I'm Erik Kalviainen, one of the founders of ProductWiki. I'm 29 (as of Oct. 20th), Canadian, and graduated from the University of Waterloo in Systems Design Engineering in 2002. I'm a self-professed consumer maven (hence the website), and I have a lot of interests outside of the Internet including soccer, music, movies, space, math, and reality tv.

Stop by the IRC channel and say hello!

on the web

I am very/somewhat/slightly active on many of the newer social websites. Here's a link to my accounts on these sites (in order of preference):

  1. del.icio.us - ekalvi - digg gets more attention but del.icio.us has captured my heart
  2. StumbleUpon - ekalvi - originally a fellow Canadian company. A great way to find cool stuff (and waste time)
  3. digg - ekkalvia - slightly obsessed with Linux/Ubuntu/AJAX but good nonetheless. Great design
  4. LinkedIn - ekalvi - great site for business stuff. I always promise to use it more, but fail to do so.
  5. Twitter - ekalvi - Yes, I have Twitter. It's a love/hate thing.

I purposely left FaceBook off of the list, because I find it pretty annoying because provides very little value while wasting a hell of a lot of time. I've aggregated my social web on FriendFeed here: http://friendfeed.com/ekalvi. It's a pretty cool service, I suggest trying them out. (You can even add your ProductWiki taps to the feed by putting in the URL of your lists tab).

Many thanks for your welcome to the site, Erik. And congratulations to you, Omar and the rest of the hard-working and knowledgeable folks who make it awesome!

I'm in the market for a Samsung or Sony HDTV 1080p by Xmas time, so I'm trying to keep up with the latest developments. This revamped "LED backlight" technology seems to be very promising, and might even change the LCD/Plasma standards as we now know them... don't you think?

"yeah i get that! i meant to say, that because i dont have any products there it shows an error message of "We could not find a feed tag in the given page. Please enter the RSS or Atom feed url instead.""... instead i use my rss feed form my product page!

Ubuntu is better supported and works better if you know how to use it. It also lets you change more settings.

We got all the parts! 2 1 TB HDD's at Best Buy, on sale for $170 each. That $50 mobo we found, that A-DATA RAM you recommended, a nice power supply that's 550W and cheap ($60 after rebate) as well as 80+ Certified, that $25 processors that you found (1.9ghz AMD Semperon w/ heat sink and fan), and a gigabit card to future proof it. I added the HDD's to the site, and hopefully will get to the rest soon. Everything but the HDD's we got a Newegg.

Thanks for the advice, we were thinking a power supply around 500 watt so it could power many things if the server ends up being large, I found one of those 80-clear or whatever they're called for $60 and 550W.

As for RAM, we need PC1066, 240 pin and were thinking 2GB. A-DATA only has a two pack of 2 GB for $120, but the only other 2GB DDR2 PC1066 was by some other brand and still $67.

I'd love to make it, but I will be in a meeting at that time, with no way to reschedule (work-related, not hobby :]) Thank you for thinking of me and thanks especially for the vote of confidence that your invite seems to indicate.

OK, unfortunately the ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI did not suite my gaming needs
for one, it will not take the 125Watt Phenoms or Athlon X2 such as the
9700, 9850 phenoms and the AMD 6400+.
It will take the 6000+ and lower.

The situation is bad in that an invalid combination will cause the
board to blow up so do not make that mistake.

In terms of the graphics performance, I can't say because I did not get it working the way I wanted to. (but got it working after a few trials and errors).

I ended up using my old 7600 GT. Gaming is not what it was on my CrossHair.
I do C++ programming on this system - gaming is secondary so it is suiting that part of my needs.

Finally the RAM at 1066 will not work unless it was designed for the board and CPU.
And the graphics will take away from your RAM.

