The BodyBugg is a simple device that you wear on your person at all times that monitors the amount of calorie burning you do throughout the day. By measuring your overall movements and intensity levels, bodybugg claims to register over 92% of all your calories used. This means that the walks around the office, to and from the bus stop and everything in between gets counted towards your calorie output. Originally released in 2005, the Bodybugg v3 was released in 2008 with a much smaller and sleeker armband.

Details

The idea behind the Bodybugg is simple: in order to lose weight, you need to take in less calories than you put out. By keeping a constant measurement on the amount of calories you're expending, you can know how many calories you can take in.

The Bodybugg uses 4 main features to keep track of your activities (it's much more than just a pedometer).

  1. Accelerometer - a two-axis micro-electro-mechanical sensor that measures motion
  2. Heat flux - a sensor measures how much heat the person's body is giving off
  3. Galvanic Skin Response - measures electrical current across the skin, essentially this aspect is measuring how much you sweat
  4. Skin temperature - tracking a person's core body temperature gives the Bodybugg an indication of how much physical exertion the person is doing

The Bodybugg aims to be a complete fitness program by including a web-based aspect to the product. This part includes the downloading of your daily caloric outputs from the device as well as the wearer inputting the foods they ate throughout the day. They have an extensive database of foods available so you don't need to know the calories of each thing eaten, simply inputting the name will get translated into calories. The program then gives you a daily calorie deficit or surplus so you know if you're on track with your weight loss goals. The price of the Bodybugg includes a 3-month subscription to the web program as well as 2 phone sessions with a weightloss coach.

Note: for people inclined to doing more rigorous activity as part of their weightloss program, the Bodybugg might not provide results as accurate as a heart rate monitor, see the Polar F55 for a good option. See also the Omron HJ-720ITC for an accurate pedometer + data upload option at 1/10th the price.

The Biggest Loser

The Bodybugg has become an integral part to the show "The Biggest Loser" on NBC. It has been featured prominently as part of 24-hour Fitness' advertising on the program. The show does not typically go into the details of contestants' interactions with the device, although you see them wearing it throughout the episodes.

Just saw this on one of my favorite shows: The Biggest Loser. One of the trainers caught one of the contestants not working out when she wasn't around by looking at the statistics downloaded from the bodybugg. Such obvious product placement, but I don't know what it is about that show. I just love it.

I got two, one for my wife and the other for me. The bodybugg my wife recieved didnt work so we called the customer service. We basically got the run around and the problem still hasn't been resolved. We were told they were having trouble calling us back because they had so many escalated problems. Sounds like the bodybugg still has a lot of buggs. For the cost, I wouldn't recommend this product. Hard to burn calories when you're sitting on the phone waiting for "customer service".

I've had mine for about 4 months, and I love it. I've tested it all sorts of ways to see how accurate it is, and I have to say... I am impressed! I have lost an average of 1.5 lbs a week (right on target!) and attribute a good part of my success to my BodyBugg. What it does, is give you an unprecedented measure of CONTROL over your weight loss, by showing you exactly how much (or how little) you are actually burning. No room for denial or overestimation here! You have to log your food to get the full benefit of the program, but if you're committed to losing the weight then a little extra time to log food isn't such a big deal.

I've had the Bodybugg for about a month and totally love it. Well... a love hate. It makes weight loss for me very easy because it's all right there in front of you and it works as a great motivator to work a little harder. The website is "ok". That is really the only drawback. Only compatible on PC and ONLY Internet Explorer. What's funny is that it even looks kinda bad using Internet Explorer. You would think the fonts could be more vibrant since it only works on one browser. The fact that it's not mac compliant is a big con. It's so easy to port this stuff over... heck, the entire software is written using an archaic language. It would be quite simple for them to port it over to PHP or something that could work on any browser and platform. Think about how great it would be to be able to upload the food you eat from a PDA or iPhone. With all that... i totally recommend the bodybugg system for anybody that is serious about losing weight. there is a higher end version out there called Sensewear that offers a little nicer armband with an extra bell or whistle.

HI.. I am disappointed with the bodybugg.. I bought the bodybugg and the digital device thinking that I would not use the online monthly fee. That I would use one of the many food log programs like daily plate for logging food. I intended to use the digital device to take out my burnt calories and the steps and enter that into a spreadsheet with the calories from the food log website. issues There is no battery indicator on the device and I chew through a battery every week.. I guess i could just change the battery every Monday and be done with it. The bodybugg has a lot of functions to alert you to different things.. I set mine up to reminde me to get up from my desk and stretch twice a day. I also set it up with my weight and how many calries that i wanted to burn and what my exercise level was to be.. standard stuff and mandatory.. But of course once you set them up they dont get changed if you lose weight or make any other life changes. You need to re subscribe for a while so that you can adjust the base settings.
