The ASUS SBC-04D1S-U is a slim external Blu-ray Disc combo drive, capable of reading & writing/rewriting a variety of optical disc formats. Users can connect this drive to their PC via USB 2.0. This Blu-ray drive is not capable of writing to recordable Blu-ray Discs, but can read them at 4.8X speed. The ASUS SBC-04D1S-U is also capable of writing single or dual layer DVDs, with a max speed of 8X for DVD±R and DVD+RW, 6X for DVD-RW and 4X for DVD±R DL. CD-Rs can be written at 24X, while CD-RWs can be rewritten at 16X. This external drive can be mounted vertically or horizontally, and includes a stand to maximize the stability of the drive. The included Cyberlink software package allows users to manually adjust the brightness level of the external blue light, plus encrypt discs for added security. The ASUS SBC-04D1S-U is compatible with Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista. Pricing is not yet available.

Pros
- utilizes the latest USB 3 standard for enhanced bandwidth and thus faster burns
- backwards compatible with USB 2 for use with older (current) computers
- reads and writes to the latest high definition / high capacity optical media (Blu-ray)
- includes upconverting playback functionality (early burners did not)
Cons
- optical media is on the way out - can buy a full RAID drive enclosure for the same price
- high price - double that of a comparable internal drive
