A "Rider Reflex" interface provides complete control of the rider's posture and the bike itself, creating a more realistic experience for the player. The track itself is deformed in real-time on every lap, giving the players a new layer of complexity as they adjust to ever-changing conditions. Rider-to-rider collisions are tracked to enable win/loss conditions based on the amount of abuse the player has given other riders. The riders in the game are based on real riders, feature real gear, and have real licensors throughout. A campaign mode is available to allow the player to try and win the Motocross Championship title, and an online mode allows races of between 2 and 12 players.

It was released in spring 2011 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows gaming consoles and operating systems. As a direct sequel to Need for Speed: Shift (2009), Shift 2 features a new helmet camera that not only places the player inside the vehicle, but also provides a more realistic experience in which players can almost literally feel the inertia and drag within the car. For instance, when a player makes a sharp turn, the camera pans into the turn like as would happen to a real racer. Also featured are the 2010 FIA GT1 World Championships and the FIA GT3 European Championship, improved graphics and audio, and an updated version of the Autolog multiplayer matchmaking service that allows players to form friends lists.

Online gameplay is supported through a split-screen layout, with the addition of a networking client called "Autolog" enabling linked players to submit their best times and scores for others to beat. Hot Pursuit revolves around a credited experience system known as "Bounty", providing users with access to knew vehicles and mode types upon previous achievements.

Split/Second is a action-driving video game, that is to be released by Disney Interactive Studio in May 18, 2010. Developed by Black Rock Studios, the game is set up as a reality television show where drivers race courses that are constantly being bombed and blown up. These destructive environments serve as the game's main gameplay mechanic. It is available for XBox 360, PS3, and Microsoft Windows, and will have multiplayer options both at home and online.

In the game, you will race around collapsing buildings, crashing airplanes, and lots and lots of explosions. By pulling off advanced skills like drifting, drafting and jumps, you can build up your meter power meter. And once you do, you can trigger the detonation o begin. This means that every lap of your 3-lap race can be completely different depending on how your detonations change the course. One feature that might lengthen the game's interest for gamers is the dual-screen multiplayer at home and an 8-player multiplayer system online.

Forza Motorsport 2

Forza Motorsport 2 is the sequel to the popular simulation racing game Forza Motorsport. The game is developed by Turn10 studios, the same studio that created the first game. In Forza you pick from one of the hundreds of cars available, from performance street models such as the Civic Si to racing-only prototype models. Attention to details, and recreation of reality is the goal of the Forza team, and with the sequel the developers have increased all aspects of customization, simulation, and community that made the first Forza popular. Forza is Microsoft's direct competition to Sony's Gran Turisimo series.

The two main modes of playing in Forza are the customization mode, and the racing mode. Customization lets you take any of the cars they have purchased using the in-game currency, and modifying them in various ways to suit your driving style. Almost all aspects of the car can be modified including tire pressure, suspension, engine, spoilers, etc. The game also contains a sophisticated decal editing/painting mode which lets you customize the look of the car, this mode existed in the original Forza and many people created very impressive images including the Mona Lisa. New to the series is an online auction house where people around the world can buy and sell custom cars that they've created using the in-game currency. Cars that are purchased or modified yourself can then be raced either online or through the single-player career mode.

Racing is the other side of the Forza coin. In Forza 2 the developers have claimed that they've increased the game's simulation speed to 320FPS from the first game's 120FPS. They claim that this increased sampling rate has a significant impact on the authenticity and handling on the cars. Racing modes include time trials and normal races against other opponents. Each successful race rewards you with in-game money which can then be used to purchase new cars either stock from the game's database, or pre-modified cars that are put in the auction house. Due to the game's realistic nature there are a number of assists that are available to players that are new to the game. Anti-lock brake systems, vehicle stability assist and driving lines are all available to use to make the driving experience easier and more straightforward.

Forza 2 is also the first game to be built from the ground up to make use of Microsoft's wireless force feedback steering wheel. The Forza team has also included multi-display functionality to enhance the Forza experience, this allows you to hook up 4 Xbox 360s through a network, hooked up to 4 independent displays to have displays act as the front and side angles, with the fourth being the rear-view mirror. To have this setup requires 4 Xbox 360s, 4 monitors, and 4 copies of Forza.

It is in fact the 5th major release in the Gran Turismo series and is available in two formats: as a Universal Media Disc (UMD) or as a digital download from the Playstation store. The main purpose of the game is to complete driving missions and slowly advance to the top. On the way, users can collect over 800 licensed vehicles; trade and share cars with their friends via an Ad Hod wireless connection; compete with their friends in heated 4-player races; and eventually transfer their collection to Gran Turismo 5. Gran Turismo PSP actually includes over 100 challenges with 60 total track layouts. The actual design is fairly “open-ended” though, as players themselves choose which mode — time trial, single race, drift trial — and circuit to race.

