The LaCie CloudBox is a network backup device as well as a cloud storage service. The CloudBox has a single LAN port for connection with your network router. The software allows for automatic back up between three areas: computers on your network, the CloudBox itself, and an online backup. The CloudBox has 100GB of physical storage as do the online service. Any data that is backed up in the CloudBox will also be uploaded to the online cloud service as a second backup. All data that is uploaded to the online service is first encrypted with 128-bit AES encryption. The LaCie CloudBox is an innovative multi-layer backup solution; users will be able to restore content from either the physical drive or from the cloud service. The LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt SSD is an external solid state hard disk drive featuring the latest Thunderbolt protocol connectivity allowing for data transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s. Inside the drive are two 120 Gigabyte SSD drives that are configured in RAID 0 formation, which stripes duplicate data onto each drive, ensuring a backup of all data stored on the first drive. 120GB is the maximum usable capacity in this data protective formation, but the drive may also be used in RAID 1 which does not duplicate data and effectively turns both drives into one 240GB drive. LaCie also offers 1TB and 2TB versions using traditional 7200/5400 rpm drives as well if solid state is not a must and storage capacity is, while still touting the same 10Gb/s speeds. Daisy chaining is supported allowing multiple Thunderbolt devices to be used simultaneously which increases overall performance, and the benefit of this new technology is that the cable has two channels, each with 10Gb/s bandwidth, with one transferring video and the other audio. This makes it usable in high end audio/video editing applications, and since both streams can be pushed/pulled at the same time, reading and writing can be performed together without a drop in performance.

The C2 Rugged is able to do that thanks to the exterior rubber sleeve and the inner shock absorbers. The FreeAgent GoFlex Desk is a desktop hard drive from Seagate, released in mid-2010. This product is compatible with USB 3.0 and FireWire 800 connections through separately purchased adapters. USB 2.0 comes standard with the GoFlex Desk. The faster interface options are ideal for large files, such as HD movies. This drive includes Seagate’s “Dashboard” applications, a software suite designed for automatic backup and file encryption. This hard drive is compatible with both PC and Mac computers, however those using OS X must reformat the drive to HFS+ for use with the included backup software or Apple’s Time Machine program. The Verbatim Store 'n' Go SuperSpeed USB 3.0 is a portable hard drive available in 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB capacities. Released as Verbatim’s first-ever USB 3.0 compliant flash drive, the SuperSpeed offers data transfer speeds 10x faster than conventional USB 2.0, though it is still backwards compatible with both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 standards. Keep in mind however that the USB 3.0 throughput is not supported when dealing with such legacy interfaces. Users say the Store 'n' Go SuperSpeed USB 3.0 is fast, which of course is aided further by the Samsung Spinpoint M7 HM500JI drive within. However, it dust easily collect dust. In addition, the actual throughput is more like 85MB/s (versus 22MB/s for USB 2.0), versus the theoretical 600MB/s claimed.

Both devices are marketed as HDDs made to carry sensitive information, and so have the Automatic Encryption System (256 bit), which encrypts all the information you store onto the HDD. This means that your information cannot be accessed by anyone without your password, even if the device is completely opened up. Because both devices require no installation, you can use them on any PC. Both the HDPNC-U and the HDPNC-HSU have a button on the side that opens the device and allows you to quickly bring up the password screen. If the password has been guessed incorrectly one hundred times in a row, the device will permanently lock. At this point, it needs a re-initialization to work again. Toshiba's Desktop External Hard Drive comes in two flavours: the 1TB Toshiba PH3100U-1EXB ($159.99) and the 2TB Toshiba PH3200U-1EXB ($229.99). These mid-range external hard drives are eSATA and USB 2.0 compatible 5400 RPM (Rotations Per Minute) drives offering transfer rates of up to 480 Mb/s through USB 2.0 and 3.0Gb/s through their eSATA ports. However, these hard drives both come bundled with only a USB 2.0 cable, leaving out the eSATA cable and the faster data transfer option unless you are willing to buy an eSATA cable or own one already. Each unit has its own on/off switch for power down when not in use. The PH3100U-1EXB and PH3200U-1EXB are both compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7 as well as Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

These Toshiba external hard drives' 5400 RPM provides them with moderate access times as compared to faster 7200 RPM and slower 4200 RPM drives on the market. Their USB 2.0 ports allow for slower transfer speeds than their eSATA option but eSATA connectivity will not be available on all computers, primarily laptops.
