Canon's successor to the ultra successful Digital Rebel XT.  In the US the camera will be called the Digital Rebel XTi and in the rest of the world referred to as the EOS 400D.  There are many obvious improvements to this model over the original XT.  The most significant are the 10.1 MP resolution, 9-point autofocusing system, automatic dust removal (using pulse vibrations), and a much larger and brighter screen.

I rarely ever take pictures with the old point-and-shoot lying around, but still, when I see these new releases and start reading about the DSLRs I get so pumped and hyped up. It just be so cool holding this great camera taking excellent pictures. I know in reality I'd never use more than 1% of what this camera offers. But darn if it doesn't look super sweet!

My father in law just got one, and it is amazing. I'm so tempted.....perhaps one of these days I'll make an impulse purchase.

Well that was quick! If you have a flickr account or other place you put up your photography please share. I have to say I'm quite jealous.

I am doing some research into a DSLR for xmas for myself from Santa (aka the family). This camera seems to be the best bang for the buck. Can any suggest any other Canon DSLR I should be considering? I will be mainly using it to take photos of cars, inside, outside, and on a track.

I've added some competitors. It's main, direct competitor is the Nikon D80 with very similar specs, features, and price. It came out at about the same time as well. At first glance, I think I'd go for the D80 because of it's speed and feature set. It is faster than the Rebel XTi and has spot metering.

Oh, and I recommend checking out the flickr camera finder page for each. I've added links to them on both reports. You can look at a ton of actual photos taken with these cameras. The EOS 400D and D80 are two of the most popular cameras in the world, and I'm sure you'd be happy with either of them. :)

Thanks for the helpful information, I went and read all the reviews you listed under "external links" and spoke to a couple friends with the XTi as well as the D80, and ended up getting the XTi in Detroit for ~$800 USD taxes included (with a bag and 4 gig Lexas high speed memory card).

I have a Canadian Canon brochure from last winter 2006, and the price of the XTi was $1100 CAD +tax. They seem to have taken a huge ($300) price drop over the last year. Bonus for me, timing couldn't have be more perfect!