Colin McRae: DiRT

Colin McRae: Dirt is the first next-gen installment of the popular Colin McRae series of rally racing games. The game puts you in the seat of a variety of vehicles including traditional rally cars, trucks, and buggies. You take these vehicles and race against the clock or other drivers along rally courses which are filled with different types of terrain, most of them fitting for the game's title.

There are four main modes of play: career, where you take part in all the game's different race types with ever increasing difficulty; Championship mode, lets you play full length rally events; Rally World, gives you the option to replay any of the events encountered in career mode; and online Multiplayer. The multiplayer side of the game gets special mention since its different than many other online racing games. Instead of pitting you head to head against other racers on the same track, the multiplayer works by allowing up to 100 people to vote on a course and vehicle, and then all race simultaneously by themselves continually comparing times as the race progresses.

The game straddles the edge of arcade and simulation racer. Vehicles control in an unrealistic fashion with the cars turning about a central pivot point instead of their wheels, which makes for flashier drifting and driving. However, the game offers simulation aspects through its detailed damage model that allows you to dent and rip parts off of your car, and even take out the engine completely making you restart the race.

The 15th+ installment in the highly successful ‘Need for Speed’ series, “Need for Speed: Nitro” handles the series’ formula differently than its predecessors by presenting different control options, changeable gameplay elements, and a unique art system that allows the user to customize their own auto designs. Essentially, Nitro is geared for casual camers, versus hardcore ‘Need for Speed’ fans. Controls can be eased for simplification, allowing less-experienced racing gamers to also partake in the ‘Need for Speed’ experience. Another notable feature of ‘Need for Speed: Nitro’ is its exaggerated racing models, which share more similarity with classics like ‘Mario Cart’ versus its own peers.

Additional Information

Additional features of ‘Need for Speed: Nitro’ include power-ups, world tagging (via logo), obstructive cops (delay player progress), and up to 12 racers per race.

Developed by Evolution Studios, MotorStorm delivers visceral off-road racing, plunging players into a frenzied environment awash with grit, mud and petrol, in a game that leaves the standard rules of racing in the dust. Gone are the limits of power restrictions, limited classes, and qualifying rounds. Players simply choose their vehicle from a massive range – including dirt bikes, ATVs, sand rails, rally cars, monster trucks, and everything in between – then hit the track in a no-holds-barred sprint to the finish line. Carving a swathe of destruction through the ever-changing wilderness, players must compete in a gasoline-fuelled, horsepower spectacle where the only rule is to try and stay alive.

MotorStorm was released December 14, 2006 in Japan and on March 6th, 2007 in North America and Europe. MotoStorm is expected to sell alongside the PS3 starting March 23rd, 2007. The game feature single player and online play, but lacks a local multiplayer split-screen mode. MotorStorm has been well-received by critics, including an 8.9 rating from IGN, and a lower 7.9 rating from GameSpot.

It is an action game that focuses on the cinematic approach to gaming, making the game more like a movie with car chase sequences, pulling off stunts and driving a car very, very fast. Though the game is based on the character being behind a wheel, at times the player has to get out of the car, walk around, and possibly hijack a truck or a motorcycle to make getaways. The plot line is focused around Milo Burik (Vin Diesel) who is an undercover agent posing as a driver-for-hire in Barcelona. It is fairly basic, work for the badguys and eventually try to take them down. The player can expect crooked cops, rivel gangs and a general splurge of chaos and corruption that is standard in this sort of generic plot line.

In Sonic Riders, Dr. Eggman challenges Sonic and his friends to a Worldwide Grand Prix, and the prize for coming out on top is an ultra-rare Chaos Emerald! Gliding on air boards – which are performance-oriented for each playable character – gamers will experience a heightened sense of sports-style racing tension as Sonic and his pals perform tricks and stunts over treacherous wide-open terrain.

Sonic and friends speed through tracks on air boards, using individual special moves to strike down opponents. Air is a big element of Sonic Riders. Your board's "fuel" source is air. You can fill up your air at various points on the course, but to race well you'll have to use another means of replenishment: performing tricks with your board. You'll also want to make use of turbulence from racers who are in front of you.

