The GE 2279 is a DTV converter that allows analog TVs to watch digital channels. On February 17th, 2009, all TV in the U.S. goes digital-only, at which point anyone who has an analog TV and receives TV through an antennae wil require a DTV converter to continue to watch broadcast TV. The GE 22729 is eligible for a $40 government coupon, and includes a remote. It also can interface with a GE Smart Antennae (sold separately) to lock in the best signal possible. The GE Digital Converter 22730 does not have this feature.
