RCA VR5320R

The RCA VR5320R / VR5330R are digital voice recorders designed to offer between 400 to 800 hours of recording space. As upgrades from the VR5220 / VR5230 models, these DVRs offer more user friendly controls, in addition to a larger storage capacity up to 2GB. Otherwise duplicates, they inherit the basic recording functionalities, including auto voice record upon the detection of sound, auto date/time stamping, and built-in editing functions. There is still one underlying caveat. Like its predecessors, the RCA VR5320R and its peer rely on the VOC format, which unfortunately isn’t compatible with either WMP or iTunes. That means users must first convert their files before they can play them.

The Olympus DM-420 is a hand-held digital voice recorder/music player with 2GB of internal memory and a Micro SD card slot which adds another 512MB - 16GB of removable memory. Both MP3 and WMA Stereo audio formats are supported with the highest MP3 quality setting of 44.1 kHz/320 kbps for a maximum recording time of 13 hours 45 minutes. However, various sample rates of either format may be used which can increase the recording time to a maximum of 533 hours. A voice activated record setting also increases maximum record time by recording only when sound is sensed and stopping again when it senses a period of silence, extending battery life in the process.

WAV files can be uploaded via USB and played although WAV format recording is not supported. A 3.5mm microphone jack for connecting an external mic is included as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack for private listening. The DM-420 comes with Olympus Sonority editing software which allows you to edit and manage recorded files and is also capable of Podcast management and downloading. The RCA VR5220 / VR 5230 are digital voice recorders designed to offer between 200 to 400 hours of recording space. Both utilize a sleek, portable design in addition to an integrated speaker, microphone, and headphone jack. More importantly, these DVRs offer voice-activated recording that immediately begins recording the second it detects sound. Also included is automatic date/time stamping, multiple playback speeds, and built-in editing functions. Note that all records are stored in the VOC format, which isn’t compatible with Windows Media Player or iTunes. Another problem are the non-intuitive user controls. The RCA VR5220 and its peer rely on multi-function buttons that must be pressed in different directions to toggle a specific function.

The Panasonic RR-US590 is a top-of-the-line 2GB MP3 voice recorder that connects to your computer via USB 2.0. Although the maximum recording capacity is 576 hours in mono/SLP speed, stereo recording/playback is also supported(albeit using more memory) as well as XP and LP speeds or 'modes' for even better quality. This is basically a modern version of the 'Dictaphone' so function takes president over form. Most people use these for journalism, to record lectures, and/or field location recording. A dedicated music folder is included which can store up to 999 files which in this and the next model is beneficial since Stereo playback is supported in these. Features common to the top three voice recorders that Panasonic has to offer are a USB 2.0 connection, 3X Zoom Mic, Voice-Activated System Functions, Playback EQ and MP3 support. The only major distinguishing factor between these is memory size(and the model below this one, RR-US550 is only mono). Audio recording is done through the built-in stereo microphone in high quality WMA (Windows Media Audio) at 44.1kHz for a total of almost 70 hours, while at the lowest rate 1088 hours may be recorded. A USB 2.0 connection is built into the unit so you don't need a cable just detach the side plate and plug it in. This kind of makes it double as a USB storage device since any type of file can be stored on it. System features include a 5 folder memory with up to 200 files per folder, the ability to set up to 16 index points in a piece of audio for quick referencing and also the feature of write protecting files so they don't get accidentally erased. MP3 playback is supported and 250 MP3 files may be loaded onto the unit from a computer, but recording is only done in WMA format with the available sample rates of 8 - 44.1kHz(18 - 277 hours). A voice activated record mode is also featured which makes for hands-free use by recording only when audio is detected, as well there is a large backlit LCD screen.

The Olympus WS-331M is a pocket-sized digital voice recorder/music player with high speed USB 2.0 connection built in and 2GB of internal flash memory. Audio is recorded in stereo WMA(Windows Media Audio) format through the stereo microphone and can be played back through the speaker or stereo headphone jack. All of the same features of the cheaper 1GB WS-321M can be found here including the ability to upload and play 250 MP3 files from a computer, high quality recording rates and a large easily readable white backlit LCD screen. There is also a voice recognizing record mode which will automatically record when sound is detected and stop when there is no sound, prolonging battery life and increasing available record time. The ability to pop off the side panel and stick it directly into a computer makes it also usable as a USB storage device since any type of file may be stored on it. The battery life is rated at 21 hours and is not rechargeable however only one AAA is needed to power it. Internally the WS-331M has many features including a low pass filter, voice filter, write protection of files, ability to place 16 index points along an audio file for quick reference and the usual MP3 player type functions like rewind and repeat.
