Hitachi LifeStudio Desk

$200.00 Released August, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Software improves file organization by allowing image previews. Onboard LifeStudio software organizes multimedia files well, much better than default software included with many other products. Relatively easy setup, plug-and-play with PC or Mac.

The Cons:Power light is faint and can be difficult to tell if unit is on. On-board software is mandatory and takes up almost 300MB of space, cannot be deleted. Software cannot group files together by date.

The Hitachi LifeStudio Desk is the least portable option of external hard drive in the LifeStudio line. It exchanges the portability for increased size and lower price point. As it is a desk variant, it uses a full sized 7400rpm 3.5" desktop hard drive as its main storage.

Product Shot 2 The drive is built directly into a stand so that it can be placed vertically to save space. Included with the drive are LifeStudio and Hitachi Backup software. This adds software features to the drive, using the Cooliris web browser plugin as the base for 3D browsing and locating files, as well as folder scanning that creates a library of media files. The Hitachi Bakcup will automatically backup and sync select folders or an entire drive, and backups can be scheduled, constant, or restored. The user can choose to backup to the LifeStudio drive, or into the cloud, either the included 2GB space or the paid 250GB space.
