StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the first part of the StarCraft II trilogy. It contains full multiplayer capability and the Terran campaign. The Zerg and Protoss campaigns will be released as expansions, entitled Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void, respectively. Each campaign has 27-30 missions, meaning that the entire StarCraft II trilogy will have almost three times the number of missions in Brood War.

The long awaited sequel comes over a decade since the release of the original StarCraft, a landmark game in the real-time strategy genre. Announced at a world wide invitational press conference on May 19, StarCraft II continues the legacy set down by its predecessor and continues the story of the war between the Protoss, Zerg and Terran races. Full 3D graphics, new units, and new abilities are all introduced for this second installment.

A several month long beta started in eary 2010, and a two-week final release candidate beta took place in early July 2010. The game was released on July 23rd, 2010. Digital downloads from Blizzard had been available since the previous week, however the game could not be installed until the release date.

Controversy

The strict DRM that Blizzard uses to control cheating, piracy and unauthorized copying has come under much attack, ever since Blizzard announced that the game would not include LAN and the only way to legally play multiplayer was through their Battle.net service. An internet connection is required for install, and the game can only be played offline for a month until the user must log in again to reactivate the game. Each game is tied to a single Battle.net account, and is region locked. Rumor has it that much of the DRM was pushed onto Blizzard by Activision, although nothing has been confirmed.

Based on the source engine, the online multiplayer aspect is the main attraction on the game - pitting 4 user survivors of a zombie apocalypse against hoards of zombie cannon fodder and 4 "infected" super mutants - also played by real people. The point of the game is for the survivors to make their way across the map as fast as possible without dying - due to the fact that amunition and health supplies are in limited supply, while zombie players main objectives are to stop them.

A compliation of Blizzard's Starcraft games, including Starcraft, Starcraft:Brood War, and strategy guides for both the games by Prima Publishing.

Starcraft

The three races, Terran (humans), Protoss (technological aliens), and Zerg (biological aliens), are at war with each other. The player chooses one of the three races to fight with. Each race provides a vastly different play style than its other two counterparts. The Terrans have access to advanced combat technology, including tanks and nuclear missles. The Protoss have the advantage of powerful energy weapons and energy shields. The Zerg prefer to use teeth and claw to fight their battles. While the races may be very different, no race is better than the other. Starcraft has a campagin mode for each race, quick games for custom battles, and a multiplayer mode (BattleNet) that has numerous challenges to compete in.

Starcraft: Brood Wars

The expansion pack to Starcraft offers a wide vareity of new content. Each of the three races campagins are entirely new, expanding on the story in the first game. Each race gains new units as well. The Protoss now have Dark Templars and Dark Archons (previously seen in Starcraft, but could not be controlled). The Dark Archons cannot fight directly, but are able to take control of the minds of the enemies troops, turning them against their former masters. The Terrans now have the Medic, an infantry healing unit that augments the main fighting force. The Zerg get the Lurker, Gurdian, and Devourer. The lurker is an evolved form of a Hydralisk that cannot attack above ground, but when it burrows it shoots a trail of spikes across the ground at enemies. Gurdians and Devourers are evolved from Mutalisks. Gurdians specialize in air to ground combat while Devourers attack units in the air. In addition to the new units, there are also new technologies to research.

You once again take control of the Protoss, Humans, and Zerg, each with there own unique play style and units. There are over 100 new multiplayer maps to litter with your opponets corpses, as well as expanded online play that offers more modes to choose from.

There are seven new units in all, 2 for the humans and zerg and 3 for the protoss. The Protoss Corsair is a support fighter ship. It's fast, but its gun are relatively weak. Its real strength comes from its disruption web ability which disrupts all ground to air attacks within the web. Also new to the party is the dark archon, created by fusing two dark templars. The dark archon cannot fight, but it has the ability to stun organic units and take control of enemy troops with its Mind Control ability. The new Dark Templars are the masters of deadly stealth attacks. They are permanently cloaked and have a powerful warp blade which cuts ground units down to size. The Terran medic has the ability to heal organic ground units, as well as blind enemies and remove statis effects. The Valkyrie is a powerful air to air fighter, launching many vollies of missles at her unfortunate target. The Zerg Devourer fires a blast of corrosive acid at air units, causing them to fire more slowly and to take more damage when hit. The Lurker is evolved from a Hydrolisk. It is unable to attack above ground, but when it burrows it launches a line of spikes through the ground at enemies.

