Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition

The Electronic Banking Edition of Monopoly forgoes the original green, orange, pink and yellow money in favor of the more modern plastic debit card. Each player has their own debit card, and the banker now has an electronic swiper to credit and debit your card. The jury is still out on whether this makes it easier or harder for the banker to cheat. Other updates include: modernized tokens, newer, more relevant landmarks, and higher property values so the sums are more in the millions (versus thousands) range. For example, Boardwalk for $400 is replaced with Times Square selling for a cool $20 million.

Game Includes:

6 tokens: flat screen TV, dog in a handbag, Segway personal transporter, Altoids tin, space shuttle and baseball cap

Title deed cards with higher property values

Chest and Community cards

6 debit cards

1 card swiper

32 houses

12 hotels

Monopoly Board Game

Since 1935, this game has been played by more than 500 million people worldwide. Buy property, charge rent, go to jail, it's all in a day's work. Just remember to keep an eye on the banker, they might be slipping some bills under the table.

This might not be favorable to the Monopoly purists, but a 2007 version is now available that forgoes paper money completely in exchange for plastic - the Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition.

Pictionary

Pictionary is a classic visual word-based game first released in 1985 by Seattle Games Inc. and currently owned by Hasbro and Parker Brothers. Designed for multiple teams of 2 players ages 12 and up, the game is based around the concept of sketching objects, actions and creatures of varying difficulties for an unknowing teammate to correctly guess. Game spaces are color-coded and can be related to one of six different categories including "Person/Place/Animal", "Object", "Action", "Difficult", "All Play" and a purple wild card-style space. Once the six-sided die is rolled and a category is decided upon, players have one minute (governed by a sand timer) to designate a sketch-person, and have the other teammate provide a successful guess as to what was drawn. Drawing and guessing duties alternate with each turn, and dice rolls are not taken until a task is completed successfully. The All Play category can interrupt the existing order of turns in a game in that all teams are included, with the winning team taking the next turn regardless of which team was the last to go. The wild-card space allows a team to choose which category they would like to work within, as each separate game card includes a task specific to all five of the other categories. The game is won when a team is able to traverse the entire board and be the first ones to each the home space, which is usually but not always the team with the most correct guesses.

Scrabble has been (arguably) America's favorite word game for the last 50 years. It's a game in which 2-4 players take turns placing letters on a 15x15 game board. The goal is to form horizontal and vertical words that are connected to other already played word. Each letter has an associated score value that determines the value of each played word. There are special cells on the board that double and triple both letter and word values. Play continues until all of each players pieces have been played and/or they cannot play anymore.

The highest score for any single play was 392 with the word "CAZIQUES" by Karl Khoshnaw. Before you play, learn the accepted two letter words like ox, qi, xu, and za.

English letter values:

2 blank tiles (scoring 0 points)

1 point: E ×12, A ×9, I ×9, O ×8, N ×6, R ×6, T ×6, L ×4, S ×4, U ×4

2 points: D ×4, G ×3

The purpose of the game is for the players to advance along a path as much as possible. They do this by drawing cards, and in order to advance again they must draw a card or greater or equal value. It features 60 minutes of play, and the researcher piece. Each game of Lost Cities can last anywhere from 45-60 minutes, letting players pass large amounts of time with just one game. On top of the normal pieces they receive, each player gets a larger piece called the researcher. The researcher can earn twice as many points as a normal piece, making him a crucial component in winning the game. When compared to a similar game, Dominion, Lost Cities has a fewer amount of cards, and a shorter set-up time, giving it a slight advantage.

