David responded to the thread Trying to get into vinyl

January 13, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Recently I've started to really get into The Beatles and figured I should go and buy some old-school vinyl LPs to really experience them. But I pretty much know nothing about vinyl and record players. Could someone give me a rundown of what kind of player I should get? I'm looking for just an average player, nothing crappy and nothing super great. Also, a rundown of all the types of vinyl would be cool too. I think there are different RPM based vinyl records out there and you need a player that can rotate at the different speeds. Happy listening!

David responded to the thread A new type of record company

March 2, 2007 at 11:40 pm

A few weeks ago, Will.I.Am came to Google and talked about how he makes music. In that discussion, he talked about his new record company, Musicane.com. What makes Musicane so different than an EMI, BMG, etc? Is it the fact a musician created the company? No, it's the entire business model that just might be what the music industry needs to address the new digital era.Rather than trying to get a record deal, why not distribute your music online? That's what Musicane provides you, a distribution channel direct to consumers. You can upload any content (be it music, videos, ringtones, etc), set the price and watch the money roll in. Like any record label, they have to take a cut and that seems variable according to their website. But you still keep up to 80% of each sale. Think about that, you get to keep up to $0.80 for every $1.00 you sell. With 1 million downloads of a song you create, that could be $800,000 in your pocket (pre-tax of course). The website itself is very 2.0 and plugs into other sites quite nicely. Will.I.Am gave a demo where he created a ringtone at Google, then uploaded it to Musicane and then linked that upload on his BlackEyedPeas.com website profile. There was a slick Flash interface that had a demo of the clip and a checkout button to purchase the ringtone. An artist can upload their content in a matter of minutes and have it available for sale to everyone connected to the Internet. This seems like only the first step and this model can be improved upon in the months and years to come. But it seems like the first right step to give more power to the artist and the consumer. Supply and demand will dictate whether this business model will be successful (hopefully the supply is high quality). I for one will be part of the demand if the supply is there.

Either the portion dispensed will have to be small and thus making it useless or it will ruin your food. Unless there is some sort of control - but that still leads to the problem of different people using the same setting."

A 24" apple monitor alone is around $800 or $900. Spend $1000 bucks more and you have a kick ass computer as well. It would be cheaper to build your own computer and get a 24" monitor, but it wouldn't be as this iMac. If I didn't already have a computer and a MacBook Pro, I'd be all over this in a heart beat. It even uses the new MXM mobile video card format so you can theoretically upgrade your integrated graphics. Although no products actually exist in the retail world that use this format."

I have no desire to buy a PS2/XBox/PS3/XBox 360 because the games have gotten so complicated. The learning curve on the marque games are not worth my time anymore (to me at least). I want to pick up a game, play it for 30 minutes and actually accomplish something. I think the Wii will do just that and then some with it's innovative controller. It takes so long to learn what all the different buttons do for each game. This is also coming from someone who as a kid played FFVII for over 100 hours (not to mention the 60+ hours with Beyond the Beyond on the PS and all the other hundreds of hours mastering every game I've purchased). Now, I just want to swing my Wii controller and play some tennis or golf all day long."

The price to screen size ratio of DLP is too great to ignore. I can get a comparable 50" DLP for the price of a 32" LCD. I'm not looking to hang anything on a wall, so the size of a DLP doesn't really matter. I just wish they good get the weight of DLP TVs down a bit more so moving won't be such a hassle.

August 28, 2006 at 9:10 pm

Ok, after looking around at prices of LCD TVs, I want to know if 1080p is really worth the extra dough. What readily available video sources are there that are actually 1080p? I know I won't be buying anything other than DVDs until the whole Blu-ray/HD-DVD stuff is sorted out (who knows, another format may trump both of them). As for gaming, I only plan on buying a Nintendo Wii in the short term. I know the Wii only does 480p so 1080p is pretty useless in that regard. What is the signal quality of HDTV that you can get from cable companies? Is it just 720p or do they actually have 1080p channels these days? Is this a standard thing with different cable providers (or will switching providers allow me to receive 1080p signals)? Are there plans for something other than 1080p in the next 5 years? Am I REALLY missing out if I just get a TV with just 720p/1080i (btw, is 720p better in quality than 1080i still?) vs. 1080p? Will I be kicking myself in 3 years wishing I splurged 3 years ago?

So don't waste your money on other wooden IKEA beds (it comes in at least 3 different colours as well)."

David responded to the thread Buying an LCD TV

August 25, 2006 at 2:47 am

With great power comes great responsibility -- an uncle of mine once said (OK, not my uncle, but A uncle said it). Today's power is in the form of the all-mighty buck that helps companies decide what to manufacture. TVs are no exception to this rule and especially LCD TVs. What I want to know is what features are actually useful on these TVs and what's marketing fluff. My findings... The latest and greatest in video quality is 1080p, but to really get the most out of a 1080p TV, you need 1080p quality content. Since the whole Blu-ray/HD-DVD thing is still not settled, I am ignoring 1080p all together. Another point with 1080p is you need a large screen to really see the quality that quality video's bring. The XBox 360 and PS3 both support 1080p (I actually dont' know this for a fact, but I'm assuming they do) so if you really want to leverage your systems, a 1080p TV is the way to go. A high contrast ratio seems to be a good thing to get sharp images rather than blurry ones. I actually don't know if this is true but Samsung's marketing material seems to indicate this. HDMI is the latest and greatest in video connection methods. You WANT a TV with HDMI so when the whole Blu-ray/HD-DVD battle settles you can use the best connection (this is like buying a Ferarri and using Octane 87 gas instead of Octane 94). A viewing angle of 178 degrees seems to be the new standard. This is just the horizontal viewing angle and the vertical viewing angle is usually much worse. So if you can go and see your TV in a store, check above and below the screen to make sure it still looks decent. You want as many bits of colour processing as you can get. 10-bit processing is the highest available today and this just gives you a larger number of colours the TV can accurately reproduce. Response times are a poor indicator of what an LCD TV can actually do. Most of the these numbers are based on a single pixel changing from one shade of grey to another shade of grey. However, if a TV can't even do this fast, I don't want to see how long a colour to colour transition would take. This is important so you don't get something called "ghosting". Ghosting is basically the LCD TV creating a blurred image during scenes of quick motion. It seems like 8ms response times are what the better LCD TVs are claming. Keep on adding to the list of known things to look for/avoid or just general buying tips.
