The Canon PowerShot SX1 IS is a successor to 2007’s PowerShot S5IS. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX100V

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX100V is one of five 3D-compliant digital cameras released together in early 2011. In particular, It is the first Sony Cyber-shot camera to ever feature a 3.5” OLED XtraFine display with touchscreen functionality. It uses TruBlack te chnology to display deeper blacks and vibrant colors. Plus it supports a faster response time than a conventional LCD touchscreen. Also featured is a 16.2MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x optical zoom lens, and USB / SDHC / HDMI interface connectivity ports. Like its waterproof counterpart, the DSC-TX10, the Cyber-shot DSC-TX100V supports 3D still images and 1080/60i videos.

Additional Information

All five models (DSC-TX10, DSC-TX100V, DSC-HX7V, DSC-WX10, DSC-WX9) use a single lens and imager to produce 3D still images. They do this by taking two consecutive pictures in different focus positions. These images are then combined to create a 3D effect.

The Polaroid T737 is an ultra compact digital camera that falls smack dab in the middle of the super competitive budget line of cameras. Feature-wise this camera has all the standard buzzwords that one expects in this price range with no notable features missing. All of Polaroid's camera manufacturing is done in China, with many people counting their cameras as being inferior to other known names such as Canon and Nikon.

A 7 megapixel sensor headlines the feature specs with 3 times optical zoom, and image stabilization rounding out the list. It's unknown whether digital or the superior optical stabilization are used. An optical viewfinder is nowhere to be found as the large 3" LCD screen takes up most of the rear case's surface area.

Two video capture modes are available. An AVI capture mode films at a VGA resolution of 640x480 at 30fps. You can also film at a lower resolution of 320x240 at 30fps for reduced quality, but longer recording times due to reduced space consumption. 16MB of memory come standard, expandable with the SD memory card slot. An integrated Lithium-ion battery powers the camera.

GE's C1433 is an entry-level point-and-shoot digital camera with the lowest price point of GE's newly announced models, about $80. It replaces the previous base model, and the main improvement is the increased resolution, over 12 MP. This camera also has the GE panorama function, which stitches successive images together. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 is a point-and shoot digital camera released in early 2011 as a step down from the DMC-ZS10. It hosts the same 14.1MP MOS sensor and 24mm ultra-wide angle, 16x optical zoom lens, but it loses 3D compatibility and touchscreen functionality. Instead it relies on an intelligent 3” LCD display that automatically adjusts the brightness according to the shooting conditions. The biggest downgrade occurs with film capture, as it drops from 1080p to 720p HD. Despite the losses, the DMC-ZS8 has still impressed many reviewers due to its incorporation of auto scene calibrations, manual controls, and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card support. The latter allows users to watch their HD content on an SD-compatible HDTV.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is another of Panasonic's new crop of wide-angle digital cameras. With only 2.5x optical zoom, the DMC-LX3 is has the smallest zoom range of any Lumix wide-angle cameras. It seems that with the DMC-LX3 Panasonic's intention is to create a camera that does one thing really well, rather than many things decently. The CCD sensor is larger than most, but limited to 10.1 megapixels. This means that each individual pixel is larger, producing images one reviewer described as 40% more saturated than most digital images. The camera also offers a maximum aperture of f2.0 at 24mm.

Announced in 2006, the Sigma DP1 is a digital point and shoot sized camera with advanced DSLR specifications and functionality that has only recently begun shipping. The FujiFilm FinePix JX250 is one of four compact digital cameras (JV100, JX250, JZ300, JZ500) released in early 2010. The JX250 is the younger sibling to the JZ500. It hosts a weaker 5x wide-angle optical zoom lens, but it does feature its peer’s 2.7” LCD display, 14MP CCD sensor, and SD/SDHC memory expansion options. Signature to the JX250 is that it supports 720p video recording with monaural audio, as well as high-quality still shots up to 4288x3216 pixels. The FujiFilm FinePix HS10 is a fixed-lens point and shoot camera released in early 2010. Of FujiFilm’s Spring 2010 lineup, the HS10 is by far the best. For starters, it utilizes a powerful 30x optical zoom lens. It’s further bolstered by triple image stabilization (mechanical CMOS shift, digital stabilization, and ISO adjustment), a back-lit CMOS sensor optimized for low-light shooting, and support for RAW+JPEG still capture. Signature to the HS10 is its full support for 1080p high-definition video capture, not to mention an included HDMI v1.3 interface. Additional features include a 10fps burst mode, a movie mode that films up to 1000 frames per second, and a one-touch panorama mode.

Additional Information

The HS10 is lacking, however, with its weaker 10.3MP CCD sensor (when compared to its peers) and its reliance on conventional AA batteries. It is otherwise the best model in the Spring 2010 release.

Samsung ES55

The Samsung ES55 (SL102 in the US) is a 10.2 megapixel camera that is relatively inexpensive like its sister product, the Samsung ES15 (SL30 in the US), but also comes in a variety of color choices: black, silver, gray/blue, and pink. The most significant difference is that the ES55 has a LiIon battery, while the ES15 uses AA batteries, causing a slightly higher price for the ES55. Other than that, it has all the same features as its sister product, a 2.5" intelligent LCD viewing screen, beauty shot, face detection, movie mode, self portrait and an automatic sensitivity to poor lighting conditions. The Samsung ES55 does not have a signifcantly better zoom or feature collection than the cheaper Samsung ES15, except for the battery type.

The Canon SD780 IS is an ultra-slim point-and-shoot digital camera from Canon's Digital ELPH series and is a step down from the SD960 for 2009. Like the SD960, the camera features a 12.1 megapixel sensor, records HD video in 720p and has a mini-HDMI port to allow direct connection to an HDTV. It includes a DIGIC 4 Image Processor that delivers face detection technology and has a face detection self timer for taking self portraits and group shots. It was released at the same time as the VG-130 and VG-140 models, and has totally identical features with a .01" thinner body frame that includes some plastic regions, whereas the other models have full metal casings. The only other differences are in colour availability. Available in grey, silver and red, this camera has 720p video capture, a 14-megapixel sensor and 5x optical zoom. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W570 is a low-cost digital camera. This camera's 720p HD Movie Mode captures video in 1280 x 720 at 30fps. The Cyber-shot DSC-W570's Soft Skin mode recognizes skin tones and reduces the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles without affecting the rest of the shot. This camera's SteadyShot image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically shifts the lens to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality. The Cyber-shot DSC-W570's Natural Flash mode takes a reference shot without flash and then uses that reference to correct the color, for lifelike images. The lens of this camera is 25mm equivalent wide-angle, which allows for group shots in tight spots. The iAuto mode of the Cyber-shot DSC-W570 recognizes scenes, lighting conditions and faces, and adjusts settings accordingly. This camera differs from the lower cost Cyber-shot DSC-W560 model in that it has a 16.1 megapixel sensor (instead of 14.1 megapixels) and a 5x optical zoom (instead of 4x), though its LCD display is only 2.7 inches (the Cyber-shot DSC-W560's is three inches). Leica Digilux 3

The Leica Digilux 3 is one of Leica's professional digital cameras, released back in 2006. Since it isn't one of the newest on the market, its optical zoom and resolution are not the best on the market, despite the high price of the camera. The camera does come with some good features, such as an integral picture stabilizer that protects against camera shake even in harder lighting conditions. One of the nicest features of the Leica Digilux 3 is that it uses traditional operating controls, making it a great camera for consumers who like the setup of 35 mm cameras but want to transition to the picture quality and precision of an expensive digital camera. The camera uses a purely digital Leica mirror reflex system and has exchangeable lenses, something not normally found in digital cameras.