However,
1. It is stable - no lockup or reboot issues since I installed it (1 week now). (XP SP2/AMD 6000+/3x1 Gigs 800 Mhz RAM)

2. It has a built in serial port for legacy applications like cash register / external modem / PABX interfaces. (However you will need to buy the cable to bring it out of the Motherboard

3. Has no parallel port externally - need to get a cable to bring it out externally.

4. Can do low power stand by (use this all the time)

5. Remember this is Micro ATX form factor i.e. smaller motherboard - so be careful of the case you get for it.

6. The built in VGA is good, probably for business so no need to buy a graphics card (gaming however is another story).

7. Has enough SATA ports and can do RAID1 so maybe you can make a cheap file server/NAS or something.

8. Giggy LAN, 8 port audio built in, plenty USB ports. Also, I had an external USB Hard Disk that did not want to work with my CrossHair (which I crashed - permanently!!!)
but the ones on this MOBO works with my external USB H.D fine. The problem was the power in my old system was not enough to power the ext U.S.B. H.D. There is a jumper for this...

Erik, this is not a high performing MOBO, it is ok for the office but not for general home/gaming use.

I am just really sad that I flashed my CrossHair MOBO and disabled it permanently (*sob, *sob)
glad if I was any help......

From what I've seen, people who have a pair of Vibrams love them. Not everyone can pull it off, though. :) Do you run with them as well?

I sure love mine! Can't wait to get another, more suitable pair (I have the neoprene ones). I am not much of a runner - I don't go out just to run but I do run around in my FiveFingers, sprinting, jogging, hopping and skipping, or whatever feels good at the time. ;) Because your gait is totally changed to a more natural, "fox walking" short step, it often feels better to run in them, for sure, so I can see how so many people become addicted to moving faster in them. I basically wear mine whenever I am going where I know I won't be on pavement much: walking to work, going for hikes, or working out in the yard. I have had mine for every season BUT summer so I will be putting them to the real test from now til the snow flies.

Yeah, when I took a min-course on C++ a couple years ago we had to make this calculator program (more advanced than this one) and I had a ton of easter eggs in it. If you entered "42" at most of the menu's, random stuff would show up. Anything from random trivia to a list of my favorite bands, or insults. Or hints for more tricks.

What's genius?

rob Btw, you probably learned how to be a better engineer by training on equipment I used to sell. I sold undergrad training equipment to university for things like ee,me, ce, ae and other forms of engineering. Closed loop control, hydro benches , telecomms equipment etc. Before that was a systems engineer in Gps industry - smart transportation. Prior to that a navy submariner. Maybe you can put your degree to use one day as well. Best of luck with the new site. It has potential.

I bought the PS3 in 2006 based on the inclusion of the Blu-ray player. At the time a separate Blu-ray player was about $800. Luck was with me, given the demise of HD-DVD and the timely PS3 firmware updates.

I believe Sony is able to market the STR-DG720 at the low price point in part because they have eliminated the S-video jacks and video up-conversion feature. neither of these features are useful to me.

Regarding the new Onkyo AV receivers: I believe they are equipped with HDMI v1.2 (TX-SR576) I prefer HDMI v 1.3a,b See the difference in the table at the bottom of this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#HDMI_1.2

I saw the new pro on XBMC, have you tried any of the ports yet? I saw compile, DirectX, OpenGL, and figured it was too much work and there was no way my computer could run it. Apparently the Mac port is pretty good according to Lifehacker.

I'm assuming you sent it as Erik Kalviainen with the number 80025 14646 meaning something to you, either a zip code or tracking number. I did get what was meant for me?

25.  avatar postulio
thanks so much for your reply, i too will monitor these events and if i find some concrete info ill add it here. thanks again! this site is really great

Sweet. I don't know much about receivers, so your help is appreciated. Let me know if you find any cheap HDMI ones as well.

Do you know of a cheap ($100 or lower) stereo receiver that I can use with two speakers, but possibly upgrade to Dolby 5.1 eventually, that has plugs for CD, TV, DVD, etc. and has an AM/FM tuner?

28.  avatar mcbit
That is very cool! Great job!

