Texas Instruments TI-89

The TI-89 is a popular graphing calculator made by Texas Instruments, originally released in 1998. It features powerful computer algebra system (CAS) that can solve albebraic expressions in symbolic terms; most other calculators solve in terms of number only. For example, entering (x^3-x^2-8x+12)/(x+3) returns x² − 4x + 4, which is pretty printed by default. The current version of the calculator that is sold in stores is the TI-89 Titanium model, released in 2004 to replace the popular original TI-89. In the United States, the TI-89 is allowed by the College Board on all calculator-permitted tests, including the SAT, however it is banned from some other tests and classrooms because of it's advanced function. The retail price of this calculator is $150.

TI-89 Titanium

The TI-89 Titanium was relased in the summer of 2004 as a replacement to the popular original TI-89 calculator. It expands the available amount of flash memory to four times of its predecessor, adds a mini-USB port for connectivity with a PC, other TI-89 calculators, or other calculator accessories including a full-size keyboard.

Case Swapping

It very common for students, in an effort to curtail their school's calculator restrictons, is to remove the internal components of the TI-89 and put in in the TI-83+ shell. There also have been students doing the reverse (ie. putting the TI-83 components inside the TI-89 shell) and selling the subsequent calculator as a true TI-89 and profitting in the process.

The Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CX is a graphing calculator with a high resolution colour display. The 3.2 inch display has a resolution of 320 x 240 and the ability to display 16-bit colour. Other features include a rechargeable battery that can provide up to two weeks of battery life, 3D graphing capability, and dynamic graphing. Several items are included with the package other than the calculator itself; these include a wall adapter for charging, USB computer cable, and a sliding case. The Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad is one of two graphing calculators (TI-Nspire / TI-Nspire CAS) released commercially in early 2010 as upgrades from the TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire with Clickpad (2008). In particular, the model hosts a new touchpad positioned beneath the display that allows for trackpad-like input and clickpad-like clicking. Like its immediate peer (the TI-Nspire CAS), the CAS w/Touchpad stores and displays values symbolically instead of as floating-point numbers. Plus it includes algebraic functions and calculus functions, making it an optimal choice for university students. Additional features include easier access to files and tools, a scratchpad functionality for performing quick calculations without opening a file, and compatibility with wireless student response/classroom polling systems.

Additional Information

The Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad lacks a testing mode LED indicator, meaning it cannot be used in the ACT or IB. It is however okay for SAT and AP exams.

The HP 35s replaces the HP 33 s model as the top of the range model in non-graphing scientific calculators from HP. It's case and keyboard are retro-styled in tribute to the HP 35 model from 1972 which was the world's first mass-produced pocket scientific calculator. It features a 2 line x 14 character display with additional annunciators, RPN or algebraic input, 31K of user memory, full programmability with direct and indirect registers, 42 inbuilt physical constants, unit conversions and a simultaneous equation solver in addition to the usual transcendental functions. The calculator works internally to 15 digit precision. Many features are carried over from the HP 33s model (which itself emulates the now defunct HP 32 SII model) with a number of changes to address that model's known usability issues. The main differences are in the keyboard which has a more conventional layout with a more legible colour scheme and a clearer dot matrix display with wider spacing between characters and a larger radix. There is however no direct operation in complex number mode with rectangular<>polar conversions now being a function of the selected display mode. There is also a fraction display mode which allows entry and display of results in either decimal or fraction format and time calculations are also possible.

The Texas Instruments TI-34 Multiview is a scientific calculator designed for geometry, general mathematics, statistics, pre-algebra, algebra I & II, trigonometry, science, and biology. It’s identical to the TI-30XS, except that it relies strictly on battery power. All other features are inherited, including a 4-line display that displays calculations in common Math Notion, the ability to scroll and edit patterns similar to a graphic calculator, and the ability to perform fraction-based computations. Though it doesn’t offer as much battery life, users nonetheless still recommend the TI-34 Multiview, as it does incorporate an intuitive interface useful for students transitioning from a dinky arithmetic calculator to a heavy-duty graphic calculator.

They maintain the same form factor, but add along a bevy of features including multiple representations, “grab & move” functionality, resizing, dynamic linking, and the ability to save and edit in-progress work. Plus specialized Windows and Macintosh software has been released that can essentially ‘mimic’ the unit’s functionalities. This means teachers don’t have to rely on putting the device underneath a projector light to display its content to their students. Featured is a TI-83 / TI-84 emulator that targets secondary schools still transitioning from the legacy models to the TI-Nspire series.

Additional Information

Since the TI-Nspire with Clickpad does not have a QWERTY keyboard, it can be used on the PSAT, SAT, SAT II, ACT, and AP Exams. Plus it relies on a Clikpad computer-like cursor control that can be used to point, move and click.
