I am the author of Hiding in Water: A Memoir Based Mostly in Reality and the founder of Brain Trust Books. At this point, Brain Trust Books is basically one person...me. I wanted a forum to be able to publish my book and maintain all of my rights. With the average publishing advance at $5,000 and the average first print run at 3,000 books, I didn't see a huge advantage to going with a typical publisher. Add in the fact that most publishers don't put a big marketing push behind a first-time author (and consequently about half of those 3,000 books can end up getting pulped) it was an easy choice for me.
I have put together 258 guerilla marketing techniques that I am employing for my book. It's a lot of work, but I want to be able to look back on this experience and know that I did everything I could to make my book a success.
If I can actually make a living as a writer, I will eventually open up Brain Trust Books to other authors as well. For now, please wish me luck! (Oh, and maybe buy a copy of the book, too.)
dowrite: I forgot the closed parenthesis at the end of the final sentence. Ooops. So much for being a writer. Jan 23, 13