Hey thanks for the welcome, i absolutely love the site! I've learned my lesson not to copy and paste the commercial description of the games, won't do it again and I'd love to help out as much as possible by adding more stuff :)

ekup! How much do you know about Vista Home Basic vs. Home Premium vs. XP Pro? We just got my mother a new computer and she doesn't know yet. My Dad and I are trying to figure out whether we should leave it on Home Basic and "down/upgrade" to XP Pro? We have a SMB network in our house and have some kinda advanced settings (passwords and the like), along with a Wireless Network. All our other PC's are running XP (except for one we're probably getting rid of or turning into a RAID that currently has Win2K.) Any suggestions or info? So far I've just looked at the wikipedia article on the versions. I'd like to try to get this resolved before the weekend.

37.  avatar jtoeman
Thanks! I like the concept - I think you are on to something, and I hope it works out for you! Next step - build that community, make some money! :)

Its all common sense really.

A MiniDV camcorder compresses a standard definition video into about 35Mbps. That's about 3 times more than the HD1000 has to play with for compressing 1080i video (12Mbps)! So, the more motion there is, the more obvious the compression. Putting the camera on the tripod (or just not moving it much) eliminates a lot of motion and lets the compression concentrate on picture quality . :)

As for most people, I am afraid quality isn't really what most people worry about. Dominance of technologies like VHS and Windows is a testimony to that. :)

More Android for you. http://www.macworld.com/article/132012/2008/02/android.html

The moderators guide was really useful.
*hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to work I go*

So I take it not many people were at the meeting? Sorry I missed it. And what was the song that was in the video you made for the Crunchies?

I'm duiu on XBL, but it's on my friend's Xbox 360 so I don't play very often. I'm also duiu on XLink Kai, but because my wireless card does not support promiscuous mode, I cannot play without tons of lag and random losses of connection. It kinda sucks. If I move my Xbox and plug it in it works, but that's annoying so I don't do it often.

re: iPAQ naming. It seems as if the "Handheld" is used by HP as part of the product's official name rather than as a descriptor for what the product is.

Also, can different categories of Product Properties be added to a product category?
Such as adding CPU Speed, RAM, Storage and OS to the PDA category?

re: NDS flashcarts. When I marked that I prefer the CycloDS Evolution over the M3 DS Real I was thinking the M3 was the same old M3 DS Simply. After a very quick look at the M3 it looks very comparable to the Evo I have, but with a couple extras that look pretty nice. The Real looks like it has a better config and customization of the Cheats and also has the ability to easily keep multiple save files per game. With my Evo I can do that, but I have to manually rename the files.

I think I will be changing that vote in favor of the Real.

Not a problem, I played with one at FrOSCon this year, a company called Tarent brought along some Nokia 770's, some N800's, a couple of FIC Neo1973's (OpenMoko phones) and an iLiad. I played with all of them for hours and really liked them. The New1973 is still a bit rough around the edges (I crashed X on it several times) but the Nokia's were very nice, as was the iLiad.

The application these guys were demonstrating was a Java thing which was aimed at middle management, each member at a meeting would have a device with their software on it (770, N800, Neo1973 or iLiad) and any changes that were made to the document (PDF, text, MS-doc I believe), whether it was a handwritten note, an edit to the text or adding some addition text, was pushed out to all the other devices in real time. I believe all the edits were archived in an SVN style manner on a server for later retrieval too.

Their Java app required three things, WiFi, a touchscreen and an open platform. As it was an FLOSS conference all four devices they showed ran on Linux kernels (which really pleased the crowd).

One of the things I liked about Tarent (http://www.tarent.de) was that they would tell us (the conference attendees) anything we wanted to know about their application, and the let us play with the devices as much as we wanted. As such I grabbed an N800 for a few hours, installed a shell on it and ssh'd into my server to chat with my friends (connecting to irssi in a screen session).

The Tarent guys had no problem with this, I assume they knew that these things were going to be hacked to bits and decided to not try and stop it, but just to commit to some factory resets after the conference.

