.

I also wish there was more public access to wireless networks. When I was in California it seemed wireless networks were more open. I live in Massachusetts and you have to pay for access in many places.

I can see why people love the iPhone. With the announcement of a 3g version coming out next year it makes me want one. I just wish someone besides AT&T offered it (that's a whole different story).

I love my Touch plain and simple. For me it is a worthy investment.

I mainly use my 16GB as a device to surf the Internet when I don't want to sit at my desk or drag out my laptop. It's such a pleasant experience to check my email (I've hacked my device), read rss feeds, and surf the web, that I can easily sit down for 1+ hours doing so.

I've tried reading ebooks on the device but I much prefer using a device that requires a hard button to turn pages instead of "flicking" to the next page on the Touch.

I occasionally watch movies and TV shows on it, play blackjack and solitaire on it. It's a great multi-purpose device.

All Apple multimedia players run far behind the competition now. I have owned several Ipods; the sound quality has always been abysmal, as has the reliability, and features. They elected to leave the chrome finish on the Ipod touch for one basic yet ingenious reason:so it scratches!

Apple has always manipulated customers by adding one capability to the Ipod line at a time. First we had Ipod color, then Ipod Picture, then Ipod Video; now they're leaning more toward full multimedia/hand held computer, as the competition has been pushing for at least a year. The batteries are not designed to last for more than roughly two years. They subconsciously tell the customer, "if you want to stay up to date, buy a new ipod every 2 years (or so);and don't worry about the competition, they don't make usable products, only we do."

Back to the chrome finish: it is designed to look pretty for a little while;but, the ingenious part of it is it will inevitably scratch, and make your ipod look outdated. This re-enforces the customer's notion they need to buy a new Ipod soon. It is malicious, yet very smart of Apple to do this to their customers.

Apple is behind the competition both in performance, capabilities, and quality. This product looks great;but, it's performance is LACKING. Apple is brainwashing people with their commercials that insult one's intelligence; and by adding feature by feature, one at a time, to get their customers to continuously buy newer Ipods. Isn't Apple supposed to be ultra modern? Does an ultra modern company based in California (of all places) really encourage all of the pollution associated with buying a new Ipod every year or so? Yes. They also got a "0" on a "Green" report.

The screens are defective. The capabilities are not many. All of this is nonsense. The only technology that Apple has really done well is the Multi-Touch function; which Microsoft had already introduced via their table top computer. Ipods once were truly innovative; and the only functioning mp3 player available, that time is long gone though. Bash me now, I'm just calling it as it is.

Apple make beautifully designed products, and the functional would be rather good too if it wasn't crippled by copy protection/DRM measures.
e.g.
- I can't copy MY music on my iPod between two computers, or on to my new computer !!!
- iTunes will happily delete my entire music collection off my iPod if it suspects I am attempting to use my iPod on a second computer !!!
- I can't delete files off the player directly, I must use iTunes.
- I can't encode MY music in the open source format(s) I would like, as if I want to use an Lossless format, Apple have declared that I must use their bastardisation of the Lossless format so that stupid DRM can be maintained.
-In short, Apple assumes that I am a criminal !!! and that it is their job to police me! Despite the fact that they are 'preaching to the converted' and that I have bought and paid over ?1000 in digital downloads for my music collection, they will still assume that I am stealing music when I try and copy it onto my new computer, and they will happily delete it from my iPod with little warning !!!
If I bought a car I wouldn't let the manufacturer dictate where I could drive it, so what right do Apple have to dictate what I can do with music I have bought and paid for??

Lets face it, iPods are OK for those who care more about aesthetics than functionality. That is, those with no appreciation of music formats or sound quality, who just want the latest thing like everyone else, and who don't mind spending 5 hours backing-up THEIR music to DVDs to move it to THEIR new computer, when with almost any other player, they could have dragged and dropped/ Copy and pasted in under 1/2 hr !

In short, iPods could have been the product of the decade, but have been so crippled by Apple that they are only really useful to teenage girls listening to boyzone!

I hear you, kdm.

Just reading your comment makes my blood boil. If you've paid for music (or other digital content) you should be able to transfer to any other medium as you see fit. What Apple has done a great job of, other than excellent product design is obfuscating the fact that they are a ruthless business like any other underneath their nano-chromatic exterior.

Comments

"All Apple multimedia players run far behind the competition now.

Bash me now, I'm just calling it as it is."
