The Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS is a colorful, ultra-thin compact digital camera announced in February 2010. The Leica Digilux 3 is one of Leica's professional digital cameras, released back in 2006. Since it isn't one of the newest on the market, its optical zoom and resolution are not the best on the market, despite the high price of the camera. The camera does come with some good features, such as an integral picture stabilizer that protects against camera shake even in harder lighting conditions. One of the nicest features of the Leica Digilux 3 is that it uses traditional operating controls, making it a great camera for consumers who like the setup of 35 mm cameras but want to transition to the picture quality and precision of an expensive digital camera. The DualView PL120 is the entry level offering in Samsung's 2011 line of digital cameras which feature an extra LCD display on the front of the camera for taking self portraits. Like the next model in this release called the PL170, the front screen is 1.5" whereas the top of the line ST700 has a 1.8" front screen. It also does not have HDMI output like the other two models and features a 14.2 megapixel sensor instead of 16.1 found in those cameras. All three however have a 26mm wide angle lens and 5x optical zoom, 720p HD movie recording capability and Smart 2.0 filters for image manipulation such as fish-eye, soft focus, half-tone dot, cinema, miniature, sketch and others. Easy Self Shot turns off the 2.7" LCD display on the back for added privacy when taking a self portrait, and you can select different picture frames to be added to an image with the Magic Frame feature. Smart Auto is another Samsung development which lets you choose from 16 different shooting modes for pictures and 4 for video that will automatically analyze and adjust brightness, color and motion for hands-free operation. Showcased at the January 2011 CES show, five cameras in total including the three DualView cameras are slated for a first quarter release.

Fujifim's FinePix F500EXR is a higher-end point-and-shoot model. Its main features include an upgraded CMOS sensor (over older Fujifilm models) , which improves noise reduction and contrast range, as well as allows for longer continuous shooting and high-definition video recording. Also, the new "EXR" processor is an improvement over older models in that it is more sensitive to different scene inputs, improving the auto-detect scene mode. The X500 is a forthcoming digital camera from General Imaging, to be released in February 2011. Its form factor is somewhat like a smaller SLR, and its main selling point is its relatively low price for its features, compared to competitors. These include a 16-megapixel sensor, 15x optical zoom, and 27mm wide-angle lens, as well as optical image stabilization. It allows manual control in different modes, like aperture and shutter priority. GE is marketing this camera as a "bridge" model, between entry-level point-and-shoots and SLR. It is in essence a duplicate to the XP30, except that it doesn’t offer GPS functionality. Featured is a 14.2MP CCD sensor, a 3.0” LCD display, and a 5x optical zoom lens. Designed to be used no matter what the environmental conditions, the XP20/XP22 can capture full HD stills and 720p videos, and then output it with monaural audio to NTSC/PAL devices. Unfortunately, the camera doesn’t support HDMI. It does however offer a USB port for PC connectivity, SD/SDHC/SDXC expansion for going beyond the limited 10MB onboard storage, and several photo functions—face detection, eye removal, etc.

Fujifilm's FinePix F550EXR is a higher-end point-and-shoot digital camera released concurrently with the similar F500EXR. The two fit a similar market niche in that they have a compact form factor with a long telephoto zoom, improved processors and CMOS sensors over older long-zoom Fujifilm models, and a breadth of scene selections and automatic detection features. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9 is one of five 3D-compliant digital cameras released together in early 2011. Unlike the DSC-WX10, it uses a 25mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 5x optical-zoom lens that’s better geared for group or landscape shots. In addition, it downgrades from 1080/60p to 1080/60i, though that’s still a fairly high resolution. Featured is a 16.2MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, a 3” LCD display, and support for 3D still-image capture. Since the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9 is especially designed for panorama shots, it hosts an iSweep Panorama function wherein the user merely pans the landscape and lets the camera do the rest.

Additional Information

All five models (DSC-TX10, DSC-TX100V, DSC-HX7V, DSC-WX10, DSC-WX9) use a single lens and imager to produce 3D still images. They do this by taking two consecutive pictures in different focus positions. These images are then combined to create a 3D effect.

The Lumix DMC-LX5 is a high-end point-and-shoot camera, set to be released sometime in late 2010. As the successor to Panasonic’s DMC-LX3 from 2008, this model offers incremental optical zoom and sensor upgrades over its predecessor.

The DMC-LX5 features a 10 megapixel CCD sensor, a 3.8x optical zoom and a 3-inch LCD display. While the image sensor and screen size are comparable to Panasonic’s DMC-LX3, the zoom has been marginally increased by 0.3x. The 24mm F-stop is set at F2.0, which is not as expansive as some competing cameras. The Fujifilm FinePix F505EXR is a digital camera released in the spring of 2011 along with two other models in the F series with similar features. These are compact cameras that are available in up to four color choices including red, black, silver or blue and all feature 16 mega pixel resolution, 15x optical zoom and a 3 inch LCD monitor on the back. Its LCD screen is a bit smaller than GE's standard 3-inches, and optical zoom is limited to 5x. Its MSRP is quite low at only 90 dollars, making this an updated GE value camera. Release is scheduled for March 2011, and it will be available in red, silver, and black. Sensor resolution is 14.1 megapixels. Its form factor is not as compact as the $110-120 GE camera range.