Anyway, thanks for checking out my blog too, :)

Thanks for the positive comments. I'm flattered that you've decided to make me a featured user. More than simply being a fan of the Humax Tivo DVR's, I'm a fan of Tivo in general. Honestly, Tivo in specific, and the DVR concept in general has completely changed the way I watch TV. I'd always felt that, since I pay for cable and will continue to do so, I shouldn't have to suffer watching through commercials. DVR's and Tivo in particular enable me to watch what I want, discover new shows, and completely avoid suffering commercials. Evidence of my devotion to the concept of the DVR can be observed by looking at my AV cabinet. I've got the Humax DVR, a Comcast Digital Cable DVR, and an HTPC which I built and which has over 1 TB of storage.

61.  avatar heapatrouble
Yes. Then Onkyo TX-NR1000 uses a modular card-cage architecture similar to that employed by a PC. Theoretically, this should allow nearly limitless upgrades, but as I said, I haven't seen an announcement for HDMI 1.3a and HD Surround decoding for it. Also, if you check the Denon website (http://usa.denon.com/ProductUpdatesUpgrades.asp), you can see that upgrades have been offered for both the AVR-5805 and AVR-4806. No other manufacturers of which I am aware have offered this level of customer support.

62.  avatar heapatrouble
Thanks for the positive feedback. I know what you mean. It's almost as though the manufacturers consider something costing less than a couple grand to be a disposable commodity. Of all the receiver manufacturers, only Denon and Onkyo have seemed committed to supporting a particular product after its initial release - and that only for the flagship models. Unfortunately, Denon will no longer support upgrades for the 48xx and 58xx series and I have yet to see an upgrade announced for the Onkyon's TX-NR1000 which they touted as the only receiver made which will not become obsolete. If Onkyo made an upgrade for the 1000 that incorporated 6 HDMI 1.3 inputs, Realta video processing and HD surround audio processing, that would be a no-brainer for me as it would have all the features I'm looking for and demonstrate their continued commitment to customer support for several generations of technology.

Thanks, Eric! I appreciate your stoke. It's a lot of work running this show on my own and doing the right thing. It's nice to hear people enjoy it.

I can't figure out why the page was pointing to another product from TRENDSETTERS in the buy section (and telling people it's a much lower price there), but it got deleted after I posted the first comment. I can't review my own product, obviously, but I wanted people to know I am not affiliated with TRENDSETTERS. It looked like someone was using my product to drive traffic to their site?

re FeedGhost: Yes I am a co-creator of that product; hopefully my brief write-up wasn't too biased. I've described the version which will be out on Friday 25th July (I did set a release date on that product page), so the version you download won't have prioritization and filtering in. Ugg - I was planning to but they never got back to me about my request for student pricing since I'm still in university (well technically - got a few credits to finish up next year)... so I suppose I'll just have to wait for the next one.

Hmm - good question. I'm pretty sure it showed up as a backlink for one of our competitors sites or something like that. I'm not exactly sure though... I had also been generally looking up social shopping engines recently too

You are probably thinking of Sierra Wireless, which is quite popular with Wifi chips and related consumer products. PMC-Sierra is another company that is designing mostly chips: for Wireline networking, NAS, MIPS processors, VoIP and VDSL Both of them are located in Vancouver.

In my final essay I tackled the analytic - synthetic distinction, comparing Ayer's position in "Language Truth and Logic" to Quine's "Two Dogmas of Empiriscism" and finally Putnam's "The Analytic and the Synthetic". Came to the conclusion that, as appealing (in a sort of romantic way even) as empiricism is, it isn't a sound theory when considering Quine's position, and that Putnam, for all the good the rebuttal to Quine does, doesn't really support empiricism still. Rationalism really seems to have taken over as the dominant paradigm with good reason. - though I could certainly be kind of off in this judgment, I've only done a bit on philosophy of logic, math and science... have been vacillating about what part of philosophy to focus on or whether I want to do Asian studies more as I find politics, social science and history really interesting too.

