Is wine tasting the most pretentious thing in the world?

In the grand scheme of things pretentiousness doesn't really matter much, and there are a lot worse things in the world, BUT wine tasting definitely has to be among the top of the class. I was listening to the radio yesterday and this guy phoned in asking about a wine, and what ensued was the most ingratiating 5 minutes of BS I've ever heard in my life! Going on about the ripeness, and SOUL of the thing. It's a friggin liquid!

Now, I'll admit it straight up, I don't drink. So obviously I'm looking across a huge gap as I come up with these sweeping judgements, but seriously, it was just ridiculous. And some people might say that wine tasting is about enjoying the finer things in life and about taste. But I counter that developing such a ridiculously sensitive palette actually makes you enjoy food less. I have no doubt that people can tell the difference between a "bad" year and a "good" year, but I'm also sure there are a lot more bad years than good, meaning it's really friggin tough for them to find something they'll like. Then you get into the vicious cycle of constantly more expensive tastes.

I just don't get it. I get the conspicuous consumption/status of it all, but man... keep me out of it!

Other pretentious things include Mensa membership, and hemp clothing.

I'll agree that it can be somewhat pretentious Omar, and most people probably have no idea what they're talking about.  For me, I find interesting the process involved in making wine, and how there are numerous variables that affect the final outcome.  I know you won't, but you should take a tour of a winery someday and see everything that goes into making the wine... you might find it interesting.

I'll just wait for the wine making episode on How its made. :P

I don't doubt you that it's interesting though. But if I hear you talking about the SOUL of the wine next time we hang out, that'll be the last time.

I cannot drink coffee, too bitter. Tea all the way. Unless there's mountain dew. Or vanialla coke. And no I'm not able to legally drink. So I've never had wine. But I do agree with you Omar. I never understood why you would go to wine tasting parties.

No, wine tasting is not pretentious.  People follow sporting events and go to food tastings, why not a wine tasting?  Seems just as pleasant and you can still enjoy the company of other people jsut like at a restaurant.  With the added bonus of being able to spit on occasion.
