The Fonera is a second generation wireless G router from Fon. Designed as part of a social wireless access project, the affordable Fonera creates dual wireless networks - one private and the other public. Users who purchase the device and open their public networks to other members of the community receive free WiFi in return whereas those who do not can pay for access (part of that income is given back to those who provide the access). The Fonera 2.0g builds on the previous generation of Fon routers by adding a USB port which allows the device to share resources of USB-storage, webcams or printers. Attaching a 3G modem will permit the device to share an internet connection with users. The Fonera 2.0g was withdrawn following the introduction of the 2.0n router.

Pros
- Printer sharing
- Run a wireless hotspot for free or commercially - money paid to Fon for access to your connection is shared with you
- runs OpenWrt open source Linux based firmware
- Compact
- compatible with La Fontenna - an affordable signal booster
- Support for uploaders such as Facebook, Flickr, Youtube
- USB Webcam support
- affordable price
- a great idea
- many compatible firmwares are available - specifically used to remove the public access point features of the default version
- grants you free access to other access points run by Fon Fonera routers - over 500,000 hot spots to date
Cons
- Product has been made obsolete by the newer Fonera 2.0n router
- You still need an ADSL modem since this device is just a router
- not all ISPs allow sharing your internet connection
- Very low transfer speeds. Practically unusable as a USB storage / NAS / streamer / bittorrent. That's why it was replaced with 2.0N
- Most USB devices will not work without a USB hub