It is an updating of the original Scene It?, with more clips, more recent clips, and the new Party Play feature. Like other Scene It? games, the goal is to move around the board as you answer questions correctly until you hit the bull's-eye center of the game board. When it is your turn, the 8-sided die determines whether you answer a trivia question, try to identify a DVD clip, or pick up a Buzz card (which can move you forward or push you back). This Deluxe edition comes in a tin package, and has two DVDs instead of the usual one. The clips on the DVDs are randomized, so that you will never get the same game twice. The game equipment consists of a single module that is passed around. The module gives you a catch phrase such as "Backseat driver" or "Pay through the nose", which you then have to get your teammates to say. Once your teammate guesses the phrase correctly, you pass the module over to the next team. As phrases are guessed correctly, the module keeps getting passed back and forth. If your team is holding the module when the timer has run out and the buzzer goes off, the other team gets a point. The team with the most points wins the game. As there are over a thousand catch phrases programmed into the module, you will be able to play many games before getting repeats. While maintaining the same primary objective and trivia style as the previous editions of the game, Bet You Know It Edition includes a betting-style feature that allows players to place wagers on the likelihood that one of their opponents will get a question right or wrong. Correct guesses provide poker-style value chips that can be exchanged for wedges - the category and color-specific pieces that allow a player to win the game. Another aspect that separates this edition from previous incarnations of the game is the addition of the "Mixologist" envelope, which includes four rotating topic cards instead of the standard single card. The cards in this envelope may or may not include questions relative to the category that is expected, and provides a further twist to other players betting on a given turn. Bet You Know It Edition includes 300 cards with 1600 never-before-used questions, with certain cards featuring multiple choice and image-related questions.

Cranium Wow

Cranium Wow is a party-style board game from Hasbro and Cranium Inc. that offers an updated take on the original release of the game, as well as an alternative to such spin-off editions of the game as Cranium Turbo Edition and Cranium The Family Fun Game. Intended for up to four groups of two players each, the objective of the game is for each team to move their game piece along the board using a 10-sided die that is color-coded to correspond to a given character card up to four spaces away. Everyone begins on a "Planet Cranium" space, and must draw a character card from one of the four different boxes organized by activity. The card categories include "Data Head" general knowledge questions, "Star Performer" music and charade-style questions, "Creative Cat" drawing and sculpting questions, and "Word Worm" spelling and grammar questions. Unlike most board games, players do not roll until the end of their turn, and may only roll if their character card challenge was successfully completed. While many of the challenges are tailored to the two players on a given team, there are a number of "Club Cranium" cards that include all members of the game. The team that wins a Club Cranium challenge gains control of the die whether it was supposed to be their turn or not, potentially intercepting the proper order of turns. The game is won when a given team traverses the entire board and becomes the first to enter into "Cranium Central" in middle of the board. It should be noted that there are two separate tracks that players can travel upon - the "Scenic Path" and the "Fast Track". Each time a team gets their game piece to a Planet Cranium space, they are eligible to access the fewer-spaced Fast Track by successfully completing their first challenge. Doing so allows them to use the Fast Track until reaching the next Planet Cranium space, where they must transfer to the Scenic Path if they do not once again complete the challenge.

Charge Large is a credit-based board game from Hasbro that operates in a style similar to other economically-driven games like Monopoly and the Game of Life. Suitable for up to four players, the game starts with all players receiving an entry-level credit card with a relatively low limit. They can then use this card to purchase franchises and properties in hopes of maximizing their income without jeopardizing their credit rating. Maintaining a low credit balance and a steadily increasing income allows players to apply for higher-valued cards, with variables such as lottery and gambling aspects coming up along the way. The objective of the game is to be the first player with zero credit and a sufficient amount of income to obtain the limit-free "Black Credit Card", symbolizing a well-managed and trustworthy credit history. Charge Large was developed after the initial impact of the late 2000-era economic depression, in hopes teaching the younger generation about the importance of good credit.

A lot of people think of themselves as a trivia whiz, or at least better at trivia than the rest of their friends. Fortunately, you can put yourself to the test with this Shocking Quiz. It essentially puts your nerves where your mouth is.

The game is designed for 4 people. Each person holds a controller with 1 person as the quiz master (the blue controller). The quiz master asks a multiple choice question and each contestant is given 7 seconds to answer A, B, C or D. You have to lock your question in with the controller so there's no going back on your decision. After 7 seconds are up, if you got the question wrong, you'll definitely know it. Your controller sends some 'pleasant' electric shocks up your arm, making sure you know just how wrong you are. Comes with 600 questions, dice, scoreboard and pen. NOT for people under 14.