Pikmin

A completely new property for Nintendo from the creative mind of Shigeru Miyamoto, you play as Captain Olimar who's spaceship has crashed on a strange alien planet. The ship was damaged in the crash, you only have 30 days before the planets atmosphere eats away your space suit. You must find all of the scattered space ship parts to leave the planet before the 30 day period. But you're not entirely alone. Little plant-like creatures called Pikmin seem determined to help you.

Gameplay

Pikmin offers up a unique blend of Real-Time Strategy, Adventure, and Puzzle solving aspects. The biggest part of the game is managing your Pikmin. Random objects that you find can be taken back to the Pikmin space ship to produce more Pikmin seeds. Once you pick the Pikmin they will follow you wherever you go (even if it means their demise). The Pikmin carry parts of the space ship back to base camp so they can be re-attached, as well as objects for producing seeds and corpses of dead enemies. Pikmin will swarm enemies and hammer away at them until they die or the enemy dies. You as the captain must employ strategies to make the battle tip in the Pikmin's favor. Not only are there different types of Pikmin (see Pikmin Types below), they also have three stages of growth. Leaf, to Bud, to Flower. The more a Pikmin grows, the stronger and faster it becomes, thus becoming more useful.

Pikmin Types

Yellow: Good for carrying bombs around. Use these when explosives are needed. Also immune to electricity.

Red: The first type of Pikmin you will encounter, they are fire resistant.

Blue: These Pikmin are the only type that can survive in water.

Previously released on Famicom (Japan-only), Super Famicom (Japan-only), and Game Boy Advance, Fire Emblem leaves the 2D overhead maps of old behind to serve up 3D villages, fields, and caves, and polygonal battle sequences. The continent of Tellius is divided into humans and half-man/half-beast demi-humans. These two races have battled for centuries and only recently established an uneasy peace. Now, a new force threatens to tear apart the seven kingdoms and reignite the flames of war. Joining the Fire Emblem ranks are new units, such as such as the shape-shifting laguz who transform into beasts to attack their foes. Additionally, characters can now learn unique skills as they gain experience, giving players even more ways to customize their strategy.

Overlord

Triump Studios and Codemasters put a twist on the classical high-fantasy genre putting you in the role of the villain instead of the hero. You're the Overlord, brought to life by your underlings to command them in wreaking havoc and extending your power. The game shares many similarities to Pikmin as you control up to dozens of different minions to accomplish your goals directly from the Overlord's perspective.

Gameplay is a cross between the third-person action RPG genre, and the real-time strategy genre. At its core the game revolves around controlling the minions and making them kill enemies, remove obstacles and solve puzzles, at the same time you move the main character directly and can level him up with magic and spells. As the Overlord gains more power he can summon more and more minions, and even summon different kinds of minions that take on more specialized tasks. The Overlord also gains magic spells that can be used to aid the minions or attack enemies directly.

As the game is about reclaiming your status as the Overlord you're responsible for rebuilding and decorating your destroyed tower. Using items and rewards received by completing quests and pillaging the villages you rebuild the tower and can place special items such as statues where you want.

The developers have incorporated a moral aspect to the game as well. Actions and decisions you take are judged as being "good" or "evil" and depending on which course you go has certain consequences. Your tower and looks of the Overlord reflect the moral path chosen as the evil path makes your tower more spiky, and the Overlord have a dark and brooding appearance. Depending on which path you choose will determine which of the two endings you will receive.

An online portion has also been included in the game. There are three different modes: a direct one-on-one head to head deathmatch; a co-op mode where you and a partner take on an army of enemies; and a pillage mode where you and a friend compete over how badly you can pillage a village.

You once again control Captain Olimar, but this time you have returned to the Pikmin planet to collect trinkets for your failing company to sell back home. You won't be returning to the planet alone however, Captain Luie has come to aid your search. You can swap between C. Olimar and Louie on the fly, commanding two armies of Pikmin at once. This mechanic is also a good excuse to include multiplayer and co-op challenge missions into the game. Pikmin 2 also removes the 30 day time constraint the first game had, increasing the length of the game and relieving a little bit of stress. Pikmin 2 also adds two new types of Pikmin. Small white Pikmin are fast and poisonous when eaten, feed these little guys to your enemies. They are also immume to toxic clouds. The massive purple Pikmin are the heavy lifters of the game. Not only can they lift heavier objects, but they are stronger than the other types of Pikmin (unfortunately, they are slower as well).
