The G2S-A1 from Asus is a desktop replacement laptop aimed at the enthusiast and gamer market with the components and price to match. With a 17.1" screen, weighing near 10 pounds, and a battery life that struggles to reach two hours this laptop isn't meant for portability. The 1920x1200 resolution display and powerful hardware make it capable of running most modern games with DirectX10 compatibility ensuring it won't be obsolete when the next generation of computer games are released in late 2007 and 2008. nVidia's 8600GT video card with HDMI out makes this laptop capable of delivering protected high definition content, though a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drive are available only as an option.

I have similar, 2-year-old model from Sager. I'm thinking of upgrading to this, but only if it fulfills these use cases better than my existing machine

  • It's comfortable to use in bed. Fan intakes should be on the sides rather than the bottom. It would be nice if the bottom were flat like a Macbook.
  • All functions (ACPI power, ACPI sleep, wi-fi) should work in ubuntu linux.
  • It should run quiet and cool when load is low, even while sitting on a blanket.
