Cameron Diaz's fashion & political faux pas

This past weekend Cameron Diaz was in Peru filming a show for MTV Canada. While there, she sported a green messenger bag with a red star and slogan written in Chinese. When translated, the slogan said, "Serve the people", one of the most famous political sayings of China's communist leader Mao Zedong. Peruvians were deeply offended by this insensitive display of fashion and Cameron has since apologized.

The question I'm left wondering is, why was she wearing that bag in the first place? I doubt very much Cameron has any serious communist agenda and I'm sure it's marketed as a chic fashion accessory, but shouldn't you be a little more aware of what kind of message you're sending out? Especially when visiting a foreign country? Because if she believed in what she was saying, then sure, whatever you want, Cameron. But just because it's fashionable doesn't make it appropriate.
