Dell Inspiron M501R
$799.99
Released May, 2010
The Pros:Graphics processor can handle casual gaming and general multimedia. Larger than usual RAM ensures less file swapping with the hard drive, cuts down on wear and tear. Multitasking between processing-intensive applications works with barely any hesitation.
The Cons:Unsuitable for serious gaming, can't run anything at settings higher than "medium". Battery life is relatively short, needs to be recharged often. Can generate a fair amount of heat when running graphics-intensive applications.
The Inspiron M501R is one of few Dell notebooks with AMD processors. It is available with AMD Phenom II processors which were release to compete with Intel's Core i7 Quad core processors. It is also available with Integrated (ATI HD4250) and dedicated (ATI HD550v) graphics card options but with no switchable graphics unlike other more expensive notebooks.

The M501R offers a wide range of connectivity options including 3 USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA/USB combo port, wireless-N, 10/100 ethernet and Bluetooth. It comes with a 720p HD screen and Blu-Ray drive options along with HDMI out. The M501R is designed to be a low price portable media center with powerful components. Encoding HD videos and media stream over home WiFi network should be no problem for this notebook. At 5.83lbs it is lighter than many of it's competitions, and with 9 cell high capacity battery options, it can well be used as a budget student notebook.
