Guitar Controller

Guitar Hero III features a newly designed wireless guitar, with the Wiimote sliding into the controller in the Wii version. The Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 versions will feature a guitar shaped like a Gibson Les Paul, with the PS2 version coming with a Kramer Pacer styled controller. The basic inputs on the controller are the same: 5 fret buttons, and a strum bar, but some minor alterations have been made to make the start and select buttons larger. The controller also comes with stickers to customize your guitar to your personal taste.

Songs

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock features 71 playable songs, with 46 coming as "main setlist", and 25 as bonus tracks. 51 of the songs available in the game are master recordings. Guitar Hero III features the most available songs in the series, while also maintaining song download functionality. See Wikipedia's list of songs for a comprehensive look at all the tracks available in the game.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Guitar Hero III is very much the same as in Guitar Hero II, with the addition of several new game modes including online multiplayer, battle mode, and a co-op career option. The battle mode pits one player against another in which they use accumulated star power to send attacks to their opponent, trying to trip them up.

Differences between versions

While the core of the game is the same for all the different platforms, some of the versions feature subtle differences. All three new guitar models are wireless with each having their own unique implementation. The 360 Guitar uses the Xbox's built in wireless controller capabilities, while the PS3 guitar requires the use of a USB dongle. The Wii guitar makes you plug the Wiimote directly into the Guitar's body, which adds extra exclusive abilities such as rumble support, and "twang" sounds emanating directly from the Wiimote's speaker.

All versions of the game have online play where you can shred songs with another player, however the Wii version does not have support for downloadable content. In the future Activision plans to make new songs available for download, as seen with the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero 2.

Availability

Console versions were release in the United States on October 28th, 2007 with PC & Mac versions to be release on November 12th. Guitar Hero III wireless bundle retails $100, $100, and $90 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii respectively.

I've downloaded and played the demo for the Xbox 360, and it's pretty sweet. I don't think other than the new game modes (battle, and online most notably) the game is much different that GHII. It's all about the songs, after all, and it's got a pretty decent set. I'm more excited for Rock Band, and I'll get GHIII used when the price comes down in 6 months are so.

The thing that angers me about Guitar Hero, and same with Rock Band is that you can't have two people play lead guitar at different difficulty levels. You can play the same difficulty level but that's during Pro Face-Off. It's a problem because the rhythm guitar and bass sections are usually a lot more boring than the lead guitar. And often times people will be at totally different skill levels.

I like playing expert, while all my friends are on easy/medium. So they're definitely not going to play expert. And unfortunately when I play medium it is excruciatingly boring. Also all of the songs should be unlocked from the beginning when you do quickplay multiplayer. Essentially make it easier and more fun for people to play socially.

I am a big fan of Guitar Hero 2 & 3 as it is has varying skill levels to play at and has exposed my daughter to loads of great rock music that kids their age would never hear!

I am fond of the Guitar Hero series, and I look forward to playing the tracks on Guitar Hero 3. I have experienced the game on the Wii, and the guitar controller was what I wasn't expecting. The Wii controller has smaller buttons that are closer together, unlike the PS2 version where the buttons are of reasonable size and are spaced evenly. I don't have a Wii, however, so I don't need to concern myself with that issue. I do want this game, however.

I spent a good amount of time with this game tonight and made it quite far. I have "One" by Metallica and "raining blood" by Slayer. I'm a little torn, I prefer the feeling of the gameplay in GH3 as hitting the notes is more forgiving, but the charts are more complicated, but I really dislike the songs. I grew to really like the songs in GH2 and I just can't get into most of the new songs in GH3. It's good that I'm already pretty good as I just run through the game in Expert and have beaten most songs on my first try.

What's crazy is that I never beat GH2 on Expert, but I have a feeling I'll beat GH3 on Expert in the near future. Maybe I actually am better and should go back and play GH2.

Anyway, here's hoping the setlist in GH4 is better.

Personally, I think GH3 is not as good as GH2 because it doesn't have very good songs. I don't own the game, so I can't really say much else. However, because GH4 is 40% Aerosmith, I'm not expecting much more in the next installment.

I never owned the earlier versions of Guitar Hero but I have played them. GH2 was quite a bit tougher than GH3 and I agree that the songs are much better, however GH3 does have some good songs included in the soundtrack.

The soundtrack rating is actually up in the air, some are good, some are bad so my personal rating for it is somewhere in the middle.

The downloadable content is awesome with plenty of Artists and albums in different genres. You can even download Metallica's latest album Death Magnetic; yes the entire album and yes it is quite pricey. So far I've downloaded Linkin Park- No more Sorrow, The Used- Pretty Handsome Awkward and a Mastadon song which was included in the pack.

I feel that some of the bonus songs should have been included on the actual soundtrack such as Senses Fail- Can't Be Saved, Killswitch Engage- My Curse and Rise Against- Prayer of the Refugee.

Best songs in the actual GH3 soundtrack are Disturbed-Stricken, Metallica-One, Priestess- Lay Down, Slipknot-Before I Forget, and Scorpions-Rock You Like a Hurricane (If you don't like playing that last one I dunno whats wrong with you).

I do like GH3 but I'll be shooting for GH: World Tour...the big enticement there is the option to actually create your own music. Hopefully it will be as open as the developers promised. I think it would be awesome to actually create and participate in a band without having to go on tour.