One player draws a secret word card and choses a noun. The timer starts, and the player must put descriptive titles onto the easel for the rest of the players to see. If they guess the noun, the titles are cleared and the next word is used. When the timer is done the next player gets to draw a new noun card. The player with the most points wins. This game challenges vocabulary skills, as well as visual acuity when searching through the descriptive tiles. Players yelling out guesses is an integral part of the game, so a certain level of noise is to be expected.

Designed for a 30 to 60-minute session, Balderdash has players take turns being a ‘Dasher’ who reads out an unheard of word. Everyone then writes down a potential definition that the dasher reads out-loud—including the real one. Players then vote on which one is correct. Points are earned for writing the correct definition, for voting on the correct definition, and for acquiring the winning vote by bluffing. If the dasher accidentally or purposefully reveals that a player’s definition is fake prior to completion of the voting process, that player is said to have been “discombalderated.” Or if you elect your own fake definition in an attempt to inject credibility, that’s called a “downstream balder.” Critics say that though it “sounds boring, it’s not!”

Stratego is a classic strategy-style board game from Milton Bradley and Hasbro that is designed for two players and utilizes chess-like strategics. Commonly played on a 10x10-space board, the game includes two opposing sides (commonly red and blue) each with an identical army (commonly 20 pieces each) comprising officers and soldiers of different ranks as well as multiple bombs and a single flag. While remaining unaware of how the opposing player has arranged his or her army, the objective of the game is to be the first to seize the enemy's flag. Any movable piece can perform this task, but mobile characters are at the mercy of enemy characters that have superior ranks. Because the game is played blindly, a level of risk is involved with each move. When a challenge is made, the piece with the lowest rank is removed. If two pieces of identical rank meet in challenge, they are both removed. With the exception of the Scout (who can travel as far as possible in a straight line across any available spaces), all pieces may only move one space vertically or horizontally per turn. However, this rule does not apply to bomb or flag pieces, which must remain on their initial space for the entirety of the game. All mobile pieces are susceptible to bombs with the exception of the Miner character, who can "diffuse" the bomb and remove it from the board. The Scout character (which is the most numerous piece in the army) is relatively un-powerful on its own, but is the only movable piece in the game that can trump the most powerful character - a Marshall. There are many disputable strategies that exist among serious Stratego players, including certain bomb and flag placements, deceptive gameplay and general logistics behind moves. There have been multiple world championship competitions involving the game, with online tournaments becoming prominent in the late 2000's. Many classic and special edition versions of the game are currently available in both physical and digital formats, varying in price, artwork and layout and occasionally featuring smaller armies and board sizes.

Bananagrams comes with 144 letter tiles, a set of rules and a banana pouch to keep them in. Similar to Scrabble but quicker and easier to play. Bananagrams requires no paper, pencil or board. This game is great for spelling and vocabulary. It also encourages children to use a dictionary.

Rules of Play

At the beginning of the game all the letter tiles are placed upside down on a table where each player proceeds to take a number of tiles for their own use. After all the players have the proper number of tiles the game begins where each player creates words in a crossword manner in the central area of the board, similar to Scrabble. Unlike Scrabble there is no set order, players can place words at any time, the player that ultimately uses up all of his/her tiles first wins.

Blokus is an abstract strategy board game in which 2-4 players take turns strategically placing colored, Tetris-like pieces on to the grid of the game board. Pieces are not allowed to lie adjacent to any of your own pieces, but rather must be placed so that they touch at least one corner of your already played pieces. The player with the fewest remaining pieces after no player is able to play any further is the winner. Receive bonus points for using all of your pieces, however this is a very difficult task.

Blokus, which has won numerous awards, was invented by a French-Canadian artist and engineer after being inspired by a painting. The proper pronounciation has been debated, but the official response is that it's pronounced "Block-kus" and not "Blow-kus". Goto blokus.com and play online against the computer and compete for the title of world's best.

Released in 1998 as an expansion to The Settlers of Catan, Cities and Knights lasts approximately 90 minutes and adds additional elements of tactical complexity, such as the ability to create knights to protect land from invading barbarians, and city improvements that award benefits upon the city’s owner. In particular, Cities and Knights replaced Development Cards with Progress Cards, and Building Cost Cards with a City Upgrade Calendar. Plus the “Largest Army” card doesn’t permit the earning of victory points as easily anymore. And due to these improvements, the game is played to 13 points, instead of 10.

