Sony PlayStation Move

The PlayStation Move controller is Sony's response to Nintendo's tremendous success with the Wii. Using a combination of internal sensors and the Playstation Eye, the PS3 is able to track the Move's position and orientation to enable Wii-like motion based controls. Both the Playstation Eye and a Move controller are necessary to enable motion controls. For games that require an analog stick, a regular Dual Shock controller can be used, or a more optimized one-handed controller that Sony dubs the PlayStation Move sub-controller.

Probably the most notable physical feature of the Move controller is the large glowing ball at the top. This ball is used by the Playstation Eye to determine the controller's position relative to the TV, and performs other calibration tasks. The ball itself can be set to any RGB color and will probably vary depending on the lighting in the room, and the number of people simultaneously playing.

On the PlayStation Move controller itself there's a large button in the center where your thumb rests. Along the four corners of this central button are the four regular PlayStation buttons (Square, Triangle, X, and O). On the backside of the wand are two triggers in similar style to Xbox 360 triggers, with one trigger button having a concave ramp, while the other is more of a bumper or traditional button.

The Razer Onza is a high-end gaming controller for use with the Xbox 360 console. Razor specifically designed the Onza with all types of gamers in mind; from competitive to casual. Similar to the Nyko Intercooler and Pelican's other device, the Fan Stand, the Pro Cooler adds extra cooling capabilities to your Xbox 360 console that aims to extend the life of the console through reducing operating temperatures. This product goes above and beyond the normal cooling duties and expands the Xbox 360's audio visual ports and removes the need for using expensive proprietary adapters.

The Pro Cooler passes through the power adapter, and converts the normal single 360 a/v output into separate component, composite, VGA, S-Video and optical audio outputs. The Cyborg RAT 3 is one of four Cyborg gaming mice released by Mad Catz Interactive in Spring 2010. As the base unit, the RAT 3 hosts a 3200dpi gaming-grade laser, 4 custom DPI settings that can be switched via a Rocker Switch, 3 programmable buttons that can be combined with the left/right mouse buttons for a total of 5 buttons, and 3 Cyborg Modes for toggling between three individual R.A.T. modes. That brings the total to 9 buttons. Most importantly, the device is extremely versatile, in that the sensitivity can be changed (mentioned earlier), custom gaming profiles can be created, and of course any command can be assigned to a button. Overall critics say the device is extremely customizable and that it hosts a “wickedly accurate tracking system.” However, it’s considered extremely ugly by most.

Microsoft Kinect is an 'interactive method' accessory for the Xbox 360. The device sits close to your television, similar to the Wii sensor bar, and includes both a regular and infrared cameras. This lets the device perform functions such as image recognition through the regular camera, and motion tracking through the IR sensors. Microsoft is touting Natal as a breakthrough in control schemes one-upping Nintendo's Wii-mote as your body is the controller. The Natal also contains a microphone that allows the software to be enhanced with voice recognition technology.

Demo'd during the 2009 E3 conference very little actual footage was shown of the device in real world situations, other than a brief manufactured promotional video and a small sample of prototype applications. From the conference Microsoft is making it clear that the Natal is targeted towards the casual expanded audience that Nintendo has captured with the Wii. Speculations on release date and price point are rampant, but nothing has been confirmed or even indicated.

Emotiv EPOC

The EPOC headset, by Emotiv, allows users to directly control video game activity through their brainwaves. It uses a set of sensors that monitor the human brain to directly interface with most wireless-enabled PC's, as well as video game consoles. This means the actions of your virtual character in a video game can be directly controlled through your mind.

Technology

The EPOC uses a set of 14 sensors that detect patterns sent through the 100 billion brain cells (neurons). These patterns are narrowed down and interpreted in 30 different possible ways as real-time emotions, intentions, and facial expressions that are then reflected in the virtual world. The EPOC noninvasively detects brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG), a measure of brain waves, via the 14 sensors. This detects activity along the brains cortex, a folded region of the brain that controls high level thoughts, which is then interpreted through an algorithm developed by Emotiv.

Creation

Emotiv employed a team of neuroscientists, who understand the brain at a systems level, and programmers, who all were all good with machine learning and pattern recognition. This team conducted EEG tests on thousands of (non-gamer) volunteers over the course of four years and eventually were able to find patterns that showed up on all people. It would take several powerful computers 72 hours to process 10 seconds of brain data for similarites. Eventually, Emotiv found consistent mental patterns associated with each emotion.

