The Panasonic DMP-BD65 is a Blu-ray player set for release in Spring 2010. This player is in the middle of the line in terms of features and functionality out of the upcoming Blu-ray players from Panasonic. As the foundation of the system, the player has full 1080p functionality as well as an up-converter that upgrades 480/720p quality closer to 1080p. In addition to Blu-ray input, the player is also capable of displaying movies with an online connection from such services as Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand without connecting to another system or computer. The DMP-BD65 comes wireless capable but the wireless adaptor must be purchased seperately; an e-net connection is also available. PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus technology is also featured with the player that creates clear, vibrant pictures as close as possible to the original film.

The Samsung BD-D6500 is a midrange Wi-Fi Blu-ray player with integrated Smart Hub content-searching software. This new technology (2011) has the capability to search through media-streaming services for specific content, as well as make recommendations. He player can also handle 3D Blu-ray discs, though it doesn’t offer 2D-to-3D conversion like its counterpart, the BD-D670. It can however upconvert standard content to full 1080p HD. Its signature feature is its ability to access Samsung Apps, which means it can stream Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Vandora, and much more. Plus it’s DLNA-compliant, which means it can also stream content from a PC. The Magnavox MBP110V/F7 is a Blu-ray disc and video cassette player that can play VHS tapes and Blu-ray, CD, and DVD discs. It offers full 1080p video output with purported 1080p upconverting, though some users claim the upconversion only works for DVDs, not VHS tapes. Mind you, Blu-rays play without difficulty and at 24 frames per second for cinema-like picture quality. The MBP110V/F7 Blu-ray player also supports JPEG images and SD memory card content. Plus there are a plethora of inputs—component, composite, HDMI—for accepting / transmitting to a variety of sources. Note however that the MBP110V/F7 player only plays tapes; it doesn’t offer any recording services whatsoever, even for VHS.

The Philips BDP5506 is a 3D Blu-ray DVD player and part of five models announced at the January 2011 CES convention in Las Vegas for a first quarter release. This and the BDP7506 are at the top of the line sharing a touch control front panel, although all have a slim design. Images are processed at full 1080p at 24 frames per second and older DVDs will be upscaled to that resolution as well. AVCHD playback allows playback of a variety of formats and is found on all models. They are also capable of streaming when connected to any TV from sites such as NetFlix, Blockbuster, FilmFresh, VUDU and NetTV with access to over 4500 HD channels, and, vTuner for internet radio. Philips MediaConnect lets you connect wirelessly to your computer to view everything on the big screen as well.

The BD-C6800 is a mid-level Blu-ray Disc player from Samsung, released in July 2010. This 3D player is capable of Full 1080p video output, BD-Live 2.0 functionality and internet streaming over its built-in Wi-Fi.

The BD-C6800 features support for 3D movies and television through its use of 3D active glasses (sold separately). According to Samsung, this player also coverts 2D movies, sports and TV shows to 3D as well. The Philips BDP7600 is a Blu-ray player designed for high-definition 3D content playback. CinemaPerfect HD enables a clear 1080p picture in 24 frame mode, and will play 3D content on compatible displays. Philips Net TV is built in enabling access to a variety of online content, and is accessed through either an Ethernet wired connection or the built-in WiFi. A keyboard can also be connected through the USB port to make it easier to type in addresses or fill out search fields. The Samsung BD-D7500 is an ultra-slim, wall-mountable Wi-Fi Blu-ray player released in early 2011 along three other weaker models, including the BD-D7000. It’s just like the former model in regard to functionality, but it hosts a 1.1” deep frame for maximum space-saving. Like its counterpart, the device offers 3D Blu-ray playback in addition to standard 1080p video playback, DVD upscaling, and 2D-to-3D upconversion. It also offers a plethora of networking functions, including built-in WiFi, DLNA streaming, and support for Samsung Apps. There’s also Smart Hub, a newly released (2011) technology that allows users to easily search through streaming-media sources. The final feature is also new. Called 1-Foot Connection, it allows a user to place the device within 1-foot of a router for an auto WiFi connection.

