It features a 12MP backside-illuminated BSI CMOS sensor; a fast f/2.8 28 mm wide-angle lens with a 30x optical zoom; a standard 3” LCD display; and an electronic viewfinder. Note the CMOS sensor, which is unique to a digital camera in that such sensors are typically used only in camcorders. Ultimately, this means the cam can be used to produce high quality images with reduced low noise at high ISO settings up to 12,800. The Max also records full 1080p videos. Additional features include optical image stabilization, a bevy of scene modes and artistic effects, built-in panorama functions, stereo speakers, and SD/SDHC expansion.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A350

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A350, along with the DSLR-A300 are two Digital SLR cameras from Sony. These models are essentially upgrades to the Alpha DSLR-A200 release in the fall of 2007. Both the 350 and 300 two distinct new features: 1) Live View mode for the LCD viewfinder, and 2) an articulating LCD screen. Also, the A350 offers a significant increase in its resolution, increasing to 14.2 megapixels, up from 10.2 megapixels in the A200. The A350 offers further penetration by Sony into the DSLR market, since the introduction of its first DSLR camera in the Alpha line, the Alpha DSLR-A100 release in the summer of 2006.

Features

14.2-megapixel Super HAD CCD

new Live View mode with secondary image sensor for the LCD

swiveling, articulating LCD screen

continuous burst mode: 2 fps

memory: compact flash media

ISO Sensitivity: 100 to 3,200

super SteadyShot in-camera image stabilization offers from 2.5 to 3.5 stops of compensation

Bionz Image Processor

Dynamic Range Optimizer: Normal DRO improves detail using standard gamma curves for fast shot-to-shot response time. Advanced DRO adjusts dynamic range area-by-area.

Anti-Dust Technology

Auto Pop-Up Flash

Eye-Start Autofocus System

9-Point Center Cross AF Sensor

40-segment honeycomb metering system

Scene Selection Modes: Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Sports, Sunset and Night Portrait/Night View situations

Creative Style Settings

2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD Screen

Index and Slide Show Display

High-Resolution Thumbnails for PhotoTV HD Viewing

Function Guide Display

Live View

Sony's implementation of live view places a second, low-resolution, dedicated image sensor to be used by the LCD viewfinder. The rationale behind Live View is to improve the response time of the digital viewfinder, so that it mimics the behavior of an optical viewfinder. The low-resolution sensor introduces less lag between the actual image and the image rendered to the LCD by requiring less processing time by the camera's internal circuitry. There is a mirror inside the pentamirror arrangement that reflects the image to the secondary live view sensor.

Availability and Pricing

The A350 will be released on March 21, 2008 and will retail for around $800 for the camera body only. The package including a 18-70mm lens will retail for $900. The A300 will sell for $800 with the lens.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9

With the massive growth in digital cameras, the market is becoming further segmented and specialized to appeal to very specific niches. The H9 and H7 from Sony are targeted directly towards the family with star athletes that want to capture all of those TSN Turning Points. Sony has engineered many features to accommodate the unique requirements that sport photos demand.

Most significant out of these new features is the Carl Zeiss (used in all Sony digital cameras) 15x optical zoom which is a substantial improvement over the previous high-end standard of 10x optical. To deal with the associated blur that comes with such an extreme zoom, Sony uses their Super Steady Shot technology which they claim achieves image stability without having to crop the picture like other anti-blur systems do.

Sony has also incorporated their high-end video processing chips into these cameras which increases the speed at which pictures can be taken and processed. The H9 and H7 have ISO3200 which lets you take pictures in low light without flash to minimize blur. Combining the fast processing with new predictive technology Sony is introducing an advanced sport shooting mode to take up to 100 continuous shots at frame-rate of 2.2 pictures per second.

For 2007 the H9 and H7 are the only cameras released by Sony that feature a new technology called NightShot which apparently uses infrared technology to capture pictures in situations with almost no light. Other features include a tilting LCD lens, recognizing up to 8 faces, and a high definition output port (custom cable sold separately) to view images directly on the TV.

Differences between H9 ($480) and H7 ($400)

The H9 features a 3" tilting LCD screen, while the H7's screen comes in at a smaller 2.5" and does not tilt.

Nikon D40

The Nikon D40 is an attempt by the massive camera maker to introduce digital SLRs to the mass-market with a more affordable price. Falling on the lower end of the high-end D series from Nikon, the D40 can be seen as the D50's smaller sibling. Despite being smaller and less expensive, Nikon has taken the time between the earlier D50's release, and the more recent D40 to upgrade various technologies making the D40 quite comparable to the more expensive D50. In fact many of the technologies incorporated in the D40 are inspired from the higher end D80 and D200 prosumer/professional grade cameras.

Notable features of the D40 include the same Nikon processing engine as in the D80/D200, in-camera retouching, help suggestions in the viewfinder, SDHC support, and an unlimited 2.5FPS continuous shooting mode. Note: SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) is a secure digital card format that allows for capacities beyond 2GB. ISO sensitivity ranges from 200-1600 and can reach an equivalent of ISO3200 with the HI 1 functionality.

