An immediate successor to the original Pentium Extreme Edition 840 (April 16th, 2005), the Intel Pentium D 820 (peers: 830, 840, 805) was designed to make dual-core technology affordable to the masses. It features two 90nm Prescott cores on a single die with 1MB of L2 per core, giving it a total clock speed of 2.8GHz. Note that the D 820 lacks Hyper-Threading and EIST, as well as support for Intel's x86 virtualization. However, the D 820 supports Intel 64 (formerly EM64T), XD Bit, and an LGA775 form factor. It is guaranteed to work on CPUs based on 945-, 955-, 965-, and 975- series Intel chipsets, plus the nForce 4 SLI Intel Edition and ATI Radeon Xpress. The Intel Pentium D 820 retails for $99.99 and comes with a 3 year limited warranty.

As part of the AMD Sempron Mobile series, this processor is designed for use in mobile applications such as thin and light notebook computers. AMD has released three different single-core microprocessors with the Sempron Mobile 3600+ label, this latest coming in Q2 2007. This third generation of the Sempron Mobile 3600+ is identical to the second generation processor of the same designation with the exception that is uses newer 65 nm technology and features the newer "Sherman" core. The first Sempron Mobile 3600+ became available in 2006, used older 90 nm technology, featured a slightly higher clock speed at 2.2 GHz and suffered from a lower L2 cache size (128 KB) and much higher TDP rating of 62 W.

AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-64

The AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-64 is a dual core, 2.2 GHz mobile computer processor. Affordability and competitive specs have placed this line of CPU's as the main contender for Intel's Core 2 family of processors. Dual memory controller is a key feature which allows you to access two identical sticks of RAM at once, reducing the bottleneck effect of data transfer. In simple terms, two streams of data can now be accessed simultaneously so one stick can be freed up for other tasks. The TL-64 was upgraded along with the rest of the line in May 2007, which saw a switch from a 90nm Silicon-on-Insulator composition to a smaller and more efficient 65nm Silicon-Germanium based design.

Power consumption has also increased in this, one of the four fastest of the series which are rated at 35W TDP(thermal design power). Although Intel's Core 2 routinely out perform AMD Turion processors, the difference is minimal enough for the average user and the price difference is what keeps it a top selling CPU. Performance of the Turion line is also maximized when combined with an integrated graphics card, maybe exceeding Intel processors in this instance.

Features

2.2 GHz dual core

65 nm Silicon-Germanium build

Dual memory controller

Made up of the 4050e (BE-2350), 4450e (BE-2400) and the 4850e, the new 45w envelope is the only advancement of this series. This improvement allows for cooler operation at similar performance levels, which in turn allows for quieter operation for less of a need to displace the heat generated by their hotter brethren. The chips run at 2.1, 2.3 and 2.5GHz respectively. Not a gaming or encoding chip by any stretch of the imagination, these processors are best suited for media center PCs or in any application where quiet and cool operation take precedence over performance.

Running at 2.6GHz stock speed the "Black Edition" moniker denotes its ability to be over clocked more easily by computer enthusiasts by utilizing the unlocked CPU multiplier. This additional speed comes at a price however: with a 140W TDP it is evident that AMD have been struggling to produce faster chips while keeping a hold on increased power consumption and heat production.

Due to the TLB bug found within the first B2 stepping release, however, the release of the chip was met with lackluster fanfare. While still a considerable powerhouse CPU, the 9600 was replaced with a later B3 stepping core and renamed the 9650. About a month after it's release, a more expensive model, the 9600BE was released. This release allowed computer enthusiasts to more easily overclock by allowing the CPU multiplier to be changed.

This CPU is commonly found in inexpensive notebooks, as it’s suited for users with basic computing needs. This CPU is directly comparable to the slightly less powerful Core 2 Duo T5500, which is slower by approximately 200 MHz and lacks built-in virtualization technology. For users requiring a greater deal of processing power, the high-end T7800 provides increased performance with a faster clock and bus speed and additional L2 cache.

The T5500 comes with 2 cores at 1.83 GHz, 2 MB of L2 cache and a 667 MHz front side bus. People who use their laptop for basic multimedia functionality such as watching online video and listening to music should find this processor more than adequate. 64-bit versions of Windows 7 are supported, in addition to other OSes using this technology. For those concerned about battery life, the CPU itself will use approximately 34 watts of electricity at maximum.

Made up of the BE-2300, 2350 and 2400 the new 45w envelope is the only advancement of this series. This improvement allows for cooler operation at similar performance levels, which in turn allows for quieter operation for less of a need to displace the heat generated by their hotter brethren. The chips run at 1.9, 2.1 and 2.3 GHz respectively. The series was refreshed/renamed with the newer 4050e (2350), 4450e (2400) and the 4850e, which runs at 2.5 GHz.
