Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP-3000)

The previous version, the PSP slim (PSP-2000) was a big improvement over its predecessor. It was a lighter and thinner handheld machine that enabled us to watch higher quality UMD video and view pictures and movies straight off a memory stick duo. With the new version it was also possible to charge the battery from a USB connection. There are fewer changes this time with the PSP 3000, but the enhanced screen is a major improvement and for PSP1000 owners the PSP3000 will be a major step up.

Nintendo DSi

Released in North America on April 5th, 2009 the Nintendo DSi is an update to the phenomenally successful Nintendo DS system. The DSi is a more streamlined and enhanced version of the DS instead of a completely new handheld. Maintaining the same dual-screen setup the DSi increases the size of each individual screen while decreasing the overall weight of the unit and making it thinner than the DS Lite. Furthermore Nintendo has added a few new features to make it more competitive including a camera, built-in web-browser, and built-in audio decoding capabilities. Nintendo is also emphasizing digital distribution with the DSi as games can be purchased with Nintendo points and stored on SD cards. Not all DS Lite functions have been transferred over as the GBA expansion slot is completely removed eliminating compatibility with certain DS titles such as Guitar Hero On Tour that use the expansion slot for a peripheral.

Features

0.3MP camera

Built-in audio decoding capabilities (AAC format for now)

Official web-browser

Thinner and lighter than DS Lite

Larger screens than DS Lite

MSRP: $169.99

Sony PSP2 (NGP)

The Sony PSP2 currently labeled the NGP is the high-end successor to the portable Sony PSP gaming console. The PSP2 is slated to be increasingly more powerful than the original PSP with a unique social networking integration known as LiveArena (no more XrossMediaBar), and Android market support.

The Sony NGP will feature an ARM Cortex -A9 quad core CPU combined with an SGX543MP4+ GPU, which will obviously create a much larger and heavier device than the original. The NGP includes additional internal components and features such as a front and rear camera, integrated stereo speakers, and integrated microphone, a rear multi-touch pad (capacitive), and a Six-axis motion sensing system (accelerometer). Full location services support will also be included and supported through use of an integrated GPS with full Wi-Fi location service support as well. The NGP will also include 3G functionality and support to provide constant access to networking features even on the go.

The NGP will not use traditional UMDs (Universal Media Discs) like the original PSP but will instead use an unidentified "new media", which will most likely be similar to memory cards.

Sony has announced the price tag will be higher than expected and the device will release sometime towards the end of 2011, no specifics were given as of this writing.

The Razer Switchblade is a highly portable, handheld PC gaming device with dual 7" multi-touch displays. The second display features a layer of tactile, dynamic keys which adapt to different gaming situations. Additionally, the Switchblade sports an Intel Atom processor, a pre-installed copy of Windows 7 with a custom user interface and a 128GB solid state drive.

The Switchblade's dynamic keyboard can be set with whichever control scheme best suits the current game being played, allowing for full-sized keys and proper functionality in a small forma factor. Its Intel Atom processor allows the Switchblade to handle more intense games while still allowing for a smaller form factor and relatively long battery life (the Switchblade is estimated at 4-6 hours of continuous use). Meanwhile, since the Switchblade runs Windows 7, it is capable of providing typical netbook/notebook functionality (web browsing, video watching, etc).

Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP-2000)

Marketed as a Playstation 2 in your pocket, the PSP has evolved into a device with its own identity that has a strong connection to the PS3, and a diverse offering of titles. While not providing the same graphic fidelity of the PS2, the PSP still emphasizes graphics and a rich audio/visual experience compared to the Nintendo DS. In summer of 2007 Sony released the PSP Slim that is lighter, slimmer and features a TV-out port that lets you connect your PSP to the television directly.

Equipped with a wireless LAN feature, PSP enables users to connect to the Internet through access points, making it possible for users to download game characters and content and also to play games on-line with families, friends and on-line community members. For a more intimate gaming experience, a maximum of 16 PSP systems can be connected wirelessly through the ad-hoc mode allowing family and friends to create an instant yet powerful local on-line entertainment community.

PSP features an integrated high output lithium-ion battery that provides play time of between 4 and 6 hours for game titles and continuous 4 to 5 hours for video viewing.

With PSP, the world of PlayStation, people's most favourite platform, is further enhanced. A 4.3 inch wide 16:9 high resolution LCD screen, the largest in a handheld gaming device, creates a personal environment in which to enjoy games, music and video anytime, anywhere, with a dynamism that has never been possible before.

Nevertheless, the device is not planned to replace the original PSP device, which will continue to be sold. A price or release date have not yet been released.

Powered by embedded Linux, the GP2X offers video playback of sources up to a resolution of 720x480. The vivid 3.5inch screen features 170,000 colors and a 320x240 pixel TFT LCD display. Backed by a Dual-CPU, both clocked at 200Mhz, 64MBytes of Flash Memory (non-volatile to store data) and 64MBytes of RAM, it gives you all a video games enthusiast can ask for. The system is free for anybody to develop software on, be it emulators or native applications. Games and emulators perfectly utilize the screen resolution.

The buttons are laid out in a classic style, essential for true gaming. Often referred to as the poor man's PSP. One of its strong suits is the ability to load console emulators, and play many vintage games (MAME, SNES, Atari, NeoGeo) on the GP2X handheld.

The GP2x Cradle, also known as the breakout board, is compatible with the F-100 and -F-200 iterations. With 4 USB 2.0 ports, S-Video out, and audio out, the cradle adds functionality to the device that brings it closer to the realm of mobile computing, rather than just a gaming platform.

Gamepark Holdings GP2x F-200

The GP2X-F200 is the second iteration of the semi-popular GP2X-F100 open source handheld. The two most apparent changes are the switch from an analog stick to an 8-way d-pad, and the addition of a touchscreen. Less conspicuously, SDHC support was added, as well as a small bump in processor speed.

The F-200 was initially criticized for the addition of a touchscreen, and the usual complaint of using AA batteries remains. Regardless, like it's predecessor, the homebrew community has embraced the device, and a variety of touchscreen-enabled apps have already been made available.