The gameplay from Super Mario Kart is largely unchanged: players still race around courses inspired by Mario games as Mario series characters, all while attacking each other with items picked up from the track. Courses are divided into multiple cups which are challenged in a Grand Prix event, the reward for which is new courses to unlock. Also available are time trial modes with savable high scores and multiplayer modes, including a battle mode where attacking your opponents, not beating them to a goal, is the objective. Especially notable for this release was the addition of a mini-turbo system which added strategy to how one maneuvered around turns - a feature that went on to become a series mainstay. Selling 5.5 million copies in the United States, Mario Kart 64 helped establish the series as a pillar of Nintendo's success.

The player is given a certain number of strikes, which go down if they mess up a stunt. If all the strikes are depleted, the entire scene must be reshot, and the player must start the level over. There also is the multiplayer mode, where the players can choose from two sub-modes- one, where the players try to do the most stunts per lap, and the other, a simple racing mode. When compared to the previous game in the series, Stuntman, Stuntman Ignition features several advantages, including improved graphics and physics.

A new franchise introduced in the next-gen, the first Full Auto released on the Xbox 360 to moderate success. Pseudo Interactive and SEGA learned a lot of lessons in the process and applied those improvements to this sequel. Full Auto keeps the same model of racing with destruction, cranking up the destruction to new levels. The biggest complaint with the original game was the lack of any kind of deathmatch mode, limiting multiplayer to the standard racing types. Pseudo is introducing a whole new way to play Full Auto with the Arena Mode. Similar to Twisted Metal arena mode ditches the racing side of things entirely and matches players against each other in versus play. There are a few different arena modes, from the straight up deathmatch to capture the flag.

Ridge Racer 7 is the second next-gen installment to the ultra-arcadey Ridge Racer series. Namco continues with the traditional gameplay that has made the Ridge Racer series a gaming icon for the past 12 years, with completely unrealistic drifting mechanics and beautiful unrealistic cars. Namco introduces a few new quirks to the Ridge formula that should keep the series fresh for long-time fans. Players are now able to perform some basic mechanic tuning on their vehicles to tune the cars to fit their playstyles better. By mixing and matching optional parts, players can make the cars drifting monsters, super grip machines, or somewhere in between to best suit your style. The other new feature is the introduction of the slipstream system, known as drafting in traditional racing. Drive up close enough behind a car and fall underneath their slipstream to get a speed boost and blow past them.

Ridge Racer 6 for the 360 brought Ridge Racer into the online scene, and while there were some hiccups, was overall a great experience. Namco has extended the online portion of RR7 even further offering up more modes and more ways to play.

Remember tilting your arms to try to make your character land a huge jump? That experience is finally a reality with Excite Truck, a wild, off-road race in which players hold the Wii Remote like an NES controller to control the truck. The 2 button is the accelerator, the 1 button is the brake, the + Control Pad is the turbo. Tilt the Wii Remote right and left like a steering wheel to steer. Once the truck goes airborne, tilt the Wii Remote every which way to line up perfect landings for turbo boosts. Pick up items on the courses to make the terrain deform in real time, turning innocent bumps into massive launch pads that affect not only the player's route, but that of his or her rivals. Players jump and bump their way to the highest score and highest finish.

Sony's fourth Jak and Dexter game, JAK X: COMBAT RACING for the PS2, takes the series away from its action/adventure roots and into the world of combat racing. As the name implies, this isn't a normal racing game; players will have to watch out for environmental hazards like lava and boulders while guarding against homing missiles, attack drones, and other weapons unleashed by the other racers. The story of JAK X weaves together several different plots that began in the previous games. Krew, a villain from JAK II, is dead, and Jak and Dexter are asked to attend the reading of his will along with Sig, Ashelin, Krew's daughter Rayn, and others. One of Krew's requests is that everyone drink a toast in his honor; however, the wine is poisoned The rest of Krew's instructions are then revealed: if any of the characters can win the Kras City Grand Championship in his name, they will be given the antidote. With no choice in the matter, the group enters the race, but soon, each is vying to win no matter what. The game features four different cups consisting of 20 challenges each, plus a large number of unlockable extras like more tracks, car upgrades, new racers, and more. Different weapons and abilities are available on each track, allowing players to fire lasers and create oil slicks to stop their opponents. JAK X: COMBAT RACING will keep players on their toes as they attempt to win the race and the antidote.

Tourist Trophy: The Real Riding Simulator

Polyphony Digital has announced its oft-rumored motorcycle simulator. Titled Tourist Trophy: The Real Riding Simulator, this PS2 title promises to do to two wheels what Gran Turismo did to four.

Polyphony seems to be going all out with this one, with a collection of bikes from big bike makers like Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda. The developer is even including real life suits and helmets. Polyphony is concentrating on making these bikes control like the real thing. Of course, with motorcycles, cornering is an important part of the race, and, sure enough, changing your riding form during cornering plays a major role in the game.
