The Intel Core i7-990X is a top-of-the-line hexa-core processor that claimed the place of Intel's flagship commercial processor from the Intel Core i7-980X. The 990X improves upon the 980X in terms of clock speed only as it is clocked at 3.46GHz as compared to the 980X's 3.33GHz (with a max turbo frequency of 3.73GHz with Turbo Boost technology as opposed to 3.6GHz). Otherwise, the two hexa-core processors sport the same features and technologies, including: a 12MB cache, 32nm micro-architecture, Hyper-Threading technology and a 130-watt max TDP.

The i7-990X's 32nm architecture allows it to provide more processing power than 45nm chips while requiring less power than a 45nm chip of equivalent processing capability. Its Hyper-Threading technology allows the i7-990X to effectively behave as if it had 12 cores as each physical core is seen by a computer's OS as two cores, allowing each core to handle twice as many tasks simultaneously. Meanwhile, the i7-990X's Turbo Boost technology allows it to automatically boost its clock speed as needed to ensure optimal performance.

Intel Core i7-2617M

The Intel Core i7-2617M is a second generation, dual core Intel Core i7 processor that features the Sandy Bridge architecture. It was built through a 32nm manufacturing process and features enhanced performance and greater energy efficiency. Though the reduced instruction-set greatly enhances performance, it’s not the only thing affecting it. There’s also an improved caching system wherein the L3 cache is now shared between both cores. Also featured is an integrated Intel HD graphics chip that performs 2x better than those featured on first-generation Core i7 CPUs. This particular CPU runs at 1.5GHz, but comes with Turbo Boost functionality up to 2.6GHz. The biggest change though from previous generations is the socket, which switches from the standard LGA 1155 to a new FCBGA1023 socket. Note also that this CPU is designed for mobile laptops, and so supports a low voltage TDP. Also, the the i7-2617M can process videos 17x faster, process 3D video over HDMI v1.4.

The Intel Pentium G840 is a budget oriented dual core processor. Its low retail price is accounted for by the lack of some advanced features such as virtualization for directed I/O, Intel Trusted execution technology, and AES new instructions. The G840 has a stock clock speed of 2.8GHz, a 6MB smart cache, and is built on the 32nm process. For a budget processor it has a relatively low max thermal output of 65W which is good for both power consumption and heat management. The Intel Core i3-2100T is a dual-core 64-bit CPU that is the low voltage alternative to the Core i3-2100. The Intel Core i7-920 is the base model of three high-end x86-64 desktop processors. The i7 moniker refers to Intel’s seventh architectural generation, the Nehalem family of processors. Marketed to those seeking maximum performance, the Core i7-920 features a quad-core chip design with a clock speed frequency of 2.66 GHz with 8MB of L3 cache. One of the largest changes with the Core i7 is what Intel calls Quick Path, an innovation that allows for significantly increased memory bandwidth performance via the triple channel DDR3 memory controller. Compared to the 65W (TDP) AMD Phenom II X4 910e, this processor uses 75 watts more power. The X4 965 features 2MB of L2 cache and 6MB of L3 cache on a 45nm chip design. In terms of motherboard compatibility, sockets AM2, AM2+ and AM3 can be used. For memory, DDR2 (up to 1066MHz) or DDR3 (up to 1333MHz) can be used. The general consensus amongst reviewers indicates that overclocking is well supported, but will use a fair amount of extra power while doing so. Currently it is unavailable for consumer purchase. Like the Sempron 200U of the same series it uses 65 nm technology but has an improved clock speed of 1.5 GHz for better performance. It has support for numerous digital media instructions and an integrated DDR2 memory controller. It also has a single HyperTransport link, allowing point-to-point speeds of 800MHz and 6.4 GB/s of bandwidth. It also has 256KB of L2 cache. The Sempron 210U is capable of simultaneous 64- and 32-bit processing. The 210U's thermal design power is a comparatively low 15W, however this is significantly more than the same-series 200U which has a TDP rated at 8W. This increase in TDP is due to the higher 1.5 GHz clock speed seen in the 210U as opposed to the slower 1 GHz 200U.

