Donnie Darko

This new and embellished version of the 2001 theatrical release, which was a cult hit, offers twenty minutes of scenes that were deleted from the original, sound improvements, new songs (such as "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS), and new special effects that give insight into Donnie's world and his theories of time travel. Writer-director Richard Kelly's bold debut film is a social satire, a dark comedy, a science fiction time-traveling fantasy, and a suburban nightmare about an extremely intelligent, depressive, self-destructive, narcoleptic, gun-toting, sex-crazed, teenaged arsonist: Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal).

Donnie Darko is one of my favourite movies. I finally watched the director's cut, and I was actually disappointed...the theatrical version is a much better edit. The director's cut (as for most director's cuts) was too long and drawn out, definitely in need of some edditing. The extra scenes were pretty much pointless. The film moves way slower than the theatrical version, and the different soundtrack is not as good as the original....not even close. The only thing I liked was the addition of the scenes with the close-ups on the eye....pretty cool....remisniscent of 2001 a Space Odyssey.
