The BodyBugg is a simple device that you wear on your person at all times that monitors the amount of calorie burning you do throughout the day. By measuring your overall movements and intensity levels, bodybugg claims to register over 92% of all your calories used. This means that the walks around the office, to and from the bus stop and everything in between gets counted towards your calorie output. Originally released in 2005, the Bodybugg v3 was released in 2008 with a much smaller and sleeker armband.

The idea behind the Bodybugg is simple: in order to lose weight, you need to take in less calories than you put out. By keeping a constant measurement on the amount of calories you're expending, you can know how many calories you can take in.

The Bodybugg uses 4 main features to keep track of your activities (it's much more than just a pedometer).

Accelerometer - a two-axis micro-electro-mechanical sensor that measures motion
Heat flux - a sensor measures how much heat the person's body is giving off
Galvanic Skin Response - measures electrical current across the skin, essentially this aspect is measuring how much you sweat
Skin temperature - tracking a person's core body temperature gives the Bodybugg an indication of how much physical exertion the person is doing

The Bodybugg aims to be a complete fitness program by including a web-based aspect to the product. This part includes the downloading of your daily caloric outputs from the device as well as the wearer inputting the foods they ate throughout the day. They have an extensive database of foods available so you don't need to know the calories of each thing eaten, simply inputting the name will get translated into calories. The program then gives you a daily calorie deficit or surplus so you know if you're on track with your weight loss goals. The price of the Bodybugg includes a 3-month subscription to the web program as well as 2 phone sessions with a weightloss coach.

Note: for people inclined to doing more rigorous activity as part of their weightloss program, the Bodybugg might not provide results as accurate as a heart rate monitor, see the Polar F55 for a good option. The FitBit is a mid-grade fitness device that tracks a user’s sleep, movement, and burnt calories. Power 90 Extreme (aka P90X) is a 90-day total fitness program created by Tony Horton that combines a physically demanding workout routine with a strict diet. The program is split up into three 30-day phases that are meant to cause "muscle confusion", each phase has a specific workout schedule and associated diet plan. A combination of videos and the Fitness Workbook act as the guide for following the workout plan, while the nutrition plan is a standalone booklet. Included in the box is the set of 13-DVDs, the Fitness Workbook and the Nutrition Guide. The exercises themselves can be done in the home or at a gym, with equipment requirements limited to: yoga mat, weights, chin-up bar, or resistance bands (instead of weights and chin-up bar).

P90X Workout Routine

Each of the three phases is split up into four weeks, the first three weeks are the demanding workouts with the fourth week being a recovery/rest week using different kind of exercises. Within each week there are 6 days of intense exercises with a rest or optional stretch day. The 6 days of exercises are split between 3 days of resistance training and 3 days of cardio/stretching. The workout videos themselves have Tony Horton demonstrating the exercises with three other people. Each person is meant to represent the different kinds of intensity levels available with one person doing the easier versions of the exercises and another doing the more intense/extreme forms with two people in between.

The Mean Plan Method gives you a detailed calendar of meals giving you very specific food items to eat every single day. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and dinner are all listed out in great detail with recipes included in the book for most of the plates.

P90X Community

One of the other selling points that P90X markets is their large online community that's available for support and motivation. Most of the community is free, though there are some "premium" areas and forums limited to paying members. There is also a large contingent of P90X success stories that have posted their pictures and videos on various social networks, blogs, and YouTube.

By using Philips’ included software, users first upload their fitness goals onto the device via a USB interface. Then based on the user’s height, weight, age, and gender, the unit tracks the user’s activity and fills up a status bar according to the percentage (15% increments) of the total workout complete. Included also is additional space for going up to 115%. After a day of activity, the user then hooks the unit into their computer like an iPod, after which their profile is automatically updated with data on the day’s activity. The defining difference between DirectLife and similar products like the Nike+ is that Philips provides online HUMAN COACHES that review a user’s profile data and then provide meaningful feedback. The Horizon CE5.1 is a high-end elliptical trainer machine designed to provide users with comfortable exercise opportunities. The CE5.1 machine is equipped with a combination of entertainment and convenience features that are meant to make exercising more enjoyable. Full integrated surround speakers combined with MP3 compatibility provide customized music playback during workout sessions. To sweeten the deal the device also includes a Horizon "CoolFit" fitness fan to keep the user cool during more rigorous workouts. The CE5.1 machine includes 10 electronic program options and 18 FLATellipse simulated foot paths that are displayed via the LCD screen.