The Sony BDP-S780 is a mid-cost Blu-Ray player. This Blu-Ray player's IP Content Noise Reduction helps to ensure an undistorted viewing experience. The BDP-S780 has WiFi 802.11n built in, with a WiFi Protected Setup. The BRAVIA Internet Video platform allows you access to sites like Netflix, Pandora, HuluPlus and Amazon Video on Demand. This Blu-Ray player's BD-LIVE functionality allows you to access extra Blu-Ray disc features like online chats and extra scenes. This Blu-Ray player has a front USB port that allows you to view photos and play music and video from external devices. The BDP-S780's Media Remote feature allows you to use your iPhone or iPod touch as the remote control. This model differs from the lower cost BDP-S580 model in that it has Skype embedded (though it requires a USB TV camera), Super Bit Mapping processing technologies (which deliver smoother color gradation when connected via HDMI), and Precision Cinema HD Upscaling technology (so that even regular DVDs with come out in 1080p HD). The Samsung BD-D6700 is a midrange Wi-Fi Blu-ray player released in early 2011 alongside the weaker BD-D6500. It offers 3D Blu-ray playback like its peer, but it adds along 2D-to-3D upconversion. Plus it offers twin HDMI v1.4 outputs that can deliver both 3D and 7.1-channel surround sound through legacy A/V receivers. Like its counterpart, the Samsung BD-D6700 centers around Samsung Apps and Smart Hub technology. The former allows it to stream Internet content (YouTube, Vudu, etc.), while the latter lets a user search through these streaming sources for specific content. Additional features include AllShare DLNA for PC streaming, 1-foot connection for auto router connectivity, and 1080p upscaling.

The Oppo BDP-83 is a high end Blu-ray player and one of the few that are SACD/DVD-A capable. Very few devices with these capabilities are available, and the ones that are are in another price range altogether. The BDP-83 features an ethernet port for BD-Live (Profile 2.0) support, and also includes 7.1 channel analog audio outputs. The device will include the award winning ABT 2010 chip, allowing for top quality de-interlacing and scaling for both Blu-Ray and DVD media, and will support Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital TrueHD, DTS High Resolution, and DTS HD-Master high-definition audio formats. A beta program was started in March, shipping units to interested parties at $499, before the product was launched in early July with an MSRP of $599.99.

The Samsung BD-P4600 is a high-end, ultracompact (1.5”) wall-mountable Blu-ray Disc player that was announced at CES 2009. This player is very similar feature-wise to Samsung’s BD-P3600. The BD-P4600 features Profile 2.0/BD Live/Bonus View compatibility, Netflix movie and Pandora music internet streaming, plus 1GB of onboard memory, which is required for online features. This compact player also includes a USB 802.11n Wi-Fi dongle, which is intended to compliment the integrated Ethernet port. The BD-P4600 also supports the highest resolution audio formats out of the box, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other notable features include a slot-loading disc drive, improved loading times, a 1-second eject feature and touch sensitive controls on the unit itself. The Sony BDP-S370 is a Blu-Ray Player set for a Summer release in 2010. The player is intended to expand upon the most basic functionality found in Blu-Ray players and offer more than just full High Definition resolutions by reading Blu-Ray discs. The system can upscale lower resolutions to improve image quality during streaming video or while playing standard DVDs. The Toshiba BDX4200 is a mid-range Blu-ray player similar to the Toshiba BDX2200. The primary difference between the BDX4200 and BDX2200 is that the BDX4200 can handle 3D media. The Sony BDP-S350 is one of two new Blu-ray players (along with the Sony BDP-S550) announced for release later in 2008 from Sony. Technically it is a Profile 1.1 player because of its support for BonusView, but does not meet the Profile 2.0 designation found in the Sony BDP-550 because of its lack of at least 256 MB of local storage. However, it will support BD-Live with a firmware update via the Ethernet port, supporting interaction with Web-content. The BDP-S350 will retail for $400 when it becomes available in Summer 2008.

