Dell Vostro 1400

The Dell Vostro 1400 is a value-priced laptop part of the Vostro lineup. With its Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, and featuring a 14.1" LCD display, while retailing for around $550, it provides a great deal of value for not that expensive of a price. I'm impressed by the Vostro lineup in general. There are some huge savings to be had on this lineup. They've got decent performance (Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM), are pretty small (inch and a half thick, five and a half pounds), and at a great price ($550).

I just purchased the Vostro 1400 a couple of days ago. I use it mostly for wifi access but also for dvd playing. All in all, a great machine for the money. But beware: You cannot play Netflix rentals using the media hardware/software Dell calls MediaDirect. Big drawback as far as I'm concerned. No sympathy from Dell. No fix as yet on the web. When something so simple is unavailable on a new machine, something is wrong. Hence, beware. Update (Feb 7,2007): finally found out how to fix the problem of not being able to play Netflix dvds.  It involved some fairly simple reconfig.
