August 6, 2007 at 8:23 am

"I bought these in a kayak shop on impulse at the beginning of the summer. I put them on my feet & I thought "THESE ARE SO COOL!" Some people [my relatives] think the shoes are really ugly, but most people want to look, but are afraid to. I'm a 54-year old, somewhat stodgy male [when it comes to attire], so take that into consideration. Right after I bought them I went to Home Depot. What was cool is that I walked through the garden dept. outside and there was a puddle of water. I left bare foot prints after walking through it. It just tickled the hell out of me for some reason. These shoes are really fun to wear. The instructions say that walking in these shoes is different from other shoes & to only wear them for 2 hours a day at first. I pretty much agree with this. Your foot and leg muscles do need to adapt. I haven't tried running in them over any distance, but I think after some conditioning, you could run a ways, although on concrete there might be a problem with the shock to the heel bones after a few miles. My recommendation is to suck it up, spend the $80 on these, and ditch the summertime flip flops. You probably won't regret it."

When I took a sound engineering course, my instructor warned against earbuds vs headphones, citing hearing loss. I disregarded this, thinking this was more of the digital vs analog type of argument -- where only people with super hearing like dogs would notice. But I did notice a difference in my ability to hear certain frequencies after consistently wearing the earbuds day after day in the office. I still use the earbuds when I work out, but at a lower volume and have switched to headphones for working in the office"

gezortenplotz commented on The Beatles - LOVE

February 12, 2007 at 8:22 am

"After following George Martin's thoughts in the book 'Behind The Glass' (about the high-powered sound engineers behind the hits), I bought this CD. What this CD seems to be is a showcase of George Martin's contributions to the Beatles. The background instrumentals and sound effect mixing board sliders are pushed up & you get to hear what George Martin put into the mix all those years ago. If you're looking for the traditional 2 seconds of silence in between Beatles tracks, you won't find it on this CD; the CD is more of a stream of consciousness type of deal. Martin and his son find songs in the Beatle catalog that have drum rhythms, musical keys and instrument backings that are similar and then they morph them back and forth between the songs. When you realize that Sargeant Pepper was done only with overdubs on a 4-track tape recorder, you realize the recording genius of George Martin. I think this CD was his chance to go back into the old Beatles material and play with it again, using all modern recording tools."

gezortenplotz commented on Gibson Blues Hawk

February 1, 2007 at 1:12 pm

"Bought the blue colored model (shown in the thumbnail pic in this article) from eBay after trying my friend's Blueshawk. Coming from an acoustic guitar background, I had trouble getting comfortable playing the various electric guitars -- Strats, Les Paul's, etc. The Blueshawk just felt 'right' when I played it and after my local luthier set it up to suit me, it's been really fun to play. The neck seems to wider than most electric guitars and it's got a good balance . . .not too heavy when standing up on stage all night during a gig. I've been told it has the same electric components [pickups, etc] as BB King's Lucille, but I don't know this for sure. The 6-position tone switch combined with the two position pull-out tone knob provide a grunch of sounds; from tinny 60's sounds to bassy smooth jazz. This guitar never caught on big for Gibson, but I love it."