Featuring a grid (usually 4x4) of randomized lettered dice, the objective of the game is to derive as many words as possible from adjacent letters in a set time frame (usually 3 minutes). Suitable letters can be beside, above, beneath or diagonally spaced from a starting letter. Point values from 1 to 11 are available depending on how many letters are used in a given word, and the validity of words can be confirmed via the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary. Multiples of common consonants and vowels are included, with each die face featuring a single character except for the "Qu" block. Boggle is most similarly related to Scrabble, and is affiliated with the National Scrabble Association, and features international tournament play as well as multiple clubs based out of colleges in the United States. While there have been many different versions of the game released including 4x4 and 5x5 grids, junior and travel-sized editions, software and internet-based games and more, the most current release of Boggle utilizes a smaller self-contained design that prevents the loss of dice. This edition, sometimes referred to as Boggle Reinvention, also features a color-changing timer and claims to be much quieter than earlier versions.

The Protégé line uses Sidepot Gaming Company’s throwback Cigar & Snifter mold. The engraved design features an intricate cigar and snifter design, repeated 8 times around the track of the chip. Two concentric circles frame this repeating design, one inside and one outside.

The innovation that really sets the Protégé line apart from other high-end clay poker chips is the innovative smooth feel of the track and edge of the chip combined with the popular textured, cross-hatched inlay surface

Each player begins with 12 Egyptian-themed pieces and each player has a laser built into the side of the board. Move your piece and then fire your lazer. The goal is to arrange your pieces so that the laser's beam bounces off their mirrored sides in a path to your opponent's Pharaoh, BUT if you are hit on the side with out the mirror your piece must be removed from the board so be careful.

The object of the game is to identify "sets" of 3 cards. Each card has unique features: number (1, 2, or 3); symbol (diamond, squiggle, or oval); shading (solid, striped, or open); and color (red, green or purple). A "set" consists of 3 cards on which each feature (taken separately) is either the same on all of the cards, or different on all of the cards. Each round features a reader who reads aloud a Topic Card, such as “Things… you can never find.” All other players then write an answer, and then the reader reads them aloud twice. The player immediately to the reader’s left must then guess. Every correct answer means the person matched is eliminated, while the guesser gets to continue guessing. When she gets a guess wrong, the person to the left of her resumes the guessing. This continues until only one player remains. As for scoring, 1 point for each correct guess, and 6 points for the remaining player. The game continues until everyone has been a reader. Though some questions are a bit objectionable (“Things you shouldn't do when you're naked"), critics say the game is overall fairly friendly to everybody.

It features 84 cards and 14 rounds, and is designed to last no more than 30 minutes. Each round pits a storyteller against all other players. The cards then go back to the storyteller, and she must shuffle them, after which players bet on which card was the storyteller’s. If either everyone or nobody at all chooses the correct card, all players score 2 EXCEPT the storyteller. If on the other hand someone chooses correct, that player and the storyteller receive 3 points. Released in 1997 as an expansion to The Settlers of Catan, Seafarers lasts approximately 90 minutes and adds a bevy of new components. Some of these include ships to function as roads over water, gold river terrain that grants next-door players extra resources, and a variety of water-heavy-heavy variant setups (or scenarios). Like its original counterpart, Seafarers centers around users competing to become the most powerful force by building settlements, cities and roads.

Parker Brothers promotes this game as a fast-paced game of charades. The players form teams, and then one player for each team puts four cards into the Action Timer and makes wordless gestures to get their teammates to guess the word on each card before the Action Timer "munches" them. When a card is guessed correctly, your team gets a point and you quickly take the card out of the Action Timer (so it is not "munched", which renders it invalid), and move on to the next card. When the game is over, you add up the points and the team with the highest amount of points wins the trophy. This game is recommended for players ages eight and up.