AMD Phenom X4

The AMD Phenom X4 is AMD's first quad core processor line, based on the same 65nm process used for earlier Brisbane chips. Introduced in November 2007 the line suffered a massive setback when an issue was found within the chip's buffer which could cause system lockups in rare occasions. While patchable, this fix incurred an undesireable 10% performance penalty, and led to poor sales and negative publicity.

Once fixed, the line was relaunched, carrying a new naming model. Important destinctions between AMD's quad core design and Intel's include AMD's implimentation of an L3 cache (generally 2MB of cache shared between all 4 cores) and an on-chip memmory controller, a component still found within the northbridge on Intel platforms.

Today the line continues to lag behind Intel's offerings, causing great distress for the company management and shareholders alike.

Intel Atom E620T

The Atom E620T is a low-end CPU manufactured by Intel. It is very similar to another Intel CPU from the Atom E600 line, the Atom E660T. Both CPUs can support up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, and both use integrated graphics technology. The Intel Atom N450 is a 45nm processor for embedded motherboards, most often found in netbooks. Released on December 21st 2009, this is the successor to 2008’s Atom N270. The single core Atom N450 features a 1.66GHz clock speed, 512KB of L2 cache and a FSB (memory) speed of 667MHz. This energy efficient processor is rated at 5.5 watts TDP, meaning very little electricity is required for this chip to function. Most netbooks with this processor will use around 15 watts of total power, an amount considerably less than a full-sized notebook computer. The Phenom II X6 1055 is a six core processor from AMD, released in mid 2010. This chip is directly comparable to AMD’s more expensive X6 1090T, a marginally faster six core processor. Intel Core i5-540UM

The Intel Core i5-540UM is the high-end model in the low voltage Core i5 processors line. it has a clock speed of 1.2GHz GHz and a turbo boost speed of 2GHz. It retains many of the same features in the standard Core i5 processors. The 540UM is essentially a lower clocked version of the standard Core i5 processors, by doing so Intel have managed to reduce the TDP (amount of heat output) from 35W to 18W enabling the use of these processors in notebooks designed for portability and extended battery life. Some minor changes from the standard parts includes a lower memory bandwidth and it is only compatible with DDR3-800 memory (as opposed to 800 and 1066). It features a built in integrated graphics processor, virtualisation technology, hyper-threading, enhanced speed step, and idel states.

The Intel Atom D510 is a 45nm processor for embedded desktop motherboards, most often found in nettops. Released on December 21st 2009, this is the successor to the Atom 330 processor. The dual core Atom D510 features a faster 1.66GHz clock speed, 1MB of L2 cache and a FSB speed of 665MHz. This energy efficient processor is rated at 13 watts TDP, meaning very little electricity is required for this chip to function. Most nettops with this processor will use around 40 watts of total power, an amount considerably less than a full-sized desktop computer. Supported processor features include MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, Intel 64, XD bit and Hyper-Threading. Users have the option of running a 64-bit operating system on this chip as well, such as Windows 7 x64.

The AMD Phenom X4 9150e continues AMD's efficient line of processors, reserving itself at a merely decent 1.8GHz in order to maintain a 65W thermal envelope (TDP). In comparison to other quad and even triple core processors which operate with a TDP of 95W, the 9150e falls within the range of heat and energy expenditure of most dual core CPUs. Thus, while the 9150e is no powerhouse, it allows for cool and quiet operation while maintaining full use the latest quad core AMD technology.

The Intel Core i7-975 Extreme is a 45nm, desktop quad-core “Bloomfield Extreme Edition” microprocessor engineered for the most demanding multi-threaded games and multimedia applications. Released on May 31st of 2009 as a successor to the 3.2GHz Core i7-965 XE (11-17-08) and the 2.66GHz-3.06GHz 'Bloomfield' cores, the Core i7-975 XE boasts an enhanced 3.33GHz core speed. Like its predecessors, the i7-975 relies on Nehalem MicroArchitecture with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology to deliver 8 simultaneous processing threads. Additional notable features of the i7-975 XE include an Intel QuickPath Interconnect interface (replaces FSB) for enhanced data cache per core, 'Turbo Boost' technology, and Intel Virtualization technology. A major drawback to the Intel Core i7-975 Extreme is its lack of support for error-correcting memory, which some critics suggest makes the i7 not ideal for gaming performance.

