Audioengine 2

Audioengine 2 (A2) are high-quality powered speakers designed to be hooked up to your media player or computer. They are marketed as the "little brother" to the popular Audioengine A5 speakers, retailing for $150 cheaper, coming in at around $200. The A2s are made from the same materials: 1) high-gloss Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) for the cabinet, 2) kevlar mid-range drivers, 3) silk dome tweeter. The main difference is that they are 1/3 the size of their bigger sibling with less power.

Details

The Audioengine A2 speakers deliver 15 Watts RMS per channel with a peak output rating of 30 Watts / channel delivered from its Dual Class AB monolithic amplifiers. This power is delivered by the 2.75" Kevlar mid/bass driver and a 20mm silk dome tweeter. For their small size, they still deliver decent bass with a frequency response of between 65Hz - 22kHz because of the acoustic properties of the wood cabinet.

Features:

  • Dual Class AB monolithic amplifiers
  • power: 15 W RMS / channel
  • frequency response: 65 Hz - 22 kHz
  • inputs: 1 x stereo RCA, 1 x stereo 1/8"
  • cabinet material: high-gloss MDF in white or black
  • mid-range driver: 2.75" kevlar cone
  • tweeter: 20 mm silk dome tweeter
  • size: 6”(H) x 4”(W) x 5.25”(D)
  • weight: left spk - 3.55 lbs, right spk - 3.15 lbs
  • price: $199 / pair

Comparison to the Audioengine A5:

  • 1/3 the size
  • Cheaper - $200 / pair vs. $350 / pair
  • Same MDF cabinet material
  • Same Kevlar, silk materials for speakers
  • Smaller driver - 2.75" vs. 5"
  • Less power - 15 W RMS vs. 50 W RMS
  • Less bass - 65 Hz vs. 50 Hz

The A2 speakers feature both RCA and 1/8" analog stereo inputs, making it easy to hook up any input source. Released after the A5 model in 2007, these speakers are now available in stores and online for $199.

I want these badly. While I like the A5s in theory, the price difference makes these more appealing. Couple a pair of these with your Apple iPod Touch and you're set.