The Horizon CE5.1 elliptical machine maximizes and enhances the same basic features and specs as its predecessor model (CE4.1). The CE5.1 model features a front-drive frame design (flywheel in front) with a 14.3 pound flywheel motor to power the device. Rear access to the machine and a low sitting 10" step on pedal height allows users easy access. The device also includes 10 (fully electronic operated) resistance settings for different exercise strengths all created thanks to a magnetic brake resistance system.

A small LCD control panel with three separate orange displays provide information and the users heart rate monitored via metal heart rate grips on the balance handles of the device. The CE5.1 includes an 18" stride distance, meaning the machine will need ample space for operation; and for safety the footplates are outfitted with non slip rubber padding. Extra device features include "ZeroGap" narrow pedal placement, "Idealfit" handlebar spacing with different handlebars for different size users, and a "Smoothpulley" drive pulley system designed to provide smooth and fluid exercise movements.

The Horizon CE5.1 Elliptical machine includes several different warranties which are connected to specific parts on the device; the warranties are as follows, an individual lifetime warranty is included for the frame, a 15 year warranty is included for the brake system, and an additional 1 year warranty is included for parts and labor. All warranties are active and provided via the manufacturer Horizon.

It is worth noting that upon release the Horizon CE5.1 was only available in Canada; and was exclusively sold at Canadian Tire.

In January, 2010 the US Consumer Product and Safety Commission officially recalled several Horizon Elliptical machines; the foot pedal on said machines apparently becomes disconnected or unfastened during extensive use creating a serious hazard. The recall was voluntary meaning that users are not required to send the device back however recalled products may not be sold as it is illegal to do so. The device models affected by the recall are as follows: EX-58, EX-68, EX-78, GS1050E, CE5.1 and LIVESTRONG branded models LS7.9E, LS9.9E and LS12.9E.

The EX-57 includes the same basic features as many of Horizon's other elliptical exercise machines however it is stripped of several major features in order to keep the price range low. Due to Basic convenience support the EX-57 features little to no convenience options save the pivoting foot plate and narrow pedal spacing which Horizon claims is designed to "mimic" normal posture during exercise and thus provide additional comfort. The Horizon EX-57 model elliptical machine is powered by the front mounted 14 pound flywheel motor.

The Horizon EX-57 model elliptical machine includes a fully magnetic braking system that provide 8 different fully motorized resistance settings. The EX-57 model also includes an 18" stride length during operation meaning it also requires added space behind the machine during use. In addition to the resistance settings the EX-57 model also includes 9 goal settings for users to customize. All the device information such as total time exercised, total calories burned and difficulty settings are displayed via the LCD screen in plain black text.

The Life Fitness R3 Lifecycle is a middle-end exercise bike. It features a quick start feature, and a cool-down mode. The quick start feature allows the user to begin a work-out faster than usual. It achieves this by skipping the part where the user chooses the exercise program. This lets them start a work-out faster than usual, since they won't waste any time picking a work-out program. It also lets them do what they please, because of the lack of a specific work-out. The R3 Lifecycle also features a cool-down mode, which is designed to lower the users heart rate down to a normal level. It does this based on the work-out time, incline, and the users heart rate level, making it effective at returning their heart rate to normal. When compared to another Life Fitness exercise bike, the R1 Lifecycle, the R3 Lifecycle shares many of the same features, but has a few extra, such as the quick start feature and cool-down mode.

The basic module doesn’t feature any wireless heart rate monitoring (only for the X1), but the advanced console does. Featured are ErgoGrip stationary bars for maintaining stability during lower-body-only workouts, WhipserStride technology that ensures the back-and-forth movement doesn’t create a bunch of noise, and dual accessory racks in addition to a built-in reading rack. The Life Fitness Club Series Upright Lifecycle is a high-end exercise bike. It features manual work-out mode, and an "Extreme Heart Rate" mode. The manual work-out mode allows the user to choose what the speed and resistance levels will be. This lets them experiment to find out what's right for them, letting them create their perfect work-out. The Upright Lifecycle also features an Extreme Heart Rate mode, which quickly lowers and raises resistance to get the users heart rate up to 85%, and down to 65% as fast as possible. This gives the user a great work-out, and is sure to challenge them should they choose to attempt it. When compared to another exercise bike from the Life Fitness Club Series, the Recumbent Lifecycle, the Upright Lifecycle has many of the same features, but has a disadvantage in that it has less seat positions (13 versus 34).
