I do not have dial up internet anymore, it's high-speed!

About Me

I like Basketball, drumming, Halo 2, modded Xboxes, Popular Science when they don't have incredibly stupid articles, like the one about the 2017 workplace, and emulating the N64 with Project64. I also really want a 360, but have a lack of cash. I recently came across an iPod touch, which does have it's flaws, but is still a pretty good player.

I hate the PS1, PS2, and PS3, and Microsoft Windows on and off. And all other Microsoft Product's except Xboxes. And their mice. I like Microsoft Mice. But not their Microsoft Mouse software.

My Stuff

  • I recently started a blog, The World According to dialup. It's my take on various things, from life, to iPods, to other blogs. Expect more content soon.
  • I'm on Facebook. It's kind of a love/hate thing.I'll friend you if you can figure out what my real name is.
  • I have a StumbleUpon. If you've never heard of them before, you're living under a rock. Here's a link to my profile.
  • I'm also duiu_ on Last.fm. I'm into everything from Sufjan Stevens, to The Killers, to Led Zeppelin, to Eminem. I also highly recommend Vampire Weekend.
  • If for some reason you need to email me, it's dialupinternetuser at gmail dot com.
  • I've been meaning to get a FriendFeed. It's a pretty cool service. It aggregates (combines) all you activity on the internet.

A penny for your thoughts? MOD STUFF

2.  avatar Omar
I added the webclip icon to the site, check to see if it works with your iTouch.

3.  avatar Omar
I definitely agree that DTV Converters should be a category. As we get closer to Feb2009 a lot of people are going to need to know what the heck is going on, and what's best for them.

4.  avatar Erik
As for RAM, I have a whole bunch of A-DATA RAM and it's great:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211063

For PSU, I'd suggest buying a case that comes with a PSU. If you already have a case, I recommend getting a PSU that is 80 Plus certified (low power consumption, high-efficiency). Here's Newegg's cheapest:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817374005

It's fairly expensive, but you might end up saving that amount of money in electric bills.

5.  avatar Omar
Hey, if you're in the market for a 360 you should check out this deal that Microsoft and eBay are doing. I wrote up a thread for details (link).

6.  avatar yaminb
will do :)

7.  avatar Omar
That's awesome, it's unfortunate that it's limited to Vista users... and you have to use Windows Media Center. But for those that already have that setup, connecting it to your NetFlix is very sweet.

8.  avatar Erik
The embedded joke in your program. I was looking over his shoulder when I saw duiu+1 on Omar's console.

9.  avatar Erik
Genius, pure genius..

Hi and thanks for the welcome.

I'll make a point of showing up on the IRC channel at some point during the next few days, but when depends on how crazy work is. Also, I like to think of myself as a good person. People generally agree with that assessment. ;)

11.  avatar Erik
Haven't tried them yet, but I think I will soon. I'm thinking that a new HTPC + XBMC + Linux (or Windows) might eventually replace my Xbox + XBMC. The reason: HD!

I'll definitely post something when I do.

12.  avatar Erik
Your receiver question is answered. I didn't factor in IRC distraction time into my 5 mins. :)

13.  avatar Erik
That's a pretty good question. You're going to be hardpressed to find anything at that price that is any good. However, I'd say look to the Yamaha brand of receivers in their low-end and you might find something good. You may want to try on Craig's list to pick up something on the cheap as everyone is currently upgrading to HDMI-capable receivers. I'm on dialup right now, ironically, so I can't really do much research :( I'll do some more in-depth research on Monday when I'm back in the land of broadband.

14.  avatar Erik

Hey, sorry I missed you on IRC. I left the mIRC running at the end of the day. dakalvia added Vampire Weekend, coincidentally. I give you credit for pointing them out. I like them alot. :)

15.  avatar bigguy6882
Thanks for the advice. A reinstall worked once I stopped using the stable releases and jumped to the most recent release.

Thanks again.

So I softmodded my Xbox with no problems. Everything seems to work fine, FTP included. I downloaded XBMC from a recommended site and unrared all the folders out. Then FTP'd them over to the apps folder on my xbox.

Now the fun begins
I get the splash screen for the XBMC then I get a black screen with red lettering reading
XBMC Fatal Error:
No suitable skin version found.
We require at least version 2.0000

I have spent hours scouring forums and websites for even a reference to this problem. No real luck. Any ideas what is causing this issue for me? Any suggestions about what I can try to solve it?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

I've been wondering, how did you start learning how to play the drums?

18.  avatar murf633
Hi again,

I must have the worst XBOX in history (or it's me) I thought I needed to load both game saves (UDATA 1 & 2) for it to work. Anyway I tried with just the profile, which saves, but when I go into the game, it either friezies at the checkpoint screen (with a ghosting effect) or goes to a black screen with green writing in all different languages telling me to call customer support. This depends on which down load I use. I can't seem to get my hands on any of the other games so it looks like I am stuffed!
I honestly cannot think of anything else. Have you had anyone else from Australia with this problem? or has been successful? if so maybe they can shed some light.

