new pro/con: Pure audio mode which shuts down front panel display and video circuitry for absolute clean music listening.
new pro/con: Even with the 2MB buffer, still has a slight pause on DVD-Video disc layer change.
new pro/con: No distance compensation or DSD bitstream output for SACD.
new pro/con: Good value especially if you can get it for about $100 on clearance.
new pro/con: Built in Dolby Digital, DTS, SACD, and DVD-A multi-channel decoders with bass management.
new pro/con: Great sound quality for CDs, SACDs, and DVD-Audio.
new pro/con: Nice build quality with gold plated rear jacks and aluminum face plate.
new pro/con: Fast load times for DVDs and CDs.
new pro/con: Plays almost every disc available except for blu-rays.
new pro/con: Excellent DVD video upconverting using HDMI and Faroudja DCDi processing.

new pro/con: Firmware can be upgraded by either ethernet or by burning an update CD from Sony's website.
new pro/con: Slow changing tracks between DVD chapters.
new pro/con: Will not play MP3 CDs or DVDs.
new pro/con: Will not play burned DVD movies, recognizes the disc but says "operation cannot be performed on this disc"
new pro/con: Great Blu-ray and DVD playback performance.
disagreed: "No local storage, therefore not Profile 2.0 compliant"

new pro/con: No binding post speaker terminals (the RX-4109 which replaced it does though).
new pro/con: No direct station tuning available.
new pro/con: Good build quality for an entry level product.
new pro/con: Has tone direct function for pure sound reproduction.
new pro/con: Discrete amplifier design plays loud and clear.
new pro/con: Good sound quality for the price.

new pro/con: Bi-amp capable speaker terminals.

"The AVR-988 is a great receiver. May not be as powerful as some in this price range but has plenty of power with a sophisticated sound quality that can only come from Denon. This receiver is not for the home theater novice but experienced users can use the manual to help guide you through the new features. Any questions can be fowarded to Denon's great customer service techs and they will help you."

new pro/con: Does not blend on screen menu over video sources through the HDMI output. (Switches from video source to menu instead)
new pro/con: Great video processing of analog standard definition sources to 1080P output (HDMI out only of course)
new pro/con: Audyssey RoomAuto EQ gives a graphical interface of what frequency bands it adjusts to achieve "corrected sound". (Not all competing receivers do this)
new pro/con: Only 2 HDMI inputs (newer model AVR-989 does offer 4)
new pro/con: Small bug that affects input display signal in DTS-MA 7.1 (reads it as 5.1 but still decodes in 7.1). Can be fixed by sending unit off to Denon for a firmware update.
new pro/con: Plenty of clean power even in 7 channel operation
new pro/con: Decodes all the latest HD surround formats
new pro/con: Great build and sound quality
