"I like how you agreed that Windows Vista lacked"
"You obvoiusly don't know that much about computers and are cearly an Apple fanboi. Your Windows Vista con - "Does not support many standard media formats " was pretty ignorant. The OS has nothing to do with media formats. You might want to download VLC Media Player. Next time please do some research before posting your blatantly biased views more

TLDR, I just skimmed. However, I did get the gist of your post, pretty much you were saying, "I'm an Apple fanboi", right?

Ok Computer Basics: 101

The OS (Operating System...you're welcome) is a HOST for applications such as Windows Media Player, Calculator, etc. to run and it controls the hardware/software. Got it? Iknow it was grossly understated, but good enough for you.

"...and Microsoft also makes sure that their software by default only supports formats like WMV and WMA which are not standard..."

I'm not sure which WMP you've used but WMP 11 supports mp3 format, which IS standard; you can even rip to mp3 now. From what I read it sounds like you don't like WMP, you should put your 'comment' on that product's page.

Thanks for citing the case I'm about to own you with, - EU v. Microsoft. Apparently, the EU thought the same thing I did, and made Microsoft remove Windows Media Player.

"Try studying a little rather than jumping to conclusions..."
I invite anyone reading this post to check fractalhorizon's history, and email me if you think he is not a ProductWiki troll or an Apple fanboi. How do you say you like Firefox over Safari and then later say Safari is faster, oh right fanboi logic.

Listen I would continue to pwn you but it would do no good. I thought this would be an intelligent 'debate' if you will, but I was wrong.

You can respond to this I won't. As anyone who posts on forums knows, you cannot intellectually debate a fanboi.

Go back to school and try again mate.

Microsoft insists on bundling Windows Media player with the OS, in fact they claimed in their defense in an EU antitrust case that it is an inseparable part of the Windows operating system. So, your claim that "OS has nothing to do with media formats" doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Windows media does not support many standards (as in the ones that are certified by appropriate standards bodies, not the ones Microsoft calls 'standard'), and Microsoft also makes sure that their software by default only supports formats like WMV and WMA which are not standard, and not compatible with any platforms other than Windows (with some minor exceptions).

Certainly, VLC has great standards support and is a great example of what media software should be like - open source, standards based and portable to any platform. VLC is everything Windows Media (and therefore, according to Microsoft, Windows) is NOT, and that certainly proves my point.

By the way, getting a couple of postgrad degrees in computer science and IT, and being a MSCD (thats Microsoft Certified Software Developer) for the last 15 years does allow one to speak with a little bit of authority. Try studying a little rather than jumping to conclusions, I suggest finishing high school may be a good start.