One of the main differences with this D40 SLR and the other high-end models is that the camera does not contain an external focus pin. What this means is that only certain lens, namely AF-S and AF-I lenses, will be able to focus on the D40. Normal lenses will only be able to use the computer focus, not adjust the optical lens focus itself.

Composing on an LCD has its own advantages, and Olympus engineers asked the question: How can we design a new digital SLR that delivers not only the traditional through-the-lens optical viewfinder experience of an SLR, but also adds the ability to frame photos with an LCD like a compact camera? The solution to this technical challenge is the revolutionary Olympus EVOLT E-330 digital SLR – the world’s first interchangeable lens digital SLR to feature a true "Live View" image on the LCD screen, in addition to the optical viewfinder, and unite the best of both worlds.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A200

Sony's start into the world of Digital SLRs was quite a slow paced one. The first Sony branded model, the A100, appeared on the scene in June 2006 and it took over a year for it to be joined by a companion, the A700 prosumer model which was launched in September 2007. More recently though Sony has stepped up a gear and launched not one, but three cameras to replace the A100 - the DSLR A200, A300 and A350.

There is now something for everybody in the Sony line-up. The A350 for the feature-loving photographer on a budget, the A200 for those whose number one buying criterion is value-for-money and the A300 for bargain hunters who want a balance of the two. The A200 is, in terms of specification, not a million miles away from the veteran A100. It's got a larger screen, comes with an ISO3200 mode and user controlled High ISO noise reduction but in turn lacks the A100's depth of field preview (it's unsurprisingly much cheaper though).

Sony is not the only manufacturer which is diversifying its offerings in the entry-level sector and the A200 will have to face fierce competition in the bottom bracket of the market. Let's see how it shapes up on the following pages.

10.2 megapixel APS-C CCD
The A200's 'central organ' is a APS-C sized CCD chip with 10.2 million photosites.

Bionz Image Processor
Like the A700 and A350, the A200 is powered by the Bionz imaging processor (although presumably it's not exactly the same one that was optimized for the A700's CMOS sensor).

he Super SteadyShot system moves the sensor to compensate for user shake. The appearance of the mechanism suggests it may be the unit from the A700 (and A350).

Other new / upgraded features of note:

Larger LCD

10.2 MP sensor

New software bundle with all-new raw converter

Creative Styles (expansion of color modes function on A100)

ISO 3200

Optional high ISO noise reduction

RGB histograms

Price (body only)
(With 18-70mm kit lens)

• $460 / £260 [check]
• $460 / £270

Body material

Plastic exterior

The D70s builds on the success of its popular predecessor, the D70, with multiple internal and external refinements including an improved autofocus system, larger LCD monitor, the addition of a remote cord port, new graphic user interface, among several other enhancements. Designed for a broad range of consumers from experienced and amateur photographers to beginning photo enthusiasts and hobbyists, the D70s offers a proven track record of superior image quality, robust performance, and advanced new features. Its DX format 6.1-effective megapixel CCD sensor is optimized to deliver images with excellent sharpness and clarity. An improved autofocus system delivers enhanced performance, especially in Dynamic area AF and Dynamic area AF with closest subject priority modes. This combined with Nikon's unique Dynamic Buffer technology (that allows the camera to continuously take up to 144 pictures at a speed of three pictures per second*) makes the D70s even more responsive when photographing fast moving subjects.

The Nikon D700 is a professional, Digital SLR released in August 2008. After the highly acclaimed Nikon D3 was released in April 2008, most reviewers were pleasantly surprised by the D 700. It has been critically praised and is said to offer pro-level performance and an extensive array of features. Nikon brings its exclusive EXPEED digital image processing to work with its original 12.1 megapixel FX- Format CMOS sensor to deliver the widely acclaimed breathtakingly rich image quality. The camera has has the option of hand-held or tripod modes to suit the shooting requirements. It has a rugged magnesium-alloy construction and extensive dust and moisture protection. A 3 in. super density VGA color monitor and an optical (through the lens) viewfinder are included. It also has good speed, giving five frames per second continuous shooting. The big drawback of the D700 is its lack of resolution compared to some of its competitors. Cannon and Sony have similar cameras with a greater camera resolution (megapixels). Even so most reviewers find the Nikon D700 to be extremely versatile and a good performer in the studio and on location.

Nikon D2X

The new D2X Professional digital SLR has a 12.4 million pixel DX format CMOS sensor, by default the D2X can shoot at 5 fps, however it has an interesting 6.8 milion pixel option which reduces the sensing area (to a FOV crop of 2x) but increases the frame rate to 8 fps. Hence the D2X can be seen as two cameras in one, a 12.4 million pixel high resolution shooter and a 6.8 million pixel high frame rate shooter. Obviously the use of CMOS is new to Nikon but also new on this camera is a four channel read-out from the sensor and the ability to perform WB correction to the analogue data before it is digitized. Also new is the WT-2 wireless transmitter with 802.11 b/g support and wireless Capture Control.