Intel Core i7 is currently a family of three Intel Desktop x86-64 processors, Core i7 is the first Intel family to be released using the Intel Nehalem microarchitecture and is the successor to the Intel Core 2 family. All three models are quad-core processors. The Core i7 identifier applies to the initial family of processors codenamed Bloomfield. The moniker Core i7 does not have a deeper meaning, but continues the use of the successful Core brand. Core i7 was officially launched on November 17, 2008 in the USA.

The AMD Athlon II X4 605e is a 64-bit quad core processor based on the Phenom II architecture. As part of the “Propus” family, this 45 nanometer chip is designed for the AM2+/AM3 motherboard socket and has a TDP energy rating of 45 watts. Because of the relatively low energy usage, AMD is marketing this product as part of their energy efficient lineup. The default clock frequency is set at 2.3 GHz, while the processor multiplier is locked in at 11.5x. In terms of L2 cache, users will find 4x 512 KB which combines into a total of 2 MB. Intel Atom N455

The Intel Atom N455 is a replaces the N450 as the base model processor in the Atom N4xx line. The main only change from the N450 is the added capability for DDR3 memory which offers lower power requirements but minimal performance increase. Though whilst the memory now uses less power, the max TDP has now increased from 5.5W or 6.5W; the reason to that remains unseen. Other features are identical, this includes: Intel Hyper Threading, Intel 64 bit, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology, and Execute Disable Bit. The Atom N455 also comes with integrated graphics which considering its low capabilities, is only suitable for basic tasks.

Intel Core i5-750S

The Intel Core i5-750s is a higher-end, quad-core desktop processor. The CPU is a more energy-efficient version of the i5-720, reducing thermal design power from 95W to 82W. The two processors are positioned at the top of the i5 series as its only quad-core members. The i5-750S comes with a reduced clock speed of 2.40 GHz, but can be overclocked to 3.2 GHz like the i5-750, and features an 8MB L3 cache. The CPU is similar to the "S" version of the entry-level model in the top-of-the-line i7 series, the 2.53GHz i7-860S, sharing a Nehalem microarchitecture and Turbo Boost, among other features, but notably disabling simultaneous multithreading technology. The i5-750S also features XD bit, which helps defend against certain viruses, but lacks Trusted Execution Technology, a more advanced safety feature found in dual-core i5-series units.

AMD Phenom II

Officially released in January 2009, the Phenom II is an update to the original Phenom line. The first AMD processors created on a 45nm fabrication process, the shrinking of transistors has allowed AMD to make significant changes to the chip. Besides implementing several tweaks to the original 65nm Agena core, the newer Deneb core includes an expanded L3 cache (2MB to 6MB). Besides this, the 45nm process also allows for lower power draw at higher clock speeds - meaning the newer Phenom processors can attain clockspeeds much higher than those of the original Phenoms, while using less electricity. Original Phenom II processors were supported on AM2+ motherboards and only support DDR2 RAM. The AM3 socket, and compatible AM3 Phenom II processors was released a month later in February.

The Phenom II X4 925 is a quad core processor from AMD, released in late 2009. This 64-bit processor runs at 2.8GHz, has 6MB of L3 cache and supports both AM2+ and AM3 sockets. Compared to the similar X4 920, this “Deneb” CPU has the same clock speed, cache and multiplier. However, this model is a step up with a somewhat faster HyperTansport bus and better energy consumption at 95 watts instead of its predecessor’s 135W. The Intel Xeon L5640 is a high end CPU. It is designed to be used in servers with resource-heavy traffic. It features Intel Hyper Threading technology, Intel Trusted Execution technology, and Enhanced Intel Speedstep technology. The Xeon L5640 uses Intel Hyper Threading in order to run the CPU more efficiently. It results in higher processing throughput, and overall improved performance (most noticeably with multi-threaded software). The Intel Trusted Execution technology is a security feature that provides hardware based mechanisms to protect against software based attacks. It also helps protect the integrity of the users data. The Intel Xeon E7530 is a top of the line CPU. It is designed to be used in servers which have a heavy application load on them. It features six cores, Intel Hyper Threading technology, and Intel Turbo Boost technology. The six cores of the Xeon E7530 give the processor extremely efficient performance, being able to handle a very large number of applications, and a high server load.
