Is wine tasting the most pretentious thing in the world?

In the grand scheme of things pretentiousness doesn't really matter much, and there are a lot worse things in the world, BUT wine tasting definitely has to be among the top of the class. I was listening to the radio yesterday and this guy phoned in asking about a wine, and what ensued was the most ingratiating 5 minutes of BS I've ever heard in my life! Going on about the ripeness, and SOUL of the thing. It's a friggin liquid!

Now, I'll admit it straight up, I don't drink. So obviously I'm looking across a huge gap as I come up with these sweeping judgements, but seriously, it was just ridiculous. And some people might say that wine tasting is about enjoying the finer things in life and about taste. But I counter that developing such a ridiculously sensitive palette actually makes you enjoy food less. I have no doubt that people can tell the difference between a "bad" year and a "good" year, but I'm also sure there are a lot more bad years than good, meaning it's really friggin tough for them to find something they'll like. Then you get into the vicious cycle of constantly more expensive tastes.

I just don't get it. I get the conspicuous consumption/status of it all, but man... keep me out of it!

Other pretentious things include Mensa membership, and hemp clothing.