The FujiFilm FinePix F80EXR is an advanced point and shoot digital camera released in April 2010. It features a 12MP CCD sensor, a 10x wide-angle optical zoom lens, and a large 3.0” LCD display. It utilizes FujiFilm’s 3-Way Capture Technology, which utilizes 3-in-1 sensor system with Fine Capture Technology for a high resolution, Pixel Fusion Technology for high sensitivity and low noise, and Dual Capture Technology for a wide dynamic range. This allows it to capture 1080p still images, although it is unfortunately limited to 720p video. Do note, however, that the F80EXR, unlike many of its recently released peers, features an HDMI v1.4 port.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX10 is one of five 3D-compliant digital cameras released together in early 2011. It is the only unit in the series to support full 1080/60p high-resolution video capture. It also supports 3D still image capture and stereo audio capture. It also has a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar Lens like the DSC-WX9. However, the lens on the DSC-WX10’s lens is 7x, bright F.2 24mm wide-angle. This makes it more compatible for high-speed auto-focus shots. Additional features include a 3” LCD display, support for 3D panorama shots, and a Dual Record functionality for capturing videos and stills at the same time. The ST700 is a top of the line 16.1 megapixel DualView camera revealed at the 2011 CES show in Nevada along with two others and is touted by Samsung as their best DualView camera ever with the largest front screen as well. It features a 1.8" screen on front of the camera for taking self portraits, and a large 3" touch screen on back with Smart Access UI interface that operates similar to a smartphone menu. The Coolpix S3000 is the new generation S series announced by Nikon on February 3rd 2010 along with the Coolpix S4000. This is the successor to the S220, offering enhanced shooting functions, 12 mega-pixel resolution and a choice of seven colors. The monitor on the back is a 2.7" 230k-dot TFT LCD with anti-reflection coating and the internal memory is 47MB via the included SD card. Along with the S4000, it shares the same wide-angle 4x optical zoom NIKKOR lens, as well as an optimized image processing system based on Nikon's EXPEED technology for capturing highly detailed images. Casio Exilim EX-10HG

The Exilim EX-10HG, announced to be available from October 2010, is a digital camera that is Casio's attempt to break the mold on what a camera should be. Instead of just taking pictures, the camera is capable of figuring out its own location anywhere on the planet. Like the Exilim EX-H10, the Exilim EX-10HG is capable of geo-tagging, marking photos with their location, but unlike the older camera, this feature has been upgraded and modified so that it operates indoors and in congested areas. It works this way by using three-axis accelerometers and an orientation sensor which estimates the location based off of the last known point when a GPS location was still available. Though there aren't any reviews yet stating how accurate this feature is, no other cameras on the market or announced for the future claim this capability.

The PowerShot A490 is an entry-level point and shoot digital camera from Canon. Announced at CES 2010 in Las Vegas, this camera is the successor to Canon’s PowerShot A480. The updated A490 features a 10 megapixel image sensor, 3.3x optical zoom and face detection technology. These features enable clear, blur-free images to be taken by the average user. Those who don’t want to constantly adjust settings will likely make use of the Smart Auto with Scene Detection technology, which will apply the best settings automatically based on 11 different scene presets. Other notable features include a YouTube uploading tool in the supplied software package and SDHC/SDXC memory card compatibility. Photographs can be reviewed on the 2.5-inch LCD screen. The Canon PowerShot A490 will be released in February, 2010.

The Fujifilm FinePix Z900EXR/Z909EXR is a point-and-shoot digital camera. It resides in teh 2011 line up of Fujifilm's digital cameras. It features a touch screen and Fujifilm's new EXR CMOS digital image processing software that creates a better photo by removing noise and enhancing color. IT also has 27 different scene recognitions, including night, portrait, and Macro. The photos are also categorized by type on the device, which lets the user easily search through photos. Additionally, the camera will detect if a person is present in the photo and optimize exposure, white balance, focus, color, and tonality accordingly. The camera has three sensor modes for different situations: high resolution for well=lit conditions, high sensitivity low noise for night or dark conditions, and dynamic range for high-contrast conditions with sunlight and shadows. The camera is also capable of shooting 30fps 1080p video in the H.264 codec. Similar to video shooting, there is a 12fps auto-shoot mode that takes full resolution pictures automatically for shooting quick events such as sports.

The E1450W is a forthcoming, entry-level digital camera from GE, to be released in March and available in silver, red and black bodies. It has a rechargeable battery, 5x optical zoom, and a 28mm wide-angle lens. This model fits into the budget-level point-and-shoot range and aims to be slightly cheaper than similar competitor's models. Features like image stabilization and preset modes make it intuitive to use, and there is also a dedicated Panorama function. The body is cased in aluminum, and is thin and lightweight. One other key feature is HD video recording.
