Behringer Eurolight LC2412

The Behringer Eurolight LC2412 is Behringer's first stab into the lighting industry, and packs powerful features into a small, inexpensive unit. The unit is in typical lighting board style, black and rectangular, with master and special controls to the right, and banks of faders to the left. There is also a 2 line back-lit LCD in the upper right corner of the console that displays utility dialogs and aids in programming. There is also a BNC socket for a 10 volt desk lamp compatible with the popular Littlight line of flexible lights.

The product is capable of controlling up to 24 channels of of a universe of DMX, so it can control 24 of any of these channels. The upper bank of 12 faders, located on the left side of the unit, always directly controls individual channels. The second twelve channels can be accessed by pressing the UPPER button. This is certianly a space and cost saving feature, but can be a pain since the faders are not motorized, especially when controlling lights "on the fly".

The second set of faders, on the bottom, are very useful for setting up a show very quickly. Each fader can be assigned a "scene"', or "memory" of a set of channel values, and the latter four faders can be assigned this OR chaser values. You can store up to 120 of these memories in 10 banks, selectable with a one digit LCD.

There is a master section with MASTER, BANK A (the upper bank), and BANK B (the lower) faders, and a BLACK OUT button. To the right of this is the chaser section. You can program up to 99 chases, as long as there is collectively less than 600 steps, or parts of the chase. Chases can be played back in three different modes: sound sensitive mode, manual tap mode, or set speed mode. You can set a cross-fade rate that determines smooth or choppy transitions between steps. You can also set the console into THEATRE MODE, where each step has a cross-fade rate between .1 seconds, and 10 seconds. This is quite useful in theatre, as you can set up a chase like a cue list, pressing the STEP button for each cue. You can scroll among steps quickly using the JOG WHEEL to the right of the LCD.

As far as ins and outs, the LC2412 is quite flexible, and has two ways of outputting lighting signals: Five pin DMX, and a 15 pin D-SUB connector for analog control. This means of output also includes two "special channels" that have their own dedicated buttons on the console. You can create custom control interfaces with this, including controlling a fog machine, mirror ball, or special effects light, even a tape player if you're really crafty.

There are MIDI IN and OUT connectors for creating custom interfaces, and for linking two consoles together to double the power. There is also an Audio IN jack (1/4 inch) and a foot pedal connector for tapping out beats for the chasers. On the console surface there is a PCMCIA slot for storing extra memory, and even doing a little hacking.

Numark NDX400

The Numark NDX400 is a tabletop MP3/CD player built to facilitate DJ mixing. This is similar to the Numark NDX200, but has additional features such as USB input for thumb drives of MP3s, reverse mode for unique effects, and scratch wheel performance on the large jog wheel. Three hot cues can be set at specific points throughout the tracks, allowing for quick returns to key points. The Numark MP102 is a single disc CD player built for permanent rack mounting. A number of features are included for professional DJs, including the ability to create seamless loops from both audio CDs and MP3 discs. Some features found in more advanced CD players, such as beat detection, are missing here however. Buffered Anti-Shock reads ahead in the track to allow for bumps without having the track skip. Buffering is also used to create instant starting of a track, and stutter start is also available with settable stutter points. The Vestax VCM-100 is a middle-end piece of DJ equipment. It features 60 assignable parameters, and included software. The user may assign up to sixty different parameters to the controller, giving them a large inventory of effects and functions to use. With a great amount of effects and functions, the DJs performance will be enhanced. Also, the user may select where each function goes, giving them the ability to create the perfect layout. The VCM-100 is bundled together with Traktor LE software, which eliminates the need to seek out any others MIDI software. The Traktor LE software even includes exclusive control assignment files, which make it so the user doesn't have to assign the initial functions themselves (though they can change it around later if they wish). When compared to another piece of DJ equipment from Vestax, the VCI-100, the VCM-100 loses out in some areas, including a lower number of assignable functions (60 versus 90), and support for ASIO 2.0, CoreAudio, and MME.

The Vestax VCM-600 is a high-end piece of DJ equipment. It features 160 parameters, and multi-track control.The 160 parameters of the controller allow the DJ to assign up to 160 functions and effects to the device, letting the DJ choose the layout of each effect themselves. 2 JOG WHEELS

Functions
- Emulate vinyl turntables so that turning the jog wheel moves the cursor backward or forward within music tracks to select the cue point where playback will start for the audience.
- Add effects to music playback such as instant speed up, instant slow down, and scratching.
Settings
- Adjustable resistance: makes the jog wheels more or less resistant, according to the DJ’s preference.
- Adjustable accuracy: mix with jog wheels set at their default accuracy, or divide it by 2 or 4.
Use with
- Scratch On/Off button: changes the jog wheels’ function
- - Fine tuning: slow down or speed up playback, like when a DJ gives a record a push.