I appreciate all your help, and if you have anything else that would be great

Murf

19.  avatar murf633
Thanks again for your help, BUT

I have downloaded about a dozen more versions of this folder for Splinter Cell ( even from Xbins) all with the same result. I can save the game profile but not the Linux Installer, it keeps saying "copy failed" on my xbox. I'm about to put my head through the nearest wall. At least I wouldn't be hurting a vital organ?

It's hard over here in Australia to get the old games now, not that that seems to be the issue anyway!

I've tried saving the otherones as well to see what would happen(Mech Assault and 007) and they don't save either? I am running dash 5960, and following the particular read me notes and/or tutorial, but I don't know it it is something I am doing wrong? It is on a network with my computer at the moment, though my computer cannot see it.

Any ideas once again

20.  avatar Omar
Good catch. It's gonzo.

21.  avatar murf633
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY,

i am trying MIRC but with the "xbins" screen I am not getting any password or anything, very frustrating :( I get the "you are now talking in" prompt, but there is no-one there?

I'll keep perservering

Hi There,

I am trying to mod my old xbox but having trouble with the Krazies program. I am in Australia so my xbox would be PAL (presumably!) I am using the original Splintercell game, so, I downloaded the original file complete, and it would let me install onto the xbox the "linux profile" backup, but kept telling me that the "install Linux" backup failed. I downloaded various copies of the Krazies PAL only program of Splintercell, only everyone of these has a corrupt file in it which happens to be in gamesave 2, the "install linux" backup.

Do you have any suggestions.

Murf

Thanks for the tip on the Android phones. Any word on whether or not this materialized? (I'm back from out of town where I was relegated to dialup)

24.  avatar Omar
Will do.. as soon as I get my 360 back. It's been at my friend's place (who doesn't have it connected) for the past couple of weeks. I plan on getting it back today :)

25.  avatar Erik
Thanks for the tip. I think I've got my next product to add :)

26.  avatar Erik
Ooh, how the tables have turned ;)

I'm desperately trying to figure out a way to get highspeed here at my family's house. Wireless Internet may be an option....

27.  avatar Erik
How the tables have turned!

Right now I have a Pulse 5 peice drumset with all the cymbals. As for how long I've been playing...mabey a month. I just got the set after saving up $350 and am learning how to use it. Once I get a little better I plan to get a Pearl 6 piece set.

29.  avatar silence omo7
I saw that. I was going to but never got around to it. I guess i forgot! Ill type something up later tonight if all goes well. Thanks for the reminder.

30.  avatar GT-D
Just got your message - been on exams past week. Not sure quite what I'd put in, but I'll mull it over.

31.  avatar Omar
awesome man, really glad you like it. And I don't know if you were being sarcastic about the "skin" :P We took design cues from Wikipedia and Facebook. Nothing wrong with being inspired by some of the biggest sites on the web right? They gotta be doing something right!

32.  avatar HK-47m4
This video is funny:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iYBmAVuBns

BTW if u hate MS then why do you want an Xbox 360?

33.  avatar Omar
Hey dialup, can you answer the question somebody had about playing Goldeneye on their computer? (from your article) And congrats on having more than 1000 people see the article, that's awesome!

34.  avatar Erik
Actually, yes, I am. How did you know? I saw your email, I'll give it a good look over and let you know soon.

35.  avatar Erik
Thanks for the tip. We'll look at including other contribution stats along with the product stats. I definitely appreciate the "complainers" ;). If all we get are compliments (and apathy) we won't know how to improve.

36.  avatar Omar
You can already do that with articles. You can actually do that with products right now as well, but it's pretty clunky and looks rough. I think the next update that we'll be putting out in the next few weeks will make you pretty happy!

37.  avatar Omar
Great suggestion. Our threads have all of those sorting features, so it's actually not that difficult to implement. I imagine it'll be in sooner rather than later.

38.  avatar Erik
We're set on 8.30P time, but Omar, Amanie, and I will be around at 3.45P at that chat room if you want to talk with us.

39.  avatar Erik
Funny about Chelsea. Actually, we're not too far away from you then. We're 3 hrs from Detroit (by car) in Waterloo, ON.

40.  avatar Erik
We realize that; we've been using the Manufacturer field for the Publisher, and Developer field for, uh, the developer. Good point, though.

41.  avatar Erik
I just read your profile. I see you're from Chelsea. I'm assuming Chelsea, England?

42.  avatar Erik
We've decided on 8.30pm EDT on Wednesday. Are you in North America? It's kind of confusing with the new daylight savings time here. It's 12:30AM in GMT (on Thursday technically).

43.  avatar Erik
The edit link has been restored.

44.  avatar Erik
Nope, that's our bad. Good catch. We'll fix that ASAP. In the meantime, you can edit it here: http://www.productwiki.com/user__dialupinternetuser/main/hub-state-2/

45.  avatar Amanie
That video had me cracking up for some reason.

46.  avatar Erik
Great article, duiu. Just another reason to look into Linux. btw, i'm on dialup this weekend too. :( it sucks big time!!!!
