The Garmin Nuvi 550 is a waterproof multi-mode GPS navigator designed for use in the car, in the boat, on a cycle or on foot. It provides spoken directions via internal speaker and can accept maps using it's MicroSD card slot as well as already coming preloaded with detailed street maps for North America and Europe. Also preloaded are millions of points of interest (POI's) but you can upload your own, and you can upload geo-tagged photos. Other features include an emergency locator, HotFix satellite prediction, support for FM traffic alerts and MSN content, picture viewer and anti-theft. You can also add topographic off-road maps and BlueChart g2 Vision and Inland Lakes Vision marine maps.

Pros
- has 3 GPS maps; car, hiking, and marine.
- has audible directions so you don't have to look at map in busy traffic
- I have used this in 120 degree heat and -40 degree cold. It hasn't always worked, but most of the time it does.
Cons
- Locks up fairly often, seems to do it in hiking mode a lot.
- Magellan has terrible map updating
- Not compatible with Apple computers
