Cheating on Video Games: Right or Wrong

I have discussed this with Silence Omo 7, and silence does not like to use cheats except on StarCraft. He thinks that cheat codes make the game stupid. An example is and invincibility cheat. He did say that you good just walk through the levels without taking any damage. This is true, but I know that several people use cheat codes on video games. Everyone has their own opinions on using cheat codes on video games. I personally think it's fun because to me it just makes the game fun. Using cheat codes on video games isn't bad really, it's not as if you're actually cheating in real life, I mean a video game is a video game. I haven't used cheat codes on every game I've played. I've beaten Zelda games, Batman begins, Mario Kart DS, and several other games using cheat codes. In fact, i don't think there are any cheat codes for the zelda games (except using a gameshark or other cheating system), except for walkthroughs. Please post your opinions on using cheat codes because i'm interested in hearing what you have to say. (This is Chidori, I forgot to sign in before writing this article.)

Cheat codes are funny. They can sometimes make the game you're playing a lot more fun, or even ruin the experience entirely. If it's multiplayer then cheating is wrong all around. Singleplayer games, I enjoy using a cheat code every now and again. I do prefer beating the game without cheats on the first time through, but after that I like going through and playing my favourite levels with cheats and just messing around in the game.

I really don't like cheating on video games. Mainly because of leader-boards. It's ridiculous if you're going for a time and you're hovering at around 30 seconds (more like 2 minutes, but who's counting?) and then the top person is sitting there with less than 3 seconds. I mean, way to go, you found a shortcut or whatever, but I want to see your time for the race, not how fast you can go through a tunnel shortcut.

When competitive aspects come into play (like I mentioned in multiplayer) then any form of cheating is a big no-no. It's like steroid use in sports. However, taking a shortcut isn't cheating. If you're playing within the rules of the game, even if their flexed a little bit, then that's not cheating. Exploiting bugs is cheating though. But if you can do some crazy maneuver that puts you on some ledge or whatever purely out of skill, then you deserve to win.

I disagree with shortcuts not being cheating. Or else have a separate category for shortcuts. If you want to see how you stack up against other players, the shortcuts skew the results so much they're rendered useless.

Well that doesn't make any sense at all. If we're talking about a racing game then the shortcuts are a natural part of the track that are placed there by the designers. Just because they can have a significant impact on the times doesn't mean they're unfair. It's like really good driving is unfair because it skews the results compared to other people. I've seen this kind of thinking a lot in fighting games in regards to "cheap" tactics. Now this has nothing to do with fun, because using cheap tactics against your friends that don't know how to defend against them definitely isn't fun. Well... for more than 5 minutes anyway.

I never said cheating is that bad, Chidori. Anyway, I agree with Omar, Amanie. If you wanna take a shortcut (as long as its not a glitch were you can walk through walls or something) then that is perfectly acceptable. If you got the skillz, use em. Like Omar, I try to beat the game without cheating the first time through. And he's right, SOME cheats make the game more fun. Except in multiplayer. But I totally disagree with the use of any invincibility, infinite ammo, or any cheats that make you an impervious superbeing of the game world. I play the games for the challenge, if you can blaze through the game in 5 minutes, wats the point of spending the cash for the game in the first place. If games were meant to be that easy, we wouldn't have health bars or ammo counts. I am, however, totally fine with cheats that turn the main character into a snowman or give them giant or super tiny heads (provided this dosen't effect the gameplay).

I will admit it is fun to use cheats just to do whatever you want on a game though, like infinite money to build a giant army in Starcraft. But as I told you, I try to balance this out in the game. And i've never used a gameshark or codebook.