Each turn in this game consists of two actions. First, you pick up a challenge card that describes an action you must perform. These actions could be acting out a role, telling a story, or explaining an opinion. This part has no direct bearing on the outcome of the game. The second part of your turn is picking up a curse card, which consists of an action that you must force another player to continually perform, such as barking like a dog. If another player notices that you have stopped performing the action you were cursed with, you have broken the curse and must flip the curse card over. Once you have broken three curses, you are eliminated from the game. The last player left wins the game. In 2002, Curses won the Mensa Select National Competition.

Based on the classic TV Game Show from the 60’s and 70’s, Password is designed to last 30 minutes and it pits two teams against one another. The first team to correctly guess the password scores for that round. However, each incorrect guess lowers the potential value of the score. They key though is that the clues can only be one word (non hyphenated), which is in fact what makes it so difficult. There have since 1962 been a total of seven editions produced by Endless Games. Each additions adds on another 1000 or so new words.

The purpose of the game is to gather the most valuable deck of cards. It features over 250 cards, and supports up to four players. The 250 cards of the game allow for a long duration of 30 minutes or more, and allow each player to compose new strategies with each hand. The game can be played with anywhere from two to four players, which makes players be more strategic, as they can never know what each opponent is planning. When compared to a similar game, Lost Cities, Dominion has more cards and a longer set-up time, but both games roughly last for the same amount of time.

This updated version of the game features a number of fun sound effects instead of the loud buzzing of the original. Players must attempt to extract small plastic pieces from the patient's body with a pair of tweezers. If they touch the sides, a sound effect plays and the next player gets a turn. If they succeed, they press the nose and are directed to the next part to be extracted. This game takes 4 "AAA" Batteries, not included. A clipboard is attached to store the tweezers and a storage tray is set aside to keep the individual parts together. Two skill levels allow for more difficulty when players feel they have mastered the game, requiring an even more steady hand.

There are a total of 108 tiles with six shapes and six colors. Players earn a single point for placing a tile, but they earn even more points by building lines that share a common attribute, such as color or shape. A complete series of 6 tiles (called a Qwirkle) nets them an extra 6 points. Throughout the game, each player holds 6 tiles, and whenever they play a tile, they must draw a new one to maintain the 6. The game ends when either there are no more tiles or someone runs out of tiles.

Lowe, eventually sold to Milton Bradley and currently owned by the Hasbro company. It can be played alone, or with two or more players. The primary object of the game is to simultaneously roll five dice and achieve the highest possible score. Typically there are 13 rounds per game, with each player having a maximum of three rolls to achieve the highest possible score. While certain outcomes such as Three-Of-A-Kind, Four-Of-A-Kind and Chance provide the player with a score that is only equal to the sum of the displayed dice values, there are a number of specialty rolls that provide fixed higher-scoring point values. These include a Full House (a Three-Of-A-Kind and a pair) at 25 points, a Small Straight (four sequential dice) at 30 points, a Large Straight (five sequential dice) at 40 points and a Yahztee (five of a kind) at 50 points for the first time. If a player rolls more than one Yahtzee in a single game, they are given a bonus chip that is worth an additional 100 points. Scoring combination rules are determined by the players before the start of a game, and are commonly altered before the start of each subsequent game. The game is available in many physical and digital formats including handheld and travel-sized versions, vintage and deluxe versions, commercially-themed versions including Toy Story, National Parks and Super Mario editions, card-deck versions, video games on all major consoles, Apple iOS and more.

Players need to get teammates to guess the word on the top of a card without using any of the taboo words listed. If successful, the team wins a point. If a taboo word is used, the player gets buzzed and the other team gets a point. A timer determines when it's time to give up and let the other team have a try. Over 1,000 words are available to guess. This game requires a good mastery of vocabulary, and younger players may struggle with it. To work, at least 4 players are required. The buzzer requires 2 "AA" batteries, not included, but isn't crucial to gameplay.

Gameplay lets players walk through a lifespan starting with choosing education, career, and eventually making family choices. As the game progresses players will accumulate Life Tiles by doing good deeds, and manage their money to buy a house, stock, insurance, and manage debt. The player that retires with the biggest fortune wins. Gameplay involves spinning a large central wheel and moving a small vehicle around the board's twists and turns, placing pegs to represent family members into the car along the way.
