When it was released, the 5805 was the cutting edge in every respect and remained that way through three upgrades. Denon's customer support was a step above as well in that they offered a way to upgrade the original model to the later versions (Mk. II and CI). However, I contacted Denon this week and learned that they will not be offering to upgrade the 5805 so that it incorporates HDMI 1.3a switching or decoding of any of the new HD surround formats. If you haven't made the investment, then wait until the end of the year and buy the AVR-5308CI which eliminates some features but improves ease of use and installation flexibility in addition to offering HDMI 1.3a switching/upconversion and decoding of HD surround formats.

I just want to say that the AVR-5805CI is THE BEST receiver Denon has EVER made! Yes the 5308CI has the newer formats, HDMI 1.3a, and some new features not present in the 5805. But as far as sound quality goes, this is THE BEST. It sounds FAR better than the 5308CI, and it's better built. I can say this because I have 2 5805's: the 5805CI and the 5805mkII (I didn't want to ship my mkII to upgrade so I just bought a CI lol) and the 5308CI.

The ONLY set that I have found that's actually BETTER than the 5805CI are the AVP/POA Separates, which I might get as well.

But the 5805 HANDS DOWN is THE BEST sounding receiver I have EVER heard!