6 FADERS (SLIDERS)

1 Cross fader
- DJ Console Rmx plays 1 stereo music track per deck (2 stereo music tracks simultaneously). The cross fader moves between the left and right decks, allowing the DJ to adjust the mix between the 2 tracks.
- - Setting the cross fader completely to the right means that the mix (the music the audience hears) comes 100% from the right deck: the audience doesn’t hear the music played on the left deck.
- - Setting the cross fader in the center means that the music comes 50% from the left deck and 50% from the right, and so on.
2 Pitch faders
- Change the pitch = change the playback speed of a track, increasing or reducing its BPM (Beats Per Minute) rate, in order to make dancing easy by setting new music tracks at the same BPM as the previous track so that dancers don’t need to change their rhythm during the transition from one track to another.
- Changing the pitch changes the music’s speed and tone: faster means higher tone, slower means lower tone. The DJ can keep the same tone by enabling the master tempo effect before changing the pitch so that the pitch slider only changes the tempo instead of the pitch.
3 Volume faders
- "Deck A volume fader" controls the volume of the music played on deck A.
- "Deck B volume fader" controls the volume of the music played on deck B.
- "Main volume fader" controls the master volume.
- Changing the volume on deck A or deck B lets the DJ adjust transitions between the 2 decks.

EQUALIZATION

6 rotary equalization potentiometers (3 per deck: Bass, Medium, and Treble)
- Add color to your music with customs settings:
- - Make dancing easier by enhancing the bass (the bass provides the tempo for dancing).
- - Remix songs by boosting the mids (the mids contain the singer’s voice) on 1 track and mixing it with another track on the other deck, where you’ve cut the mids.
- Make transitions between 2 music tracks using bass:
- - Synchronize the 2 tracks: move the pitch fader to set both tracks at the same BPM.
- - Cut off the mids and treble on both decks, keeping only the beat of the bass.
- - Move the cross fader from the first deck to the second, while restoring the mids and treble.
6 kill buttons (3 per deck: Bass, Medium, and Treble)
- Push the buttons to cut off or restore the frequency band.
- This is a faster way to cut off or restore a frequency band than using the rotary potentiometers.

GAIN

2 rotary gain potentiometers (1 per deck)
- Increase or decrease the level of the tracks on each deck to put the track played on left deck at the same volume as the track played on the right deck, even if they were recorded at different levels. Gain lets the DJ compensate for different levels between tracks so that the volume is the same on both tracks when the volume faders for both tracks are set to the maximum levels.
- When the DJ connects external sources to Deck A (left deck) or B (right deck), setting the gain makes it possible to compensate for differences in volume between external sources and computer audio files.

BALANCE

1 rotary balance potentiometer
- Sets the balance of the main output (1-2) between the left and the right channels.

HEADPHONE CONTROLS

1 rotary Monitor Select potentiometer
- The Monitor Select potentiometer lets the DJ select the music played on the headphone output, either:
- - Previewing (the track selected with the Cue Select buttons), or Deck A + Deck B,
- - Or a mix of the 2 tracks, when the Monitor Select position is between these 2 settings.

Enabling an external audio source requires adjusting the gain control for the deck in question.

PITCH SETTINGS

6 buttons (3 per deck) in addition to the pitch faders
Pitch Reset (1 button per deck):
- Gradually resets the pitch of the music to the original pitch, whatever the pitch fader position.
Beat Lock (1 button per deck)
- In VirtualDJ 5 DJC Edition, this button switches the Master Tempo on/off. Master Tempo locks the music to its current tone, allowing the DJ to change the tempo without changing the tone.
Sync (1 button per deck) = Synchronization
- Pushing the Sync button on a deck adjusts the speed (BPM) of the music played on the deck to the same speed (BPM) as the music played on the other deck.

PLAY/PAUSE, CUE AND STOP

- Play starts the music playback, pause stops it at its current position in the track.
- Cue places a cue point (a marker where playback should start) at the current position in the track.

The Pioneer SEP-C1 is a professional-grade entertainment controller, featuring the industry's first OEL display. This device was created in response to the growing prominence of laptop usage in the DJ community, and includes Pioneer’s DJS all-in-one DJ software application, for playback from a Windows-based computer. One of DJS' functions is Auto Mix, which automatically mixes playback of the tracks registered on your play list. There are eight effects in the DJS program, which can be synchronized with the music tempo. The touch-sensitive jog wheel of the SEP-C1 allows you to control volume on the fly. The Vestax Spin is a hardware interface for the djay3.0 software. This software runs on a Macintosh computer only, and is not compatible with a PC. 2-channel mixing with 3-band per channel EQ allows for mixing of digital music files. Tracks can be cued up using a headphone output, and the mix can be recorded on the fly. Functions such as beat matching, looping, and various audio effects are all supported by the software. An included microphone allows for the blending of voice input, and a pitch shift knob is set aside to alter the user's voice. The Numark iDJ3 is an iPod dock that enables mixing, recording and playing sets with digital media.