The Pioneer BDP-430 is a Blu-ray player that includes a number of Internet functions as well as basic disc playback. The player is fully compatible with 3D Blu-ray content, and can send it to a display at full 1080p high definition quality. The BDP3506 is a Blu-ray DVD player announced by Philips at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for release in February of 2011. It is accompanied by four other models, all of which share 3D playback capability and have multiple streaming options like NetTV, FilmFresh, Netflix and Blockbuster. With Philips MediaConnect you can wirelessly connect to your PC and have the contents of the computer on your TV screen, allowing you to stream movies and surf the net on the big screen. When connected without a computer the vTuner can be used for internet radio streaming, and, NetTV provides direct access to over 4500 HD channels and also supports VUDU for viewing videos and pictures from social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. 1080p picture quality is supported at 24 frames per second, and it will upconvert non 1080p DVD's automatically. Two other models revealed at the show include the top of the line BDP5506 and BDP7506, both of which feature touch screen controls. Philips have not added these to their website at this time so specifications are still limited.

The Sharp BD-HP80U is one of two 3D network Blu-ray disc players (BD-HP80U, BD-HP90U) released in September 2010. Both units are Sharp’s first-ever 3D BD players. In particular, the BD-HP80U is the weaker of the two, though it does still offers a plethora of streaming options including DivX, AVCHD, Netflex, Pandora, and VUDU from a Blu-ray disc, a CD/DVD, or the Internet. The BD-C7900 is Fully HD compliant at 1080p resolution, and is compatible with 3D content on Blu-ray discs. The BD-HP70U is one of the Blu-ray players new from Sharp in 2010. This is a high-end model, but like the other Blu-ray players coming out from Sharp, the BD-HP70U is made primarily to be compatible with the Sharp AQUOS LCD HD TV. One unique feature here is the reinforced anti-vibration design with center loading tray. This design will help to cut back on skipping. There is also a custom install feature that includes Deep Color a feature that will enhance picture quality. Like its counterpart, the Sharp BD-HP24U, the BD-HP70U uses only 14 watts of power while in use, and 0.4 watts in standby mode, which makes it Energy Star compliant. The Samsung BD-C6500 is the moderately-priced model in the line of Blu-ray players announced by Samsung at CES 2010. Unlike the other models, the C6500 has an amazingly fast fifteen-second bootup and a fifteen-second disc load time. It is able to connect to the internet and make use of the built in Samsung Internet@TV service with Samsung applications. The applications include: Netflix, Blockbuster, Picassa, Pandora, VUDU, Twitter among others. The Wi-Fi is built-in. It is the middle model, meaning it is more expensive and has more features than the BD-C5500, but is less expensive and has less features than the BD-6900.

The Samsung BD-P3600 is a high-end Blu-ray Disc player announced at CES 2009. The BD-P3600 is reasonably similar to Fall 2008’s Samsung BD-P2550, featuring Profile 2.0/BD Live/Bonus View compatibility, Netflix movie and Pandora music internet streaming, plus 1GB of onboard memory, required for online features. The Vizio VBR120 is a mid-cost Blu-ray player. This player is equipped with an Ethernet port, and has Vizio Internet Apps. You can connect to the Internet and stream movies and TV shows, get news from the Associated Press or New York Times websites, and connect to Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. The VBR120 delivers full 1080p high-definition video. This Blu-ray player can also play 7.1 surround sound via HDMI. The VBR120 plays Blu-ray and DVD discs, audio CDs, MP3s and JPEG files. You can browse through Picasa web albums from your TV with this player. The Pandora widget of the VBR120 allows you to take in internet radio. The Vizio VBR120 Blu-ray player comes with a remote control.
