Google Tips and Tricks

While Google is an awesome search engine, it can also do much more. I am starting a list of things you can do with Google that the average person doesn't know. Anybody that knows something, feel free to add it on.

Download Music

In the search bar of Google, type in Your Music Artists Name "index of", so for example you would type in something like Red Hot Chili Peppers "index of". This gives you a list of sites with folders called Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hopefully, one of these will have the song you need.

Search Sites that Don't Have Good or Any Search Bars

Lets say your at a site that doesn't search that well, such as DivX Stage6. Click on Advanced Search on the side of the search bar. In the Domain bar, make sure ONLY is selected and type in the address of the webiste you want to search, i.e. http://stage6.divx.com/. This will give you web results from only this site for whatever you search.

You can accomplish the same result without having to go to the advanced view by putting "site:stage6.divx.com" before your search term. So if you're looking for entourage on Stage6 you'd do "site:stage6.divx.com entourage" without the quotation marks of course.

Google Calculator

Google's search bar is one of the most powerful calculators available able to perform complex operations and unit conversions. All you have to do is type the formula into the search box and press "search" like normal.

Some examples:

Google Box

Certain specific searches will bring up a special section at the top of the results where you can refine what you're looking for, or get more detailed information. Music and movie results are great uses for this.
The Beatles
Spider-man 3

Don't forget the Google Cheat Sheet. It's got just about every thing (from basic to advanced) that you can do with Google. If you're a real keener, check out the Google Command Line tool.

Check out the new Google Experimental Search. There is a timeline and map view, keyboard shortcuts and contextual search. It previews some of the new search options Google will be offering.
