Belkin engineers have combined their expertise of 802.11n and wireless USB hubs and have made a 802.11n wireless USB hub. This sleek, black device allows you to plug up to 5 USB peripherals (iPod, digital camera, printer, etc.) to be accessed from anywhere on your wireless network. It is a Linux-based device, running software capable of advanced functionality like reading ink levels on a connected printer without extra drivers.

There are 5 USB 2.0 inputs: 2 in the front, and 3 in the back. The Belkin 802.11n Network USB Hub is expected to retail for $130. A Windows-compatible version will be available in June 2007, and Mac OS / X users will have to wait a little longer.

Product box claims "WIRELESS ACCESS" to peripherals, with reference that no wireless router is included. Another description on the box says "Compatible with all notebook computers equipped with WLAN or LAN".

Whilst it is clear that this product is not a wireless router with usb ports, and it works with notebooks equipped with WLAN, its description is misleading:

THIS PRODUCT DOES NEITHER PROVIDE NOR ENABLE WIRELESS ACCESS to peripherals, because it must be connected to by ETHERNET your network.

 

Therefore, if you happen to have a wireless router with no spare ethernet connection (ie. Apple Airport Express), this product requires additional hardware to make it work. Go back to the store!

 

(Product description on this Web site says this product is "a 802.11n wireless USB hub". IT IS NOT A WIRELESS USB HUB. It is a DHCP-enabled network USB hub.)