Hey, yeah the apprentice last year was a great for greentea, the kitchen looked amazing. I (as a person, not just as a representative on greentea design) am pretty interested in math stuff to somewhat interested in math stuff as well. I just completed my fourth year at York University here in Toronto doing philosophy and asian studies. The course I did for finishing up my major in philosophy was The Rise and Fall of Logical Positivism. So took a really in depth look at a variety of concepts that were quite interesting; did lots of Bertrand Russell, Frege, A. J. Ayer, Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and so on. Don't know if this is quite the area of math you're interested in but figured I'd mention since I saw it in your profile.

I can't figure out why this is not all over the news. They started out focussing on replacing acetelene and are now just getting into cars.

i just posted a discussion topic, yet i can't get the font to look right, it's all funky. Can you help me fix it

Your Product Maven article is excellent. Thanks for including my opinions. Also, I just wanted to let you know I wrote a brief review about product wiki on my blog. You can read it here. As you can see I am very biased in my review :)

Erick check your productwiki email. And I take it your into fractals?

Cdogstar says: YOUR REALLY INTO IT,IVE GOT ALOT OF CATCHING UP TO DO.

You know on the side of the user page it tells you how many products you added and what percentage was featured? I was looking and mine and it is 5:1, however I was still featured. Now, if I were a person just looking at the site, I would see people like you, Omar, and Silence Omo who have added a ton of products. I'd be like, WTF why is this person featured? He hasn't done anything. But what I have done is write several widely read articles. You may want to consider adding that to the side of every user page, also. And you could also consider me your official "I found a minor error and trivial thing on the site and decided I complain about it" person. Butt you'll thank me in the end. (I do this to videogames also ;))

79.  avatar Infomaniac
Thanks Erik. I really, really like your site. I plan on writing a review on my blog soon to let my readers know what they are missing. I can't believe I'm a power user! I won't let you done.

Your site is way too easy to use! I'm having fun today, all play -- no work. BTW, I love Clicky for webanalytics. I use Google Analytics as well but find Clicky is easier to work with for basic site statistics and information on site visitors. I'm still using the free version but may pay the small yearly amount to get all of the features.

Hey Erik, I wasn't able to get on, but the next time you guys have a meet in the evening I'll do my best to be there :)

Ill probably be there at 3:45

'll try. If you move it to about 3:45 I could definitely be there.

I know this is kind of picky, but on your video game product info table thingy on the side, all you have there is developer. Sometimes the developer is wrong, because you did not also include publisher. The developer is the people who make the game, and the publisher is those who sell it. For example the Halo developer is Bungie, but the publisher is Microsoft Game Studios. LucasArts is a publisher, not a developer also.

what time one Wednesday is the meeting

Thanks Erik, I lve it. This is my 5th SUV (had a 1997 LR Discovery, 2000 LR Discovery, 2002 Lexus RX300, and 2005 Lexus RX330) and to tell you the truth, the RX's were probably the most comfortable of the rest, the the FJ surpasses in maneuverability, style, customizability, and overall happiness that the vehicle gives. It's totally worth the upgrade for the TRD, but good luck finding one. I got lucky and got the only one up here in NYC.

hey erik -- very cool site -- if it isn't already, i bet it really takes off.

88.  avatar ogorman
Hi Erik We are open to the options, so lets discuss over the coming days/weeks Thanks niall

89.  avatar ogorman
Hi Erik, so in a perfect world in order to seed the products what can I add without over stepping the community focus?

90.  avatar silence omo7

Now I know. Thanks, I'll start doing that more often with certain products (like screenshots of games or whatever).

91.  avatar silence omo7
Can you remove the images of the band from the Mezmerize and Hypnotize products? Or at least make it so they aren't the main image. Or you could tell me how to do it. Thx.

92.  avatar KD1964
Hi I uploaded too many photos in the image gallery and I want to delete all of them because they are not the ones I want...how can I delete them?

93.  avatar joicey
hello, i find the search function doesn't find the aim too correct.

94.  avatar k4lnamja
hey, have you found the adidas rowing shoe yet in black/white or white/blue? if so, please email me at k4lnamja1@yahoo.com. I would be very appreciative

95.  avatar silence omo7

Ya, the text and buttons are big enough that your don't have to zoom. It works great.
