The D-Link DGS-1008D is an 8-port auto-negotiating 10/100/1000 Mbps gigabit switch. It is marketed as a "Green Ethernet" product, by reducing power use in two ways: 1) detect link status and reduce power usage to idle ports, and 2) reduce power usage according to attached cable length (done automatically by the switch itself). The actual amount of power saved depends on the number of connected computers, length of each cable, and the amount of time that computers are idle during the day. D-Link claims 10% power savings for 8 connected active computers all the way up to 80% power savings with no active computers. Time-of-day power savings would be 40% if your network is dormant for 14 hrs a day. The maximum current draw for the switch itself is 4.5 Watts. It retails for around $60 and was first released in May, 2008.
