Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM

$470.00 Released July, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Good build quality - metal mount, nice feeling material, comfortable zoom and focus rings. Affordable price point. Easy to find.

The Cons:No image stabilization on a lens that would heavily rely on it. Very weak aperture - F/4.5-5.6, poor for low light shooting, isolation of subjects with DOF. Mediocre optical quality - you get what you pay for (very poor corner resolution above 100mm).

The Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM is a telephoto zoom lens built for easy portability. Five separate zoom groups are used to reduce the length to 4.8 in, and rear focusing keeps the zoom action internal.

This means that the lens does not lengthen to zoom or focus, reducing the potential for damage when being transported. The lens does not rotate to focus either, allowing filters to remain in position. Autofocus runs quickly and quietly using an Ultra-Sonic Motor (USM) system, and zoom is handled through a standard ring-type control. The maximum aperture ranges from f4.5 to f5.6, depending on how zoomed the lens is. The focal length allows closer subjects as well, and proper clarity can be achieved when the subject is as near as 1.5 meters.