Possible Usage

Emotiv is starting to work with game developers to hopefully create games that greatly interface with the EPOC headset so that EPOC specific features can be added. Some possibilites include scanning for boredom to know when to create more enemies, or changing the game music to something suspenseful when a user becomes tense. Currently Emotiv's goal with the EPOC is not to replace conventional controllers, but to compliment them in order to have a better human interface. One of the most obvious usages would be with Second Life so that instead of hitting a button to change expressions, the virtual avatar would simply reflect whatever the player is thinking.

Availability

Emotiv intends to release the EPOC in late 2008. It can be pre-ordered at Emotiv's website. The price for pre-orders, with shipping, is $299. Currently it is only avaliable to customers in the United States.

The Thrustmaster T500 RS is a 12" diameter racing wheel with all metal realistic pedals on a separate base weighing over 15 pounds. A 'realistic brake mod' is included that you can attach to the brake pedal which shortens the throw of the pedal and contains a metal spring and foam material, making for a more progressive brake resistance when the pedal is depressed similar to a real car. The base can be set up F1 style which is right side up, or it can be used GT style upside down, and all three pedals can be adjusted left, right, up, down or tilted according to your preference. For those PC gamers out there who love their keyboard and mouse combo and can't seem to get used to the Xbox 360 controller, the Xfps adapter might be your answer. The adapter allows you to connect any PS/2 input device as well as USB keyboards and mice. The Playstion 2 peripherals are also compatible such as the PS2 guitar, PS2 light gun and PS2 dancing pads.

The main motivation behind the XFPS 360 adapter is to enhance the First Person Shooter experience. The company who manufactures the XFPS, XCM Technologies, feels strongly that the Xbox 360 controller is completely unsuited to playing FPS games and therefore allowing your fingers to use a keyboard and mouse (as PC gamers are undoubtedly used to using) you will be more accurate.

The adapter is relatively unassuming with a plastic shell that can sits on any surface, although the black color choice is a bit suspect given the cream exterior of the standard 360. There have been some complaints about compatibility issues, namely the lack of detection for some mice and keyboards. However, the PS2 controllers work well and are plug-and-play detected.

The M3 DS Real is a flash card adapter that can be used as to run homebrew Nintendo DS applications, and play media files (photos, videos, music) on the Nintendo DS Lite. It is one of many third-party rewritable game cartridge solutions that provide this functionality. The M3 DS Real is one of the newest of such devices, and is referred to a "SLOT-1" device since it fits in DS game slot (SLOT-1) on the top of the DS Lite vs. the Game Boy Advance game slot (SLOT-2) at the bottom of the player.

How it works

This solution is one of the most comprehensive and simple DS homebrew solutions to come out so far. Earlier generations of DS homebrew adapters required were fairly confusing and were plagued with several issues: 1) DS/GBA compatibility issues, 2) they required flashing of the DS firmware, and 3) homebrew applications needed to be patched before use. Controversy

There is controversy surrounding this and other similar devices, since in the process of allowing the running of homebrew applications, the device can be used for piracy. Technically the software development kits used to develop the homebrew software are also subject to speculation since they are not officially licensed by Nintendo.

The Ctrl+S is an upcoming high-end controller manufactured by UNIQ, designed for the Playstation 3 video game console. When compared to the standard Playstation 3 controller, the Ctrl+S has many major differences, such as completely different button placement, and redesigned grips. The Ctrl+S features the "UNIQ Wing" design, which allows the user to support the controller with the inside of their index finger, as opposed to a traditional game controller which requires the user to grip the controller with their palms. The Mad Catz Street Fighter IV Round 2 FightPad an accessory for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 systems released in late 2009. It is in fact a replacement for the original Mad Catz Street Fighter IV FightPad. It features the same 8-way floating D-pad, 6-button layout with additional multi-speed Turbo functionality, and rubbed grips. The difference is that the new release offers six different character-based designs, including: M. Bison, Guile, Zangief, C. Viper, Cammy, and Sagat. Overall, the Round 2 FightPad is practically the same as its predecessor; serious Street Fighter IV players will likely find the new designs very appealing and worthwhile though.

The SteelSeries 7G is a mechanical gaming keyboard designed for ultra-quick reaction times and advanced key combinations. It utilizes a PS/2 buffer-system in conjunction with a ghosting system to support as many simultaneous key press commands as there are keys. This means users can do multiple tasks (crouch, aim, fire, etc.) at the same time. Also featured are audio ports for headphone-out / microphone-in use, a two-port USB hub, and media control keys for quickly adjusting the volume. Critics praise the SteelSeries 7G for its durable built, its low latency key presses, and its lack of bloatware. However, they have noted the lack of macro keys and other components that’d fit with such a price tag, such as integrated profiles and perhaps even an LCD display.
