Garmin's nuvi 1690 is a mid-range GPS receiver for use in a vehicle, and it builds on previous nuvi models mainly through the inclusion of Garmin's nuLink! service, a live-updating service that provides local information and allows Google Local searches, as well as providing helpful information like the nearest fuel prices. This nuvi also has a lane assistant, which is designed to help navigate unfamiliar intersections before arriving at them, by displaying street signs or instructing which lane to stay in. This unit uses turn-by-turn directions and reads street names, and there is also a fuel-saving mode that attempts to calculate the most fuel-efficient route to a destination. Other features include route planning and saving, Bluetooth wireless speakerphone to use a mobile phone hands-free, and an emergency service locator.

NAVIGON 8100T
MSRP $500.00
Released June, 2009
Pros
- Easy to use, good user interface. Soft buttons on screens improves user experience over many other stereos.
- Great iPod features for compressed sound restoration, and on the fly shuffle by artist or album.
- Detachable face very handy for planning trips with GPS and Navigation outside car.
Cons
- Software is Windows only and feels gimmicky, it lacks utility.
- Comes with limited number of Navigation" points of interest". 400 thousand rather than the 12 million available for other AVIC systems. Restaurants have been completely omitted. The POI's can be upgraded for $100.00 which degrades it's status as a bargain.
- Defaults to Navigation view (or mode) every time you start car. Would be nice if it remember the mode it was left in.
