AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56

The AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 is an entry level, 1.8 GHz dual core processor designed for mobile computers. Earlier offerings of this CPU were based on 90-nm Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology which has since been changed to a 65-nm Silicon-Germanium core(as of May 2007). This more efficient technology uses less power and has less heat dissipation, allowing for slimmer profile notebook design. The basic architecture is based on the AMD Athlon 64 processors which were themselves based on AMD's legendary K8 technology. One major improvement aside from the dual core CPU would be the dual channel DDR2 Memory controller which frees up valuable Ram as well as reduces load on the CPU(identical pairs of Ram are required to run in dual channel mode). These processors compete with Intel mobile processors Intel Core and Intel Core 2.

Features

1.8 GHz dual core

65 nm Silicon-Germanium build

Dual memory controller

PowerNow! speed throttling technology saves power and extends life of CPU

31W TDP(power consumption)

Designed for mobile computers

AMD Athlon X2 4850E

The 45w TDP AMD Athlon X2 4850E processor is part of an energy efficient series based on AMDs dual core 65nm Athlon X2 K8. Made up of the 4050e (BE-2350), 4450e (BE-2400) and the 4850e, the new 45w envelope is the only advancement of this series. This improvement allows for cooler operation at similar performance levels, which in turn allows for quieter operation for less of a need to displace the heat generated by their hotter brethren. The chips run at 2.1, 2.3 and 2.5GHz respectively. Not a gaming or encoding chip by any stretch of the imagination, these processors are best suited for media center PCs or in any application where quiet and cool operation take precedence over performance.

While it is outpaced by Intel's latest 8000 series, this AMD chip still offers a great price:performance ratio for those who require an overclockable high performance chip on a budget. Based on the most recent 65nm process and rated at 2.6GHz, this chip has a thermal output comparable to that of the rest of AMD's dual core processors. Like all of AMD's "black edition" products, the 5000+ gives enthusiasts the ability to better overclock through its unlocked CPU multiplier.

With the last top-of-the-line 9600 set at only 2.3GHz, this step was considered AMD's number one obstacle to become competitive against Intel's offerings. Sadly, hurtling this obstacle came at a price of energy efficiency and thermal output. With a TDP of 125W, the 9850 is just barely at par performance wise with Intel's budget quad core, the 6600, itself with a TDP of only 90W in comparison. Similar to the other Black Edition chips, the 9850 BE has an unlocked multiplier, enabling computer enthusiasts to push the physical limits of their hardware.

Intel Core i7-820QM

The Intel Core i7-820QM is an addition to the Intel mobile quad core processor line up. It has a higher clock speed on 1.73GHz and 8MB cache compared to the cheaper 720QM. Both are build on the 45nm fabrication process unlike their dual core i3 and i5 counterparts which are build on the 32nm process meaning they are cheaper, less power consuming and cooler running. Also worth noting that the 820QM has a thermal design power (TDP) of 45W which is reasonable for a mobile quad core processor but is 10W higher than the ones of its dual core counetrparts. It does feature Intel's speed step technology which will dynamically adjust the clock speed depending on the load. Whilst the 820QM is not designed to provide a full day's of battery life, it is a good choice for notebook buyers looking for the power of a Core i7 quad core processor on the go whether it might be gaming or heavy video editing.

Specifications

This CPU retains the same design features as the rest of the family, but has been given a 35W TDP(thermal design point, or power consumption) rating. This means it dissipates more heat than it's slower(rated 31W TDP) cousins, in fact this and the remaining faster CPU's in this group are all 35W TDP. Build wise, as per the entire line, all have undergone design changes as of May 2007 which changed from 90-nm Silicon-on-Insulator(SOI) core composition to a 65-nm Silicon-Germanium based core making them smaller and more efficient with better heat dissipation. This has brought them into the ring with Intel Core and Core 2 processors in terms of performance and in AMD's case, affordability. 512KB shared L2 cache is also a common feature of these processors(meaning half a megabyte is the limit for each core), as is the dual memory controller which enables two streams of RAM data transfer at once when using identical sticks of RAM.

Since an upgrade from 90-nm core composite technology to a 65-nm Silicon-Germanium based core, this line of processor has become efficient and fast enough to be the main competition for Intel based CPU's, and sometimes at better value. Dual memory controller enables the simultaneous use of identical sticks of Ram through two streams, reducing the 'bottleneck' effect of high speed data transmission. Running multiple applications at once and gaming are also benefited from a dual core CPU. PowerNow! is a power saving feature common to this family of processors that reduces voltage from 1.1V to 0.8V as well as reducing the clock speed to 800MHz during idle mode.

These processors, unlike the Core 2 Extreme Processors for desktops, have only two independent cores. It uses new 64-bit architecture which enables twice the amount of information that the CPU can process at a time. It also features a Digital Thermal Sensor that is embedded in the CPU that measures the temperature to optimize the operation of the processor. The Core 2 Extreme Mobile series also have Wide Dynamic Execution which improves the execution speed and efficiency of the processor, and Virtualization Technology which allows one computer to operate as multiple “virtual” platforms.
